Our group of four twenty-something friends went to Cancun the first weekend in October. We decided to stay at the Le Meridien because it was a significant birthday year and we wanted to stay in a top-notch hotel. One of us also brought our 6-month old baby and nanny.
Le Meridien is located off of Kukulcan Blvd. down a horseshoe shaped street. The hotel itself is not a large, sprawling complex of buildings and pools, but rather a boutique hotel with three infinity pools, an impressive gym and spa and great service. As you check-in to the hotel the guard at the bottom of the small hill will tell the bellman you are on your way. The bellman and concierge will greet you by name, take your luggage and show you the front desk. Our check-in was fast and easy, and while we waited we were offered a moist handtowel and a refreshing mango drink. We were informed that our Laguna Suite European package included 2 25-minute massages at the spa, free wifi Internet and 20% off all food (but not drinks). I had read about the construction on the south side of the building, so I asked for a north facing view. They had already done so for us! As we got to the room, the housekeeper was turning down the beds for the night. We entered our suite, which included a large kitchenette with microwave and fridge, a dining table for four, two sofas, one which was a sofa bed, a separate full bathroom, fresh fruit and water, a king-sized en-suite bedroom, two plasma TV's and two balconies. We asked for a crib, and it was there waiting for us. The amenities in the bedroom bathroom included Hermes toiletries, a stand alone shower and a full-sized bathtub with shower. The maid left two pairs of slippers and two robes in the bedroom.
The beds were incredibly comfortable and the rooms were clean and orderly. Anything we asked for we got right away. The first night we ordered room service; we were delighted to find that tip was already included. We were not strong-armed into adding more tip as some guests have claimed. The food was hot, delicious and a good value because of the peso/dollar rate. On top of that, we had 20% off. We gave extra tip because the service was good!
The following morning we cleared out the fridge and walked to the convenience store 1/4 mile south of the hotel and picked up snacks and water. We spent all day by the pool closest to the beach. The pool staff happily laid out our towels and opened umbrellas for us by the pool while the bar staff unobtrusively asked if we wanted something to drink. In the afternoon the staff came around with a plate of fresh fruit skewers, fresh watermelon slushies and a bucket of ice for our store bought water bottles. We ordered mango margaritas, pina coladas, beer and chicken nachos by the pool. The nachos easily fed two people and the drinks were excellent!
I easily booked our complimentary massages and was very impressed with the facilities. I have had treatments done at Westin hotels and ski resorts in the States but they did not compare to the ones at Le Meridien. Although in the gym basement, the facilities were very peaceful with a calming feel. The staff greeted us by name and we were shown to our lockers. Inside were two towels, a robe and a pair of slippers. We were invited to step into the relaxation room for a bit before our massages. Of course the 25 minutes flew by but my masseuse was knowledgeable enough to tell that I had shoulder pain from a car accident and that she would specifically work on that area. After the massage we were offered hot tea and unlimited use of the spa, which included a steam room, a dry sauna, cold plunge, hot tub, relaxation room and showers. As we walked back up to our room I noticed the gym with plenty of treadmills and equipment in a well-laid out room.
The travel agent in the hotel, Hugo, booked our trip to Chichen-Itza and charged $77 per person. The nanny took a trip to Tulum for $120 and she had a mini-van all to herself along with her personal tour guide. The trip to Tulum is in reality for groups, go the price would be very low if 4+ people went. Hugo also made some calls to local restaurants for directions and to make reservations. If you book Chichen-Itza through the travel office ask if you can get on Alfonso's group. What an excellent guide! He knows all about Mayan culture, is very passionate about the subject, speaks perfect English and is very friendly!
One very exciting thing about our trip was that we were able to release baby sea turtles on the beach one evening. The concierge informed us that it was the last of the sea turtle nests that had hatched for the season and we were invited to go to the beach to watch them being released. To our suprise we were able to touch and pick up the baby turtles and actually place them on the beach! The hotel invited local school children to help release them and they provided an English translator for the guests. Hotel staff with flashlights allowed for picture opportunities (no photography was allowed).
All in all, Le Meridien is a great place to stay. Yes, there is construction of an 18-story hotel next door that blocks the sunlight from the bottom pool after about 4 pm, but the staff can recommend where on the beach you can go to get more sun. Because of circumstances beyond the hotel's control, all the beach in Cancun is very erroded and a smallish sliver is left. Hopefully a solution can be found before Cancun's beautiful beaches are gone forever. I do recommend that you check your bill thoroughly, not just here, to make sure there are no discepancies. And remember, a smile and thank you go a long way!
