My husband and I stayed here the end of Sept. and we were very pleasantly surprised after reading some of the reviews. With a little "tweaking", this hotel could become a real gem!
Pros: Staff is absolutely wonderful. The front desk staff, the concierge, the restaurant staff, the pool staff, everyone was great. They couldn't have tried harder to please us! The view from our room was muy bonita!! The hotel is so close to the beach you can hear the waves through the balcony doors. And YES, there is a beach and YES, you can play in the ocean. My husband did not go in the ocean without a boogie board (which Juan, the pool attendant, is glad to loan you) and loved the waves. They can be rough at times but we just kept on playing. The pool came right to the beach and was wonderful to relax in and look out. The safe in the room was nice to put important documents in and each day just take out what you need. Try to get a kitchenette, take the R2 bus to Walmart and stock up. Just remember you have to carry all your goodies back on the bus. We did not get the all-inclusive because we are not big drinkers, they only had 1 restaurant opened and we wanted to get out and explore the local flavor. We did eat breakfast in the restaurant because it was good and reasonably priced (about $15 for both). The hotel is within walking distance to 2 malls, restaurants and the bus line. A convenience store (Xtra) was right across the street which came in handy for water and sweets.
Cons: The room itself was about 2.5. The bed was hard. This could be fixed with a cheap investment in foam mattress toppers and it would improve the beds greatly. The sofa bed was not any better. The bedroom AC was difficult to get a correct setting. The walls are thin, so thank goodness we did not have anyone next to us, otherwise we could have heard them and them us. The bathroom is small, ladies there is very little counter space. The water pressure in the shower is sporadic and the drain doesn't drain well. Housekeeping could have been more generous with their washcloths ( we had to call twice for some).
Tips: If possible go during the fall months. There are less people, quieter and more personal attention from staff. We used Best Day for the airport transfer and we couldn't have been more pleased. They were on time, very nice and very professional. I got our tours over the internet before going just to make sure we could get a reservation. I do recommend you do that, especially for the more popular tours. (You must take the Selvatica Ziplining tour and climb the tallest Mayan pyramid at Coba). We only took about $100 dollars in pesos and that was enough. Whatever you pay with, you will get change in pesos so they add up. We paid with US dollars, pesos and credit card and that worked great for us.
The pros far out-weighed the cons. We plan on going back again next year and will stay at this hotel. BUT I am looking into taking a mattress topper with us in our checked bag!
