“Beautiful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

We went to The Royal Sands in Oct of 2012. We did not really know what to expect, but Cancun and The Royal Sands really won us over! The room was magnificent, with a deck over looking the ocean and another even bigger deck beyond that one! We could have hosted a party for 50+ people! The room was clean and perfect. We were able to help some baby turtles go into the ocean at night, and that was pretty amazing to be a part of! The little store had many great things available, and the prices weren't bad. The food in the restaurant was good, and we never had a problem finding chairs in the shade on the beach. Loved the Royal Sands and loved Cancun too!

The Royal Sands is one of a number of timeshare resorts in eg St Maarten, Curacao, and Mexico owned by Royal Resorts. The resort has two phases, each with a different style of pool. The huge numbers of staff are polite, friendly and keep the place immaculately. There are kids and adults activities hourly, including yoga, zumba, aqua fit, bingo, etc. Downtown Cancun and the rest of the hotel zone can be reached in 40 minutes using the public bus (8.5 pesos or 70 cents).

The resort recently introduced all-inclusive packages for non-members and it reamins to be seen whether this will change the ambience of a great resort.

Room Tip: Almost every room is great!

This was our first trip to Mexico. We wanted to go somewhere warm where we could unwind and thought this would be a great place to go for our 25th Anniversary. And we were Right. Initially we were a little worried that with it still being hurricane season but the weather could not have been any nicer. We did not have one day where the sun wasn't shinning. The staff at the Royal Sands was awesome, food was great, and accomodations very nice. We had a great evening waiter, Fher, that made you feel very special everytime you saw him. Always smiling, mater of fact everyone always seemed in a good mood.

We used Thomas Moore for one of our excursions to see the ruins (Chichen Itza and Ek Balam) and while it was a long day we had the best guide, Oscar, that kept us entertained and was very knowledgeable about the history of the ruins and myan culture.

We definately want to return, but will plan on a 2 week stay as one week just is not enough!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the main pool are best - you get the pool plus perfect view of the ocean. I would reco...

The hotel is immaculate, the staff are friendly and usually cannot do enough for you. We did not do the all-inclusive option. I feel the all-inclusive has taken away the excellent rating I would have given this hotel. They wanted $95us./pp. My husband & I do not eat or drink $180/per day. We enjoy going to the restaurants in Cancun that are not part of the all-inclusive. We did visit one of the all-inclusive restaurants in another of the Royal Resorts. We visited our favorite restaurant at the Royal Mayan, El Conquistador. Our meal at El Conquistador was terrible. The salad was small, the dressing didn't taste good. The shrimp were small, the sauce very salty and tasted terrible. We have gone here for the last five years and were so disappointed. The waiters and maitre'd were very nice. We will not go back there unless they go back to their previous standards. The two restaurants we went to at the Royal Sands were the Char Hut and LaVeranda. The Char Hut was ok but we waited a long time to be waited on and when the food came it was cold or soggy. LaVeranda was a great place for breakfast and lunch. The staff were great but again the menu changed because of the all-inclusive and portion sizes were less and wait times for service and meals took longer. I spoke about my concerns to our personal concierge, Kail. He took notes and I also wrote my concerns to the manager. I love this hotel and do not want the quality to go down. That is why we come every year. The view from our villa is a million dollar view. Our maid, Elyse kept it spotless. She was wonderful and greeted us warmly. The waiters on the beach were not as attentive as in the past except for one waiter on our last day at the beach, his name was Eduardo. We visited the spa everyday and used the gym and facilities and had two couples massages! I highly recommended the hot stone massage. It was fantastic and I was so relaxed afterwards!!! We had a great time at the Royal Sands and we are hoping they reconsider the all-inclusive or go back to the high standards they had before to be the best!

Room Tip: Beachfront is amazing! Waking up to look at the incredible view and quieter at night. There is a b...

This was my first stay at the Royal Sands sharing a villa with 3 girlfriends one of which is an owner. Our villa was beach front. The view was perfect as was the villa. I stayed in the two bed lock off which was opened to the suite. The double beds were comfortable, firm with soft sheets. The bedspread was the heaviest one I had even felt, too heavy to sleep under but soft medium weight blankets were in the suite to use. Three TVs all on cable with a good mix of English and Spanish stations The beach was wide and clean and multiple at night during the week they groom the sand. Lunch at th pool bar is generous with a special every day. Food can be ordered on the beach so you can continue to enjoy the sun while dining. Looking forward to another perfect stay next year.

Well this was the first year we could go on vacation for 3 weeks and we took the opportunity We found the best transportation price, $106 total, with Thomas More which included Airport to Royal Haciendas then RH to the Royal Sands and RS back to the airport.
It was also the first year we could use our lock off at the Haciendas for week 37.
Our villa was near the lobby which ended up being a good location. We purchased our usual morning items and beverages for the week knowing we would take them to the Sands the following weeks. After exploring the grounds we had lunch at the phase II pool bar/restaurant.
Food was like the Char Hut at the Sands and very good. Settled on the beach for the afternoon along with a walk on the beach to the north. The water was calm for the first 2 days but we did not take advantage of. The rest of the week it was 2 to 3 foot waves and could not use our snorkel gear or raft. While Brenda was joining the pool exercise group everyday I would walk the beach in both directions. We had dinner several times at the La-Palapa-Del-Sol and took advantage of the breakfast buffet Saturday. The food selection was pretty good but the to order waffles for Brenda and Eggs Benedict for me was a great treat before our move to the Sands.
Our special dinner was at Los Murales which reminded us of the El Conquistador from the menu to the guitar player. Most nights we ended up with our night cap at the La rotonda bar with Omar a fun and excellent bartender. We adventured out one evening to 5th avenue in Playa del Carmen and had a good dinner at the KaanKab restaurant. At 7pm that was the only restaurant that had dinners and thought that was a good sign and it was. We also booked the least expensive trip with Thomas More from 9AM to 9PM to Xcaret which include the show. We had our own snorkeling gear and rented a locker for the day for $5. We used the Xcaret map to explore the area and then returned to areas we wanted to spend more time. Warning when we snorkeled they gave us a choice of more caves or less. We took more and that was an error in judgment. The caves are caves and not lit at all so you were in darkness for most of the swim touching feet in front of you. The less caves would be the better choice. Back to the beach where we tried to snorkel but the water was to riled up and few fish. By 3PM we did all we wanted to do and decided on the dinner with the show. The show started at 7Pm so we had a lot of meandering time which was ok. The show was FANTASTIC and the dinner was not only good but well timed with the show. When the show was winding down to the grand finally we were finishing our dessert and coffee. For us from noon to the end of the show would have been plenty of time. For us the Haciendas was like a vacation where you were exploring what to do.
Weeks 38 and 39 at the Sands. When we got to our villa it really felt like we were back home. Our waiters greeted us at the Char Hut like long lost friends then our friend from Flint Michigan, Gary and Jan joined up with us to fill the rest of the evening. Sunday we did the welcome party and meet up with John and Charlotte from California. In general we had the morning to ourselves Brenda exercising and me walking the beach. Then the 3 of us couples would get together all week usually starting with bingo and proceeding to phase II pool for happy hour then casino night or Karaoke. We spent an evening at Margaritaville for a cheeseburger in paradise and the entertainment. Most of the evenings we ate at the RR restaurants. Prime Rib night at the LaVeranda, Mexican at Paco Taco's, Sidelines for their sandwiches the Char Hut and of course we had to have a pizza night. Our friend Amanda joined us in the second week, her second year with us, first last year. It was a different week, same fun at the pool bar just less people. Brenda and Amanda did the early morning Spa on Tuesday and Thursday to get back into the daily routine. We did the Diamond International trip to Playa with a stop at the Haciendas. Had a rainy day Thursday so we took Amanda to Le Isla for some shopping and eats. Got back in time for the last of happy hour and on to Casino night. This was the first time we spent a lot of time doing the casino activities and had a blast and meet new people each night.
So for three weeks we spent the majority of our time at the resorts and had a wonderful time.

Room Tip: We are in Phase II of the Sands on the third floor and close to the stair down to the pool. For us...
