“most uncomfortable bed ever”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

Stayed just one night after an incredible week in Tulum...wanted to be closer to airport for our mid-morning flight. Was looking for a smaller "boutique" like hotel...something other than the huge all-inclusive spring break mega-properties all over in Cancun. While yes, there were definitely some charming details about the property...I've never slept on a more uncomfortable bed in all my life. I truly think sleeping on the tiled floor would have been equally as comfortable as that poor excuse for a mattress/bed. This hotel could definitely stand some pretty major renovations/upgrades...definitely not worth the price.

We have a trip booked and paid for this coming February. It has disappeared off the Avalon website and all the other travel companies. We are a little concerned that we may not have a place to stay. The hotel has not returned any correspondence as of yet. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

I stayed in Cancun on the way to Playa del Carmen , and if could avoid it I would. So I tried to find smth different to those huge monstrosity hotels with no character and square box that they call standard room. And this little gem did not disappoint us at all!!!
Its got very unique style, for Cancun at least. It does look and feel like a Spanish Hacienda. Attention to details is spot on. Rooms were amazing. Think we had a cheap suit and it had HUGE living room, with microvave and tea/coffee facilities, HUGE balcony, overlooking the ocean, with the spa. Our bedroom had an ocean view too so we woke up looking at the sunrise at our feet and listening to the ocean..
It also has it's own pool with pool bar.
Staff were great and very helpful.
And the best and cheapest Mexican food you will find (after 3 weeks throughout Mexico I daresay that) will be at the little joint 30-50 meters to the right from hotel. Unpretentious little cafe, I think called Tacun. Best fish tacos you'll ever eat, for $2! It's open 7-23, and you can have beer for breakfast!. Breakfast though if not the strongest point for Mexicans in general, even their local dishes, so I'd recommend to go for normal items.

Location - def get a transport from Airport "yellow transfers", will be hard to find if first time in Cancun, especcially at night. But possible. Take R1 bus from downtown to Zona Hoteleria. Get off Flamingo Plaza, 11.5km mark. It's quite a few stops as this beach is ridiculously long. Keep on the same side , Plaza should be opposite the street, And walk back 100-200 meters. you'll walk past this cute cafe, ask them where exactly it is, it's pretty much there just hidden a bit off the main road. This trip will cost you about $2 for 2 people.

Definitely recommend it!!!!And I know I will stay there again.

The only thing with this hotel, It has a lot of stairs. And no lift. No problem with bags, as friendly staff carry it up and down for you (dont forget to tip! $1-2). But generally getting to and from your room, we were on level 4, will give you a killer gluts and calfs.

Room Tip: Ocean view! The higher the better, we had room 421 I think, and had the best view. However we saw th...

We had an amazing stay here even for one-night! Got a great deal online for the Honeymoon Suite #101 -- loved every detail of our villa-type room! Our suite came with 2 bedrooms, a large fridge, kitchen w/ stove, and a personal hot tub jucuzzi out back facing the ocean. I love the bright, bold colors here and this was a nice quiet getaway from resort living. There's a great place to eat right next door -- Tacun -- friendly staff, quick service, and great food!

No complaints about this hotel at all. Staff, service and rooms great. This is a much smaller hotel than your typical Cancun hotel and we loved it. Great views from either the front or the back of the hotel. Highly recommend it.

I stayed here in November with my girlfriend on a 10 night Holiday. I completely understanding the description of 'charming' to this hotel. It is very charming, cosy and has an authentic Mexican feel to it.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. They even went out of their way, on one occasion, to bring a ladder and some tape to cover up a small light shining from the LED on the AC unit. Thanks Guys!

The rooms were very spacious albeit very minimalistic. No Minibar/fridge. The bed was huge and comfortable. The AC made for a nice temperature in the room. The bathroom was clean.
Our room was on the 3rd floor, and this hotel doesn't have any lifts so it was a matter of climbing 3 flights of stairs everyday. this wasn't a problem for us (being in our 20s) but it may be a problem for the more elderly.

We only at breakfast at the hotel, which was very nice and very reasonably priced.
We made good use of the pool area, which was great, even the though the water was quite cold. No need to get up early to save a spot on the sun loungers as it wasn't overly busy. The pool bar was nicely packed with a wide selection of drinks, inc all the main Mexican beers (also all prices very reasonably). The pool area overlooked a beautiful picturesque scene of the beach.

The location was great. Right outside the hotel was a Mall (Flamingo Mall) which served most of our souvenir needs and was good for quick snacks and drinks. A short walk away another Mall (La Isla), which was a more modern mall holding many restaurants, a cinema, and more fashionable shops (e.g. Zara). There were plenty of restaurants within walking distance of this hotel including a very nice authentic Mexican place right next door (for the life of us we couldn't find a name for this restaurant - We'll call it Antonio's Place). The bus system was easy and convenient to use. The bus took us easily to such places as Coco Bongos, Mercado 28, Downtown (on the right) and Wet and Wild and Fred's Sea Food restaurant (very good resto). All in all - great location.

Disappointed to here it no longer had its connection to the Hotel next door (previously know as Avalon Grand) which meant we had no gym to use. This was a small thing though, as I just used the beach behind the hotel to work out on :D

This place was nothing like the typical Cancun mega-resort. It is a historic building, with all the pluses and minuses that come with that. I had a jacuzzi on my balcony, and loved the entire property and great beach. The beach was hit hard by hurricanes in the past, and the was some serious erosion going on again. This is a way of life with beachfront property. This place has held up very well considering what it must have gone through. Very sparsely occupied in November, so I often had the dining room to myself. Very nice staff.

Room Tip: I didn't have a beach view, but the charming balcony made up for it.
