My family stayed at Grand Oasis Cancun July 15-21st. We're from Central New York! Husband and I in our late forties, daughter and her beau, twenties and our son is twelve. We booked 2 rooms. My daughter and I literally read every single review of the resort before we left and when we returned. I'm thrilled to report that we all had a wonderful time, beautiful rooms and would definitely return! I hope this review gives others some hints and tips to make your stay at the Grand Oasis as good as ours was!
We arrived at the Grand Oasis around 1:30. Check in was smooth and easy. Because of our research, we knew we wanted to be in Playa 2, but we're first offered rooms in another building. I politely requested Playa 2 and when the receptionist returned, we were informed that one room was ready and the other would be available by 3:00. We were given a map of the resort, restaurant times and informed of the entertainment in the lobby. We got our black wristbands and were shown to our daughter's room. Room 3514 in Playa 2 is top floor, king bed, all white with sensatori lighting. Air conditioning was nice and cold, fridge was cold and well stocked. Perfect. We all changed into swimwear, stopped at the snack bar between the beach and pool. After a snack we headed to the beach. Their beach is very wide and long with wonderful, soft, white sand and a nice number of palapas and Bali beds. Various areas had either yellow or red flags in the ocean because the undertow can be quite fierce. My son and I ventured in while my husband and daughter checked back with reception for our room. He came back shortly and we went to room 3425s, another beautiful white room with two comfortable queen beds, cold but slightly older fridge, wall mounted tv, sens lighting, cold air conditioning and the same fabulous ocean front view. The only thing I would change about the Sens rooms is to add some sort of shelf system in the closet or a dresser, but we honestly didn't care. Our patio doors worked just fine as did everything else in the room. The shower was a bit tricky to learn the right mix for temperature, but no biggie. There were water problems in our entire building one day, but it was remedied by late afternoon. We were out of the room all day, so it barely affected us.
The shows in the Grand Oasis lobby we're amazing! Yes, it is hot in the lobby, but the fire show, Quetzal and the Pre-Hispanic shows were well worth it! The fire show was repeated at Ibiza beach bar a few days later. I liked it even more outside in an intimate venue. Quetzal, my favorite, was a beautiful cirque style show with Mayan birdmen and dragons. Fabulous! The VIP lounge was a nice place to cool off and get a drink after the shows. Grand Wristbands only and dress code is enforced in the VIP lounge. Premium liquors are available there and they make a great cappuccino!
Beach and pool were great! Both had quiet and lively areas. The beach on the grand side had Bali beds and plenty of palapas. There was another section of Bali beds near the quiet/family section of pool. The next section of pool has a great deck overlooking the ocean and nice cushioned wooden loungers. There is another section of Bali beds and a hammock garden near the activity pool. Yet another with uncovered round beds near the Ibiza beach bar. Our son met kids and enjoyed the more quiet pool. Hubby and I found either beds or loungers wherever we wanted to be! We enjoyed the games and fun in the activity pool. I've read complaints that the pools get warm in the afternoon, but I guess some people forget their in the tropical sun! Of course it gets warm! Then it's time for a siesta or to move down to the beach and ocean for cooler water! :) I tried many frozen drinks and got a nice buzz. We even got involved in some of the games. Animation cast was great at getting people involved and also traveled to the other sections of pool, did a dance number and moved on. They do have the entertainment theme down! I've also read complaints that the restrooms were not easy to get to. Yes, they were right there, where you needed one, no problem.
We have no complaints about the food at all. There were different fruits daily at the breakfast buffets and a great omelette station. Yep... I ate fresh, raw fruits and veggies all week and didn't get sick. None of us got sick. We mostly ate breakfast outside between Akeru and the Marketplace buffet. We also tried two other buffets. If you want to eat at a buffet in the evening, go early. They start to get busy by 7:30 and there is quite a line by 8:00. My new favorite food is ceviche and I can't believe it took me so many years to try it. My son's favorite restaurant was the Sports Bar! What can I say, he's 12, and they do make a very good burger. He also liked the Ibiza beach club. We all really enjoyed Rodizio and Dos Lunas. The show at Dos Lunas was great and service was very good as well. Food and service at Rodizio were fabulous! My husband and I loved both Cocoa and Akeru. It was great to have non-buffet options for lunch. Sushi by the activity pool was fresh and excellent, even though there was a little wait. Daughter and her bf loved Serape, but we didn't try it.
We did check out both the Up & Down Disco and Coyote Loco. Karaoke night was fun at the disco. Bartender made some crazy and very tasty shots. I love all types of music, so I was good with the dance music at Coyote Loco with the shooter girls dancing on the bar. My husband was less enthused. Just when I thought he was at his limit, the girls got down, the video screen went away and above the bar a curtain opened revealing a rock band. A really good rock band! They played everything from The Doors to U2 to a rendition of Guns & Roses November Rain that would make Slash himself proud. After the band finished, the dance music came back. I took mercy on my husband and we left!
Strolling the beach at night is one of my favorite things to do in Cancun. We always go during sea turtle nesting season and have been privileged to witness this. If you go, please, Please, PLEASE realize that they are endangered and NOT there for your amusement. If you want to photograph them, use a night vision setting, NOT a flash. Do not chase them, they need to lay their eggs. Don't touch them or get in the nest with them. My husband, son and I witnessed other people doing all of those things. My son and I actually guarded a sea turtle while she went through the entire nesting process. We fended off well over a dozen people who were trying to get too close to her. She did lay successfully, then walked toward us before returning to the sea. It was a beautiful experience.
We also used a day pass to see Oasis Palm. Food and drinks there were fantastic. I'm a beach fan and their beach didn't do it for me, so we definitely made the right choice with Grand Oasis Cancun. I did have a wonderful drink in a fresh coconut called a Coco Loco there. YUMMMMMM.
Check out went just as smooth as check in. We used Cancunway for our transfers and I would highly recommend their services! Our daughter and her bf went to the airport and we continued our vacation in Akumal at the Gran Bahia Principe Tulum. Wish we had stayed at the Grand Oasis! See my review for GBP Tulum for more about that!
All in all, we LOVED our stay at Grand Oasis Cancun and will definitely return! Next trip will be just the two of us, so we can enjoy more nightlife and party atmosphere. We found there was something for everyone, young and old and in between. Do your homework and know when NOT to book if you're not spring breakers. I'm glad we took the leap of faith and went! We stayed at the Oasis Cancun back in 2005 and it was not a good experience. Make sure if you go, you book GRAND Oasis, not just Oasis. The difference is remarkable, even though they're on the same property.
Oasis loves you? Well, we love Oasis right back!
