Funny, i read some of the other reviews that were posted about the same time we were there - they seem quite different.
Service - 1 star (at best)
We arrived at 3pm and were immediately told that they had our Standard Room ready. Funny, because I booked a Jr. Suite. We were then told it would be an hour before the room was ready. At that point we were accosted by the bellman who told us to go to Senor Frogs for our free drink while handing us some sort of coupon.
Upon leaving, after our stay, we tried to get change in order to have singles available for tipping. The front desk told us they would not change US Dollars. We then went across the street to the shopping plaza but no stores were open to see about change. My husband went BACK to the front desk to say we'd take peso if that's all that was available. The front desk THEN informed him they wouldn't change any money. Too bad... no tips for bellmen or transfer van. Frankly, this was about the most unhelpful hotel staff I have ever run into.
At the "store" we tried to buy a couple of juices. The clerk indicated peso price then dollar price (which was more). that's weird because according to the exchange rate it should be less. "Oh, we don't give USD change so we round up". what?? i then told them i would charge it to the room and she indicated they couldn't do that either. we left without purchasing juice.
Room - 4 stars.
Well.... (and this is where things differ from other reviews) it was clean, had a clock, had a flat screen TV, had lots of towels, had a mini refrigerator, it was quiet, the king size bed was clean and comfortable, we had an in-closet safe, and plenty of drawers/closets. I think we also got lucky in that this Jr. Suite was at the end of the first floor and relatively private. The balcony area was also semi-private and provided some shade due to an adjacent 3/4 height wall. For anyone that cares, it was Room 114. Housekeeping never came to the room before 3-4pm, but that's understandable if they're trying to clean check-outs first. not a big deal. I think the power would go out for a while in the very early morning - around 4am or so. strange. it was always back on by 7am.
I was able to purchase wi-fi directly from my computer with a credit card. $16 for 24 hours. single user only. i know someone else wrote that you couldn't do that or that you had to use a card of some sort. the wi-fi didn't work at the Quiet Pool.
Amenities - 2-1/2 stars.
There are two pools and one "Hot" tub. the hot tub was not even remotely hot. or warm. i went in up to my waist and wondered when it was going to get hot. or warm. neither of the pools were heated either. There is a "social" pool in the protected courtyard area. Volleyball, music, games... they all happen here. I feel so sorry for those people who have rooms adjacent to this area. There is also a "quiet" pool located on the southern side of the hotel. this is open to the water, so it can get a little breezy. BUT it IS quiet and (according the the sign) is enforced. no screaming, yelling, splashing, etc. everyone was pretty cool about this. one thing i will say.... there's a mosaic on the floor of the pool that LOOKS like a *dead body* from the side of the pool. it's not, thank goodness. they need to make that dolphin mosaic bigger, that's for SURE!
One other item - there IS a workout room. It's in a small building right next to the quiet pool. There's just a few machines, but i only saw one person in there at any time.
Food - 0 stars.
That's right people ...ZERO stars! Luckily, after reading the reviews, we did not go with the All-Inclusive option. We had the breakfast buffet one morning. If you like hot dogs and tater-tots you're in for a treat! We tried to give the Pool Bar a go for lunch one day. Holy Mackerel! what a disaster! All we wanted were a couple of burgers and some nachos. They had the meat, but no buns. WTH? and instead of them actually *telling* people that, they just kept telling us "30 more minutes".
GO TO "TACUN"!!!
It is a few steps down the street to the left when you're exiting the hotel (which we did a lot!). there was another reviewer that recommended this small, street restaurant. i'm glad we went. we ate there three times. the food is very good and the service is excellent. Ulysses and George were very nice and very helpful with suggestions. This is not a gourmet, fine dining place; it's a local place that the locals eat at. and they had the best morning coffee...mmmmm. how can you go wrong!
Two other places we ate: Mocambo (which we had been to before - http://mocambocancun.com) a few miles up the street. Very nice. On the Fine Dining side, but not quite. The food is awesome. We also ate next door at one of the restaurants in the Royal Hotel - Maria Marie. That IS Fine Dining. They had excellent wine, gourmet food and outstanding service. We actually tried to eat at Pelicanos (in the same hotel), but they wouldn't let us because we weren't staying on the property.
when all else fails, there's an Outback, Bubba Gumps, and Margaritaville right across the street..... if you're into that chain restaurant thing.
If you feel like you're missing out on the alcohol of an All-Inclusive, just go across the street. There are several markets that sell bottles of hard alcohol, wine, mixers, juice, snacks, trinkets, etc. save the money on the AI and just buy a few bottles of tequila off the shelf.
Overall - yup, just 2 stars.
We probably wouldn't stay here again. The food issue I can live with, but the staff was just rude and unhelpful. I also wouldn't want to chance getting a bad room. From what i understand there are about 14 Jr. Suites. I wouldn't book anything less than that if there's not a big price difference. It may be a small thing, but i was really looking forward to soaking in a hot tub too. :-(
