This was our third trip to Cancun. On both prior visits, we stayed at the Royal Sands. We stay here because our friends own here.
What did we like about the Royal Sands?
Grounds: The beach was recently renovated. This is the main reason I like to go to Cancun. It was very nice.
Views are very beautiful. All the rooms have some sort of view of the ocean. The 1BR full kitchen unit has a large deck which is very nice.
Grocery on site: This is convenient. There is also an espresso bar.
Reasonable Breakfast Buffet: I think it was $14-15 for full brunch, including an omelette station.
Room Service and take out express restaurant: Okay food, decent wait time and no extra fee for delivery.
Laundry on site. You start your wash and you can pay to have it finished. I really like this.
Our friends. We visit this resort because our friends are owners at it. The guests are mostly timeshare owners and come the same week every year. There are usually lots of groups that have family reunions. It's a great family resort.
Resort workers...bellmen, maids, wait staff, pool bar...all worked very hard. We tip very well (30-40% or more for good service) and we tipped a lot. They did a great job.
What we didn't like:
Management: We are not owners. We were treated like unwanted guests. We could not check in at the front desk. We were taken to their sales office and told to sit at a table and someone would be with us soon. We sat for a long time until we were assisted. Our reservation in their system was under the wrong name. Their information was wrong and not updated. I had printed the confirmation before I left home and presented it to them. Mine was correct. They challenged my paperwork. It was complete nonsense. After 45 minutes we finally worked out all the kinks, gave them an upfront deposit of $500 on our credit card (due to their claim that non owners give them bad credit cards) and were finally walked to our room by our personal concierge. However, by the next morning we had been reassigned to someone else. It was the most humiliating checkin at any hotel we've ever experienced.
They are not luxurious. (We were at the JW Marriott for three days and then moved over to the Royal Sands. You can't compare the two rooms or the two resorts. The JW Marriott blew this resort/room out of the park.) The tv in the living room at the Sands was so tiny. It was an old, little guy that sat in a big tv cabinet. The bathroom has one sink. The bathtub was a bath/shower combo. The bedding was ordinary. The furniture was ordinary. The room lacked finishing touches. The only thing special about the room was it's view.
Would we stay again. I don't think so.
Overall, I think if your expectations are just average, you can enjoy yourself at The Royal Sands. We did have a great time. After we were settled in our room, all was fine. That's because we were there for us and for our friends, and I try not to let a disappointing room or poor management ruin my vacation. We looked past it. But having a great room and welcoming management is important. I spent a lot of money on this vacation and we traveled a long way. It was a striking and shocking difference from the Marriott, where we were treated like returning friends even though it was our first visit there. The JW Marriott was so much prettier, the rooms much nicer (1BR suite)...the staff so much more welcoming....that's the type of resort I like to return to. This one didn't meet my expectations.
