We travelled here April 20-28 2012 with our children aged 8 and 11. I had read the mixed reviews so was a little worried about what we'd find. Bottom line is if you aren't a high-maintenance traveller (and if you are, why are you staying in a 3-4 star resort?), you aren't going to Mexico to party it up (and if you are, why are you staying outside of the hotel zone?), and you aren't afraid to mingle with local families (and if you are ... well ... no comment), you will have a fantastic vacation.
As most of the reviewers have said, the staff are exceptional and go out of their way to ensure you are being taken care of. We had one minor incident with one of the watersports rental guys, and while we were prepared to just ignore it, the manager tracked us down on the beach, apologized, and immediately arranged to take us out on a free boat ride to make up for it.
Yes the rooms are a bit dated, but they are perfectly clean, and I noticed they were in the process of renovating many of the bathrooms. The food is fine. Not 5 star dining, but again, where do you think you are staying when you only pay around $1000 per person per week? The breakfasts were great, full buffet, lunch was decent, and dinner always had several options (carving station, plus 3 meat options including fish and a pasta option, plus all the sides, salads, etc). If you are happy to have someone else cook good food for your family for a week, you'll be delighted.
The activities are excellent. Basically it felt like a cruiseship on land. If you like having someone organize activities for you, you're covered. If you like sitting on your butt on the beach without any vendors bugging you, you're covered. The dinner shows were really well done considering they are all amateurs - the crowd always had a great time. We spent less time at the waterpark than I expected (the kids were all about the beach), but that was fine too. It was easy enough to pop over for an hour or two without having to make a day of it. (And for the reviews that say you have to cross a busy street to get there - get a grip! There is 1. very little traffic on that road and 2. a very obvious underground tunnel that takes you across the way).
We stayed in one of the main buildings in a jr suite with oceanview - it was worth the couple of extra bucks for sure, since there were many trips up and down to the beach to get something from the room. The view in the morning was fantastic as well.
I just about burst out laughing when I finally saw the dreaded "seaweed" many of the reviews refer to. Clearly people who freak out over a couple of inches of sea grass near the edge of the water (which is removed daily) have never swam in an Alberta lake! The water was fine, the seaweed required a tiny step to get over, and there is a small reef just off the beach for snorkelling which was a great discovery for the kids. I also noticed that when we left from the dock at the hotel zone that most of their beaches had the same seagrass. So not sure what the big deal is there.
We did two excursions - a day trip to Isla Mujeres with Albatross, and a day trip to Chichen Itza. The Isla Mujeres trip was fine - going on the private catamaran did not give you much time to explore the island unfortunately. We stopped for snorkelling as well and just a warning - the water was quite rough. I spent more time worrying about the kids drowning than I did enjoying the snorkelling. An older lady on our trip actually ended up needing help out of the water - it definitely wasn't a casual snorkel in calm waters (though an able bodied adult would be able to handle it just fine).
The bus trip to Chichen Itza was an absolute highlight for me. We booked through Best Day (they have a desk at the hotel) since I was less worried about getting the best deal and more about ensuring we were safe and taken care of (which we were by the way - never felt worried about our personal safety for a moment on the trip). Our tour guide was fabulous, he clearly loves his job and had a deep knowledge of Mayan culture. It made for a very long day (SeaAdventure is the "end of the line" for these tours since you are away from the hotel zone), but it was definitely worth it. A bucket list item checked off for me for sure.
So - overall, if this is a family trip and you aren't high maintenance, you'll have a fantastic time. If you are younger people out to party - that is what the hotel zone is for. You'll be bored here and the rest of us will be annoyed by you as we try and enjoy a family vacation.
As to the comments about "locals" getting to use the waterpark.... well, yeah. They live here, and the hotel needs to stay in business. I would say probably half of the hotel guests were mexican families also on vacation. I thought it was very nice not to be stuck with a bunch of idiot tourists, and our kids had a good time playing with some of the local kids at the waterpark. If you don't wish to see or mingle with Mexican people - why are you going to Mexico?
