“Not a bad stay, just not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

Just stayed with the family at the Barcelo Tucancun in Cancun, MX.

Hotel location is on the beach in the hotel area with a good mall across the street from the hotel.

Our first room was OK with a lagoon review but the AC didn't work. After a very warm night and 3 complaints we were moved to a new room. I chose an upgrade to an ocean-view room and was given a premium upgraded room (just a bigger balcony) for a regular ocean-view. Downside was we were on the second floor of the north tower and the theater was directly below us so it was noisy until 11pm every night until the nightly show ended.

The food can be explained in one word - repetitive. We got so tired of the same food that we started to eat out even though we were at an all-inclusive.

The drinks were plentiful although the service was slow, especially at the main pool as they only had 1 bartender on.

Entertainment staff were fun with lots of activities such as pool aerobics, beach volleyball, bingo etc. They were great with my kids.

Not bad for a cheap all-inclusive but I would not repeat due to the food.

Room Tip: Select a room ocean front in the north tower. Newer tower with more rooms with balconies.

Me and my friend stayed here in march and overall had a great holiday! A choice of 3 beautiful pools, 2 quieter and one more lively! All were clean and had entertainment round one during the day. Nice beach clear sea although the red flag was up the whole time, I walked in 2 foot and dropped down a steep dip went over my head, good job I can swim! Unfortunatly no hunky coastguard came to my rescue ha! The food was okay abit bland and a lot seemed reheated from the day before, would recommend booking into the a la carte restaurant in the evening, they told us at the start we could only go twice, but we ended up going nearly every night, lucky for us! Try it! The rooms were spacious and clean, we didn't get a safe because they were so expensive! We kept eour money and valuables hidden away however we were robbed roughly £60 by the maids! Worked out was about the same price as the safe for the week.. told reception they came to our room had a look round, and said they would find out who did it and keep us updated... 4 days later heard nothing we asked the same man and he was clearly not bothered that he was working with a theif! Reception staff not helpfull! Rest of the staff were great though! We were there when it was American spring break season, avoid going at this time if your more reserved it can get abit crazy! There are plenty of trips to book through the hotel some are quite pricey so take plenty of spending money. we went on a trip to tulum historical ruins which was very well priced about 20, beautiful beach defo worth a visit! Over all was a lovely hotel in a great location!

Friendly staff, good food, comforatable bedding. Beach was nice but a fair drop off or erosion had occured creating a tiering effeect.

The rooms were dated with very small bathrooms. The AC worked good however.

The price point of this resort was good, but that allowed too many spring breakers and other folks who were there soley to party....

We went in November as group of 4 adults and spent 2 weeks in the resort. Overall we like it. However the number of guests from Russia is disproportionate.
Beach – quite well maintained. However it could be cleaned more regularly. There are very strong currents so beware about it. Life guards were doing a great job taking care about guests. There were accidents in the water due to currents but it was very well managed by guys. Also it could be significant number of stones in the water depending the current. There is a sand spit in 50 meters in front of the beach. The current rounds it and there are only few weeds in the water. If you can get there you will have a lot of fun.
If you decide to walk on the coast watch your step. We observed syringes on the beach 100-200 meters from the hotel. Furthermore we spot few times people using them on the beach. Overall we had no concern about security in the hotel and surrounding area.
Watch out your towels on the beach. Hotel charges you 25USD if you lose it. Somebody had stolen ours.
Dining is good. Buffet is ok and I would recommend to use reservation restaurants We liked Mexican one. Steak was good there. One of us got poisoned in Spanish restaurant (mussels). If you tip you get better service and attention. Some guests might be loud at the breakfast overdoing tequila and beer in the morning.
We had two doubles. It is definitely worth to pay extra for sea view. If you get the room on the other side of the hotel you will face shopping mall and there will be constant noisy from ventilation/cooling system. Cleaning was ok and could be better. We left tips in the room but no improvements. Had a constant problem with the sink. You have to pay for room safe. Mini bar is included and was refilled every day. The walls between rooms are so thin that you could hear everything in the next room. Last two days we had two American teenagers partying whole nights. I had to call security few times.
WiFi – works quite well however you have to log again if you don’t use it for few minutes. The system may stuck so you need to go to reception to get new password.
We didn’t buy any tours in the hotel regardless their hard selling. We rented a car and visited few cenotes and Chichen Itza.
If you speak Spanish you will definitely get better service. The same with tipping however we haven’t always observed direct dependence.

Room Tip: Get sea view as high floor as possible.

I stayed here from 2nd to the 12th of March with my partner both early 30's so i kinda knew it was going to be spring break but i wasnt bothered!the hotel is in such a good location i loved the la isla mall we walked there every day!pool was too cold to enjoy.Breakfast/lunch was good but i didnt like evening buffet bit same old but its not 5 star so i was not going to complain we had a really nice room 1015 i think.in a tower block ground floor sea view loved it!the evening entertainment is good especially lev jackson.would say considering amount of English speaking here hardly any tv channels for us not that iv paid to go to Mexico for tv but when it rains....not much to do!i stayed with Thomas Cook - dont book any trips with them your only giving the rep a nice bonus and for what is selling tecnique was rubbish, book them in hotel foyer so much cheaper and will do deals.i would go back here.i think because its a 3.5 star i think it deserves more credit.

Made reservation in Sept.12. for deluxe ocean view room. When we arrived in Mar. 13. no deluxe ocean views available. This has happened 3 of the 4 times we have stayed there. I do like the property but I have become tired of not getting the room that I reserved months in advance. Also no internet access as they advertise. Becoming dissatisfied.

The barcelo tucancun is fine. You won't have a terrible stay, the food won't make you sick, but it was very lackluster for the price and being four star.

The rooms are outdated and worn and my room was dirty upon arriving. It was clear they had cleaned as quickly as possible and there was long brown hair all over the floors in the room and bathroom. The dresser drawers were broken and the window did not fully close.

I went with a group of six, two rooms, which we booked under the same reservation and paid all under the same card and months before arrival. We were told we could not get rooms near or next to eachother even though this had been requested when we booked, but we would be in the same tower. Well that was a lie because we had to use two separate elevators to get to our rooms from other sides of the resort. The next day when i asked to switch they told me it would cost $150 fee.

Elevators were broken all the time. They directed us to use the service elevator which was smelly and dirty.

The food was just okay. The main buffet was fine, but they don't alter the options too much day to day so this grows old. Water is like a scarce commodity and you have to flag down the staff to get some poured at your table. The one reservation restaurant is quite good and staff there was exceptional. The other buffets are just so so. I don't expect much at an all inclusive resort, but other resorts in cancun where i have stayed have had MUCH better food than this. They also claimed to have food available 24 hours but that was never once the case.

Drinks were made with very very low quality alcohol and you can only get sugary drinks or beer.

The pool areas were very nice and beautiful and the hotel is right on the beach which was well maintained and clean. There is no hot tub.

Some of the staff was very nice and others quite rude.

Overall I would recommend you stay elsewhere, you can get better value for your money.
