Like other reviews we had read, we were a bit skeptical about choosing a cheaper resort. We stayed at an Excellence resort on a previous trip, but wanted a cheaper vacation this time around, so we chose this hotel. We were pleasantly surprised! We stayed in the cheapest room in the main part of the hotel - it was not as fancy as some of the other hotels or the newer tower of this hotel, but it was still very nice and clean. We had a patio area with 2 chairs facing the pool/beach.The bed was very hard and the pillows were not very comfortable. There was only one sink and a normal (nothing fancy) bathtub/shower. The lighting in the bathroom was not very good. You had to keep the door open to get decent lighting. Our shower did break once, but they came immediately and fixed it. No big deal. There was just a normal, old TV with few channel options (not a big screen flat panel that might be at more expensive resorts). Other than that, the room was nice. Maid service was excellent. Mini fridge was restocked daily (waters, sodas, 2 cans of beer). And there was a coffee maker in the room, which is nice if you like coffee first thing in the morning. If you are looking for a fancier room with plush bedding...this is not the room for you! But for us, it was fine. Moving on to the food...we were pleasantly surprised with the food quality here! The breakfast buffet every morning was very comparable to the more expensive hotels. Lots of options, omelette station everyday, cereals, pastries, fruit (fruit cocktail was awesome, ate this everyday!), etc. We never ate at the lunch buffet so I cannot comment on that. The dinner buffet was good also - lots of options and a different "theme" every night (mexican, texmex, italian, etc). I would not choose the Cochay restaurant for breakfast - very little options, you may as well go to the buffet. Same quality of food, but more variety. We never ate at Cochay for lunch b/c they only served seafood, which my husband doesn't eat. Near the pool are 2 places to eat - the pizza station and a place to get hotdogs, wings, burgers, and nachos. I ate a burger twice and it was very good! My husband loved the hotdogs. And the bbq chicken pizza was fabulous! I made 2 trips to the pizza station that day. As for the restaurants - we weren't impressed with the oriental restaurant, food was just ok. But the italian was great! Wished we had eaten there more. We met a couple who actually made reservations there every night b/c they loved it so much. You have to stand in line at noon to make reservations at the restaurants...which was silly in my opinion. When we went for dinner, the restaurants were nearly empty, so we didn't really understand why reservations were required. We never utilized the room service - very limited menu! And the best part...was the gelato at cafe sole - get the mango and lemon - we had some everyday! As for the drinks - very good! We actually liked the margaritas better at the resort than the other restaurants off the resort. The pool bartenders are very friendly. At times, it was crowded and you had to wait awhile for your drink, but nothing too bad. Just get a few at a time! They do not wait on you on the beach or by the pool - so if you are looking to have your drinks served to you on the beach or laying in your lounge chair, this resort is not for you. There is a swim up bar at the quiet pool, which we thought was strange. The swim up bar would have been better at the activity pool. The pools were very nice and clean. And the pool water temp was great! The last time we visited Mexico was early March and the pool water was way too cold, so this was definitely much better. The ocean water was a nice temp also! The activity team at the noisy pool was a lot of fun - plenty to keep you busy and entertained throughout the day. Water aerobics daily, beach and pool volleyball, scattergories, bingo, guacomole lessons, etc. If you didn't like the noise, you had the option to go to the other, quiet pool. The beach was very nice - white soft sand and plenty of it - not much seaweed. The only complaint about the beach is there weren't enough chairs. They definitely needed more chairs and umbrellas on the beach. If you didn't get down there early to reserve your chair, you just had to lay on your towel. Or steal a chair from the pool to take down there if there were any available. We never really had a problem getting a spot by the pool. We got down there around 9 to 10 every morning and always got chairs. If you wanted one of the bali beds near the quiet pool, you had to go reserve it very early. There was a sign stating you were not allowed to put your things down on the beds and walk away to reserve them - but they did not enforce this at all. One morning, all the beds had towels on them and no one was there. The rooftop bar was very nice also - kinda windy, but nice seating and a very nice view. If you like the gym...you had to pay 8 bucks a day to go. It was a nice gym though, clean and a decent variety of equipment. They had yoga daily at 9:30. The spa was nothing fancy. If you are looking for a nice spa resort, then go somewhere else. I got an 80 minute swedish massage ($100) one day - the massage was decent but nothing special.
The clientele at this hotel varied - there were couples, groups of single guys, groups of single girls, families, teenagers, little kids - pretty much all types of people. There were party people, families with babies, and people who just wanted to relax. This resort pretty much catered to all. If you are looking for a resort without kids, then go to an adults only or stay at the quiet pool. We don't have kids ourselves, but the ones at this resort really did not bother us at all. There weren't very many kids at the pool and the ones that were there were pretty well behaved.
Our favorite thing about this hotel was the location. This hotel is located right in the hotel zone. Le blanc is right next door to one side, The Royal is on the other side. We like getting out, going to bars/restaurants and shopping. This hotel was a very short walk to 2 main areas - to the right was the Forum with shops, Hard Rock, Carlos n Charlies, Coco bongo, etc. Then the other direction was another area where Margaritaville and Bubba Gump was located. It was nice not to have to pay a cab fare everytime we wanted to go somewhere. We were told the bus was $1, but we never rode it. We did take a cab one night late b/c we didn't want to walk back late at night and it was $12. So not too bad.
So overall, we were very pleased with this resort and recommend it to anyone! But if you are looking for a more ritzy, fancy place with a nice spa, plush beds, and waitstaff at the pool/beach, then you will need to go somewhere else.
If asked if we would go again...we would probably so no, just for the fact that there are sooo many resorts to choose from and so many places to go. We don't travel that often and wouldn't want to stay at the same place twice. That's the only reason!
Go to this resort and have fun!
