“Could not ask for a better honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2010

My wife and I went to Sun Palace for our honeymoon. The service at this place is absolutely incredible. We went to the Hilton resort for an activity we booked and the difference between the staff there and the staff at the Sun Palace was night and day. Excellent service. Their friendliness and helpfulness truly made our stay a great one.

The room (junior suite) was very nice with a good view of the ocean. Some may not appreciate the lack of privacy between the "bathroom" and the rest of the room...but as honeymooners, we didn't really care all too much. Upon arrival to our room, the bellhop explained the amenities and features of the room very clearly and professionally (mini-bar, room service, "ok to clean" button, do not disturb button, using the key card to turn on the lights, etc.) and also gave us some room tips (leaving the balcony door open will cause thin watery film to develop from the ocean water and kick the AC off). I found the bed to be a little firm, but all of that is personal preference. If you like somewhat firm mattresses, then you'll sleep like a baby. There is some noise that comes in through the hallway, but it really isn't much, and as a very light sleeper it never bothered me. Also, someone came by at 10:30 AM every day to ask if we needed our mini-fridge re-stocked.

We ordered room service for breakfast every day. They give you a menu with boxes to check that you can place on your handle (anytime before 3 AM) so you don't even have to call down to order room service. Room service for breakfast was amazing, and we recommend the Mexican style omelette.

The restaurants are all very good. We really enjoyed the sushi and fried rice at the Thai Lounge. La Trotto, the upscale dining option, had a decent dinner, though the food quality really isn't THAT much different from the other options. The desserts were very good though. Most people know about how P.F. Chang's brings out their little dummy dessert shooter display and they let you pick which one(s) you want....well here they bring out the real thing and just let you eat them all. On top of all this, the Mayan Coffee was the best I've ever had. The Steak is a good semi-buffet option with plenty of main course choices. It is also a good outdoor choice. El Alamo has the best tortilla soup you will ever eat, and they had a band that went around and played music at each table. There actually really, really good. The snack bar at the pool has great nachos and cheese as well as pretty good burgers and fries.

We used part of our hotel credit towards a romantic lobster dinner. It was supposed to be on the beach, but due to the wind (we were there right after the tropical storm came through), it was held inside at El Alamo. Our server was excellent and the meal was very good.

We went to the spa using our credit as well (we could only use $300 though). The massage was nice, though at $309 (minimum amount for 2 people, $300 of our hotel credit was used) we would not have done it if we didn't have the hotel credit. Showering or changing into your swimsuit (to enjoy the large hot tub with scented candles around it) afterward had the potential to be a little awkward, as the showers are in the open, and use the smoked glass (somewhat see-thru).

We used the hotel credit to do some activities. Booking activities at the hotel is extremely easy to do, and the guest services staff are very helpful when booking. Swimming with the Dolphins at Wet 'n Wild was a great experience. It's a very nice place, so if you have a chance to go we recommend it. The Jungle Tour (the one across the street) was very fun, although the snorkeling was a little disappointing. It was our first time snorkeling, and the reef really has no color at all, and there was only one small school of fish swimming around. The speedboat part of the tour was a blast, though. We had more fun doing that than we did snorkeling.

Unfortunately, due to the wind that week, the beach was red flagged the entire time we were there, so the water was a little too rough to swim in. The beach is very nice, however, with very fine white sand. We enjoyed the pool area, but stayed away from the activities pool. The staff would come by every few minutes or so and offer to get us a drink.

The location of the Sun Palace is very convenient to the airport (about a 15 minute drive), and there is a bus stop outside the hotel with buses coming by about every 2 minutes. They cost about 7 pesos (around 50 cents US), but some will try and rip you off for more(same for taxi drivers). If you're going to Wet 'n Wild, getting a taxi is the best option, as the only bus that goes there comes about once an hour or so. You can always haggle with the taxi drivers too.

Overall the service was excellent, the food was great, the pool was relaxing, and the activities were plentiful. I recommend this for anyone seeking an adults only all-inclusive with fantastic service and amenities.

Stayed one week at this all inclusive. It was a great experience. Food was great Staff were very attentive an eager to please. The free entertainment was sometime cheesy but after an after noon of top shelf drinks who cares? An unexpected treat was seeing The sea turtles come up to.the beach to lay their eggs on the beach behind the hotel. The free tours spa treatments, and location add to making this a great vacation at a great price.

My husband and I traveled to Cancun for our honeymoon and stayed at Sun Palace from 7/2-7/9. It was fantastic...we never left the resort...we walked in the front door and found no reason to leave, until the day we headed for the airport. We had everything we needed right there to truly have a relaxing and enjoyable honeymooon.

We can't say enough about how beautiful the resort was and the service by the hotel staff was AMAZING!!! They really go above and beyond all expectations to make sure you feel pampered and special. We ate at all of the restaurants and have to say that Tratto, the Italian restaurant was our personal favorite. All of the food was great - you must try the quesadillas and the shrimp cocktail from the room service menu :) We met some great couples from all over, including a couple from Scotland - who were there to have a good time as well :) The nightly entertainment was great fun and again, you could tell how hard the staff works to ensure an incredible time is had by all guests.

Be sure and visit the spa and enjoy a game or two of pool volleyball! Also, we recommend getting the conceirge level upgrade - well worth the extra money. Our room was a lot bigger than the regular rooms, special loungers on the beach and again the extra special service.

We will definitely be going back to Sun Palace! To be honest, it's been tough getting back into the swing of things now that we're back home in Dallas!

We have both been to Cancun before and stayed elsewhere, wouldn't do that again. So if you are deciding between resorts in Cancun - look no further - Sun Palace lives up to its name and more!

My husband and I spent 4 nights at Sun Palace and utterly enjoyed it. We weren't looking for a ton of activity; we wanted to sit back and relax...that's exactly what we did. The hotel itself is simple and beautiful, the staff is very attentive and provided excellent service throughout our stay. Make sure to take money to tip, as they work their tails off to make sure you are happy.

As far as food goes, we recommend the cheese quesadillas (via room service) and our best dinner was at the Alamo; order the pepper filet au grautin.

We did the following excursions; the Jungle Tour and parasailing. The Jungle Tour was fun, but a bit overpriced. Definitely recommend parasailing and don't forget to get a massage at the hotel spa.

Overall, we were extremely satisfied and would go back in a heart beat.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2010

Wife and I just returned from a 5 night stay at the Sun in July.

First-some objective feedback on the Sun Palace:
1) There is very little beach area directly in front of hotel! (See provided images.) Two storms greatly reduced beach area. (This is the case for most of beach area along 'strip,' but Sun's area got hit hard.)
2) Natural rock out-cropping in sand prevent you from going into water directly in front of hotel. We chose to walk to cove area near the Club Med for our water time.
3) Hot water function of jacuzzi in spa area was broken during our visit. If you want the benefit, you'll be in somewhat cool water.
4) If you book the Sun, book your spa sessions before you arrive. We did and were thankful, as one day was non stop rain and EVERYONE was trying to get into the spa.
5) You can use your resort dollars at the new (and amazing) Riviera Cancun Golf Course. Only about 5-7 minutes from Sun and the course (and staff) exceeded my hopes. The Riviera Cancun GC is not well promoted by Sun staff, but bring it up. I actually stopped the shuttle driver and was able to cancel my round at Moon and set up tee time for Riviera on the spot. (Bring LOTS of balls as if you don't hit the fairway, you are in the swamp with the crocs!)

Now for some opinionated feedback:
This is not the le Blanc. While we have stayed there twice and we now know why le Blanc is #1 on trip advisor for Cancun. However, we thought it would be fun to stay at the #2 ranked in Cancun for a different experience.
1) Food-is NOT four star or anywhere close. Certainly not poor, but don't come in expecting a filet will be cooked the way you asked. Some nights shrimp were cooked well, other nights they were dry and overcooked. Breakfast and lunch buffet's were good, but very little variation in food. Restaurant's inside Sun were okay: we ate at the Italian and Mexican. We passed on the 'Steak' as it was buffet and we liked the idea of having a menu. Thai restaurant was mostly closed it is exposed outside and weather shut it down.
2) Room-we had room on 6th floor (BONUS-as only this floor has extended patio with queen size lounge couch as well as table and chairs.) Room service was good and we were pleased. Hot tub in room is bonus. Sinks are exposed and if one is using toilet room; you can hear everything. Shower was two person sized with bench (open for your own needs.)
3) Drinks-certainly were not watered down. However, don't expect top shelf labels. They weren't well quality either. I'd say right in between.
4) Staff-work their tails off. They provide the best service they can. However, can't expect them to provide something that the hotel does not give them to offer. Great folks and they truly appreciate $1 tip per drink. (We'd leave $10 for dinner, and didn't know where that amount fell in the spectrum of tipping.)
5) Pools/beach-spend time in all four. 'Social pool' was only one with swim up bar. Also had music and water activities. Others were a little more mellow, but drinks were only a waiter away. Beach area was nice from what they had to work with. Had nice couch style beach chairs and umbrella's.
6) Spa- Great service, cool stations to relax before/after massage.
7)Hotel bar & misc.-Bar was good, but was not open 24/7. Had sweet ping pong table inside for some social activity. Sun was in need of some tlc, but it's a huge building to upkeep. Had some flooding in hallways during non stop rain day.

In all, this is a very good adults only all inclusive. I hope the review reads objectively. It's just very hard to get uber excited about the Sun after staying at the le Blanc during years past.

Would I recommend the Sun to a friend, yes. I hope you just go into your experience knowing what will and will not be waiting for you.

Sun Palace June 28-July 5

Honeymoon at the Sun Palace

Airport- Arrival: 65 minutes from Plane to Sun Palace. It went very smooth through Customs and baggage claim. Our Palace arranged transport, was on time and easy.

Check In- We booked through RCI and our reservation was not on file with the Sun Palace upon arrival. Jaime the front desk manager had the issue resolved while we had lunch. We were given a room on the 6th floor for our inconvenience and having to wait. Jaime made sure we were taken care of and happy.

Room- We were on the 6th floor. This room was awesome. The balcony had a table and chairs, as well as a two-person padded lounger. It over looked the two smaller pools and the steak restaurant. The views were amazing and we could see up the “7” as well as a great ocean view. The shower and toilet issues others have mentioned were no issue at all. The two-person Jacuzzi was nice, but it takes about 20-30 minutes to fill.

Restaurants- We had dinner at the Steak, Alamo, and Tratto. We did not eat at the Oriental. All dinners were excellent. The service we received at dinner from Arturo two nights was excellent and made our trip a “pleasure”. Breakfast was buffet style in the Alamo every morning. Ricardo in the Alamo was equally as impressive in the Alamo for breakfast and lunch and took more than great care of us each day.

Pools- The pools were smaller at the Sun than the other Palace resorts, but never felt over crowded. The service around the pool was good but not as good as the restaurants when it came to friendliness and service quality.

Entertainment Staff- Benjamin, Arturo, Paula, and Nancy kept us laughing and having a great time all week. Whether it was dressing in costume at breakfast to advertise for the nightly show, or playing games at/in the pool, they made sure everyone was involved and having a good time. They made our stay even more memorable than we could have asked for. Don’t miss the couple’s night, casino night, or any of the special event parties.

Cancun- We took the bus all over town, and never felt in danger at anytime. The show at Coco Bongo was worth the money.

Other Palace Resorts-
Cancun Palace- We went there for lunch and had planned to go to the pool for the afternoon. We did not however because of all the young kids running around. This resort would be great for a young family, but not recommended for a honeymoon.
Beach Palace- Great restaurants, lots of families with teenaged kids, and the pool areas were fun and inviting. The sky deck has some spectacular views that cant be missed.

Overall- We will be going to the Sun Palace again. The service was excellent. The rooms were perfect. You are treated like royalty and the Entertainment staff keeps the fun going.
The average age of guests was about low/mid 30's the week we were there. With a few couples in their early 20's and a few in there 70's. We would highly recommend the Sun Palace to any couple for their honeymoon or for a relaxing vacation.

I stayed at The Sun Palace with my boyfriend from 8 June - 15 June and we had a fantastic time!

Check In

Check in was great. We were given a refreshing cocktail each and a carnation flower for me. It was all very quick and smooth and before we knew it we were in our room.

Our room (725) was beautiful! A huge bed and hot tub. It is just as nice as it looks in the pictures so no nasty surpises! ]

We had a gorgeous view of hte pool and beach.

I know some people have complained about the set up of the room and lack of privacy when using the toilet, this just wasn't an issue for us. If we needed to use the toilet we would just put the TV on.

The shower was another room in itself and was well stocked with Bio-Silk products.

We always sat around the activity pool as the quiet pool was a bit too quiet for us!

At the activity pool there is background music and different activities going on throughout the day. The animation team are brilliant! My boyfriend palyed water volleyball and water polo and we both joined in with the trivia questions. We also took the kayak tour through the mangroves over at the lagoon which was enjoyable.

There is a swim up bar and waitresses will regularly come round offering to get you more drinks.

El Almo - We ate breakfast (bufftet) here most mornings and it was always delicious. We also ate dinner (a la carte) here on our first night and whilst it was nice it was not our favourite evening meal.

Pool Buffet - We always ate lunch poolside - sometimes from the buffet and sometimes from the snack menu and it was always very nice. Try the grouper from the buffet or the turkey sandwich from the menu - both were favourites of mine.

Oriental Lounge - We had cocktails and appetizers here on the day we arrived and dinner on two other occasions. It was always very good although could lack a bit of atomosphere.

The Steak - We ate here twice - once poolside and once when it had been moved tothe ball room We enjoyed the food both times but we preferred the ambience when it was set outside.

Italian - our favourite! Every dish we had was amazing! Be sure to have the spinach and parmesean soup to start.

Room Service - We ordered RS three times. Once for breakfast when we had to be up early for our trip to Chichen Itza, dinner the same night when we were tired to go out and once at 4 in the morning after a night out at Coco Bongos. Dinner and the late night feast were delicious. Breakfast was just OK.

Overall the food is very, very good and much better than you would expect from an AI.

If I was going to be fussy the grounds are the one thing I would say need improving. As it is quite a small hotel there is not a lot of empty space or green areas. To improve they need to grass over the areas they do have and dot a few more trees and flowers around even if they are in pots.

As I have already said daytime entertainment was brilliant.

Evening entertainment was hit and miss. We enjoyed the fireshow but the Michael Jackson show was laughable! We drank in the lobby bar most evenings and would chat to other couples. There was nearly always a live band playing in there too.

We had an amazing holiday and would definately return. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to other couples - young or old.
