My husband and I stayed here the end of Sept. and we were very pleasantly surprised after reading some of the reviews. With a little "tweaking", this hotel could become a real gem!
Pros: Staff is absolutely wonderful. The front desk staff, the concierge, the restaurant staff, the pool staff, everyone was great. They couldn't have tried harder to please us! The view from our room was muy bonita!! The hotel is so close to the beach you can hear the waves through the balcony doors. And YES, there is a beach and YES, you can play in the ocean. My husband did not go in the ocean without a boogie board (which Juan, the pool attendant, is glad to loan you) and loved the waves. They can be rough at times but we just kept on playing. The pool came right to the beach and was wonderful to relax in and look out. The safe in the room was nice to put important documents in and each day just take out what you need. Try to get a kitchenette, take the R2 bus to Walmart and stock up. Just remember you have to carry all your goodies back on the bus. We did not get the all-inclusive because we are not big drinkers, they only had 1 restaurant opened and we wanted to get out and explore the local flavor. We did eat breakfast in the restaurant because it was good and reasonably priced (about $15 for both). The hotel is within walking distance to 2 malls, restaurants and the bus line. A convenience store (Xtra) was right across the street which came in handy for water and sweets.

Cons: The room itself was about 2.5. The bed was hard. This could be fixed with a cheap investment in foam mattress toppers and it would improve the beds greatly. The sofa bed was not any better. The bedroom AC was difficult to get a correct setting. The walls are thin, so thank goodness we did not have anyone next to us, otherwise we could have heard them and them us. The bathroom is small, ladies there is very little counter space. The water pressure in the shower is sporadic and the drain doesn't drain well. Housekeeping could have been more generous with their washcloths ( we had to call twice for some).

Tips: If possible go during the fall months. There are less people, quieter and more personal attention from staff. We used Best Day for the airport transfer and we couldn't have been more pleased. They were on time, very nice and very professional. I got our tours over the internet before going just to make sure we could get a reservation. I do recommend you do that, especially for the more popular tours. (You must take the Selvatica Ziplining tour and climb the tallest Mayan pyramid at Coba). We only took about $100 dollars in pesos and that was enough. Whatever you pay with, you will get change in pesos so they add up. We paid with US dollars, pesos and credit card and that worked great for us.

The pros far out-weighed the cons. We plan on going back again next year and will stay at this hotel. BUT I am looking into taking a mattress topper with us in our checked bag!

Some friends of ours recommended the Avalon Grand, but after reading some of the reviews we headed down to Cancun with a little skepticism. To our surprise, we must say this was the best vacation ever!
We were met at the door with cocktails and sandwiches; check-in was a breeze! Highly recommend the all-inclusive deal, something to remember…you CAN order room service at ANY time which can bring you cups of beer and any food you need even if the lobby bar or pool bar are closed!
Only one restaurant was open (we did go in the off season), but that was ok…we even tried food we had never heard of and there was nothing on the menu we didn’t like! One review said they did not get provided with water…all you gotta do is ask!!! We ordered 6 bottles of water with room service every morning, which was promptly delivered. We got bottled water anytime throughout the day whether we were at the restaurant, pool side, or at the lobby bar.
Service…WOW…words can not express how well this resort takes care of their guests. Just to mention a few names…first and foremost DIEGO and ALAJANDRO at the Bella Vista Restaurant…these two guys worked evenings while we were there and were hands down the best servers we’ve ever had…even compared to back home in the states. NICHOLAS….works the lobby bar and you must get a Bloody Mary from him…it’s the best! RICARDO…took care of our bags to and from the room as well our room service, he was great! JAUN…provides the pool side entertainment, be sure you know you’re music trivia and ask him to show you his card tricks they are amazing! Water polo was fun too! EDUARDO…is shy, but does a good job running the pool bar along with his side kick ALFONZO! Next to the pool bar you will find NICHOLAS, he has great handmade necklaces and crafts that he has hand painted…he will even let you paint you’re own items, which we found kinda fun! We were fortunate to meet some of the managers and we would like to say Thank You to AUGUSTINE, FERNANDO and their staff!
We had an ocean view from our junior suite with a king size bed and kitchenette. Our rooms were large and very clean. The bathroom lighting could be improved, but just bring a makeup mirror with lights if you plan on wearing makeup in the evenings. Be prepared there are lots of stairs in this resort…however we did not see this as a hassle or a deal breaker what so ever, but take this into consideration if you have trouble with steps!
We used the main pool closest to the beach, it was great! In the off season you lose sun by 3:30 pm but that was fine, we didn’t need any more sun at that point. Plus, we would go in around 5 or so to start getting ready for dinner or outings. The pool and beach do close around 7 or 8, but we found we were allowed to swim after hours as long as you were respectful of other guests sleeping…so keep your voices down and swim to the end of the infinity pool and enjoy the sound of the waves crashing.
YES, there is a beach!!! It’s not huge…but just like every resort on the 7 they are recovering from the hurricane. There is plenty of room to lay out or walk along the beach.
One of the staff members was able to save us a lot of money on trips, mostly because we had a large group with 4 couples …so we would recommend making friends and teaming up if you are only a group of 2, it saves money! Here are a few excursions we went on that we HIGHLY recommend! Capitan Hook (Dinner & show on a pirate ship), Jungle Tour (drive your own 2 man boat to a coral reef and snorkel), CoCo Bongos (The best club in Cancun!! It’s dancing and a show….you must go!), Selvatica (Zip lines in the jungle!) and Market 28 for souvenirs (Lots of bartering but you get your better deals there…bring small bills!!)
A word to the wise, a TIP really does go a long way…however we didn’t feel like we had to …we WANTED to, because the Staff at the Avalon Grand took great care of us and because of their service and overall hospitality we WILL be returning!

A group of friends and I recently visited the Avalon Grand. For my wife and i this was our second time. Last visit was in 2002 and thought there was no way the service could compare. WE WERE WRONG. The service was second to none. The entire staff welcomed us and were a delight. We were reluctant to leave the resort because of the almost presidental service.
To begin a staff member booked alll of our activities and got us extremely discounted prices because of our group size, 8. This individual person saved us about 100 usd per person.
The second shift crew was amazing please remeber these names if you go Diego, Alajandro, Nicholas, Augustine, Eduardo, and Juan. They went out of their way to prepare a meal that was not included on the menu. Diego on his off time went to market to get the supplies and help prepare one of the best meals I have ever indured. We honestly were treated like kings. I will return. I do not know if they could ever possibly meet these new expectations but i am most definately prepared to give them the oppurtunity.

stayed for 7 nights after all the bad reviews i was a bit unsure if i had made the right choice but i am glad to say that i did make the right choice all those who have posted bad comments on here well i just dont know what would please them. stayed on all inclusive drinks from bloody marys first thing on a morning with breakfast now that is the way to start breakfast to chivas regal last thing at night and inbetween all the ice cold corona you could manage all the drinks were the top brands not the micky mouse brands and there was no surcharge for these drinks so tell me what is wrong with sitting by the pool with beautiful sea views . some say they could not get to the beach well yes there was a notice that said in bad weather that the gate to the beach would be closed for safety reasons only 5 steps down to the beautiful white sandy beach.the room was fine for us with a view of the pool and sea tv in the room with films in english air con as for the condensation well just one of the many towells on the floor is sufficent to take care of that as for the food lots and lots of choice all very good even the mexican evening was great breakfast lunch and dinner plus snaks of club sandwich and chips burgers and i know my food as for the staff they were all very very pleasant just could do enough for you and nothing was too much trouble for them as coming from yorkshire you always expect there to be a catch on the way just by the way would you like to buy this and that no sutch thing really really very nice people and no not wanting a tip every second as in new york then there is the sister hotel 2 mins walk away that you can use for drinks and eating sitting in the pool bar or just leaning on bar in the pool gazing out to sea drinking cocktails perfect then a short stroll back to the avalon for a cocktail or 2 before a shower with plenty of hot water and down for a bloody mary before dinner hope all of you that read this do go on to book this hotel as i said coming from yorkshire this was bloody good value for anybodys money

Don't waste your time or money. The beach has been washed away. The steps to the beach are poorly build and dangerous. The pool turned my hair green. They don't even supply you water to drink; except 1 bottle the first day - Come On - Water! 3 times we spoke with the neighbors about parties and noise from 1 AM till 5 AM. Dial up Internet only in Lobby and must pay then for it.
The regular maid service was good; however on her day off the replacement left big bags of trash outside our room - that was fun coming home to! Our shower was clogged up for 2 days. The hotel next door is still in rumble from the Hurricane 2 years ago.
And don't go to the island Avalon - there is a stench of odor you can't get away from, and the supposed "path" to the snorkel reef area is dangerous with rocks that slide out from under your feet. Best to sit only in the kings bathing area were its safe.
