We just returned from Cancun, where we were pleasantly surprised, after reading previous reviews, with everything about our June 16-19, 2004, stay at the Hotetur Beach Paradise. The resort is clean and attractive (recently renovated) and easily accessible to anywhere in the hotel zone or into the town because of the 24-hour public bus that picks up right by the hotel.
But it was hard for us to leave to go anywhere else because our beach was so beautiful and ongoing activities were appealing both day and night. Throughout the day, the pool/sundeck/snack bar area is the center of non-stop music and fun. Energetic activities staff involve everyone desiring to participate in programs such as pool games, competitions and exercise, and pool and beach volleyball, etc., which were as much fun to watch as to play. And the swim-up bar encourages those in the water to get acquainted with other guests. Or you could just enjoy private time in the room relaxing on your balcony with a glass of wine, a good book, and beautiful views.
In the evenings, hundreds of guests gather for theme night programs including karaoke, skits and competitions, and shows such as the costumed Mexican dance review. The open air theater rocks with laughter and applause for 2-3 hours, followed by an optional guided group trip for those desiring further night life (at a cost of $35 including travel, cover charges, and open bar at several local clubs.)
While the hotel's buffet food wasn't all wonderful, each meal produced good variety and something enjoyable (such as the fabulous guacamole, delicious coconut ice cream, fresh fruits and juices, great omelets, and opportunities to try something new and different as well. Getting a dinner reservation in the Meditteranean restaurant was a hassle, but the food and service were fine once you were seated.
We certainly felt the whole experience was one of good value and great memories for our first trip to Cancun, and we hope to return soon to the Hotetur (or whatever it will be called next year!:)
