I spent a little over two years researching and deciding where we would go on our Honeymoon. Finally, after much debate, I chose Sun Palace in Cancun. We had stayed at a Palace Resort in Playa Del Carmen (Aventura Spa Palace) and were a bit disappointed so I was a little scared when we touched down at the Cancun airport. The first thing that struck me when we arrived at the resort is that it was small and NOT in the heart of the hotel zone action. The only thing across the street is a little Bodega-style convenience store and the lagoon. This was completely fine with me as I was looking for romance, relaxation and private time with my new hubby - not socializing and partying. When we checked in, we were immediately treated as royalty. We upgraded to the concierge level first thing - I seriously recommend this as it is worth every penny. Your concierge will bend over backwards for you. They will do their absolute best to accommodate your every request (no matter how bizarre). Once that was done, we requested a large balcony with a bed. Ricardo suggested three different rooms and allowed us to see all three and choose which one we preferred! Once we had our room, it was 100% pure bliss from there.
We chose to go in late October as a combination Honeymoon/Birthday celebration. My husband and I have birthdays a day apart. Let me tell you, the staff at Sun Palace never once missed an opportunity to treat us as though we were the most important people in the joint. We arrived on Saturday. Sunday, we spent the day on the beach. They have one of the nicest beaches in Cancun. Just perfect. Then we had our 25 minute back massages. Their spa facility isn't as opulent as their Aventura resort, but the services were better. My masseuse (Ramiro) gave me the best, most intuitive massage I have ever had in my life. My husband says his masseuse (Ruth) was equally excellent.
Monday was my birthday, and our beach waiter (Roger - the best!) brought me a cake on the beach with my name on it! We used our spa credits to each have hot stone pedicures which were glorious. We also had a special dinner on the beach that night. The last turtle nest of the season hatched as we were eating and the darling little critters were scurrying through the sand at our feet. They captured and released all in a group (The Palace Resorts are part of a major Sea Turtle conservation effort). It was amazing! When we returned to the room, it was completely decorated with streamers, balloons, a HAPPY BIRTHDAY sign, champagne on ice, and our jacuzzi tub was filled with fragrant bath oil and bubbles. The best birthday of my life.
Tuesday was my husband's birthday and again we spent the day at the beach, being served the most delicious Banana Monkeys and fresh guacamole in Cancun. They will bring you almost anything you request on the beach. My husband and I are totally beach people so we really preferred to spend our time there regardless of the red flag status. There are two pool areas - the quiet and the activity. Although both are stunningly beautiful infinity pools, I stayed away because in the fall, they lose the sunlight more quickly and the activity pool pumped out loud, mostly bad music for the majority of the time. After the beach we took the super cheap public bus ($1 USD each way per person) to the flea market and I haggled with them until I had a beautiful dress that I only paid $15 USD for. I wore the dress to our second special birthday dinner of the week on the terrace outside Trotto (the Italian restaurant). Once again, when we returned to the room, it was decorated - even more beautifully - for my husband's birthday. Champagne on ice, streamers, rose petals all over the bed and yet another birthday cake with my husband's name on it!
We chose to do the zip line tours on Wednesday morning as it was the shortest included excursion and left the rest of the day open. It was a blast! Anyone who gets bored with this must have a short attention span as it's only a 45 minute experience. Make sure you wear shoes that wont come off and be prepared to leave dirty, sweaty AND thrilled. We went straight back to the beach when we returned and spent the remainder of the day there, being treated like royalty.
For the remainder of the week, we simply spent our days on the beach beds, enamoured of each other and the beauty of the Caribbean lapping at our feet. Spent our nights trying the various restaurants offered and enjoying each others company. As part of the Palace Resorts, you can eat at any of the Palace restaurants in Cancun. We opted for dinner in the teppenyaki restaurant in the Cancun Palace as our only venture outside of the Sun. Better than Bennihana's, which says a lot.
TIPS: Rooms: Be ready to throw privacy out the window. All that keeps the WC separated from the rest of the room is a loosely hung frosted glass door. If you're going with someone you aren't 100% comfortable with, I suggest sending them out to the balcony while you do your business. The water in the shower takes a long time to heat up, so be patient. They give you some of the nicest toiletries they can so use them. They are wonderful. The bed is a bit hard by American standards, but I like it that way so I slept beautifully. They clean the room as many times a day as you let them - the place was always immaculate. If you get concierge level, the turn down includes an aromatherapy selection of your choice as well as a pillow menu. Luxury, I tell you.
Room Service: is great. The shrimp cocktail is pretty darn good and they really will bring you almost anything at your request - even if it's not on the room service menu. Everyday when we came in from the beach, we had shrimp cocktail and totopas with guacamole sent up. Our last morning we had room service breakfast and it was AMAZING. They give you quite the spread and set it up for you. A gorgeous, private breakfast overlooking the Caribbean.
Restaurants: The Mexican: This is where your breakfast buffet and lunch buffet are served. I visited the omelette station everyday and their fresh tangerine juice blows me away. Lunch was much the same - buffet with some ala carte items that you could request made to order. The little Mexican dishes they serve at the lunch are yum-o. My husband delighted in the sopas con pollo. This is also a dinner restaurant and the dinner is so-so. The Mayan coffee looked amazing, but I didn't indulge. We mostly ate our lunches served at the beach from the snack bar - basics like cheeseburgers, club sandwiches and chicken tacos.
The Steakhouse is always set up somewhere beautiful, but the food was lacking. I felt that the grillmaster was confused and disorganized and that led to me eating a raw steak when I asked for medium.
The Asian: Not the best food and definitely the least popular restaurant in the resort. I loved the spring rolls, however, and my husband adored the squid with bell peppers stir fry.
The Italian: Gorgeous place. Excellent food. Incredible service. It's the only restaurant that requires gentlemen to wear long pants and shirtsleeves.
In closing, I want to say, PLEASE tip these hardworking people. I know it says gratuities included, but it really does add to the stay if the staff feels appreciated. I can't say that they will be able to bend over backwards for everyone as they did for us - we were booked during Cancun's lowest occupancy of the year (approx. 30%) and that meant staff had the time to be extra doting. However, I would be surprised if anyone honestly had bad things to say about the service at any time of the year. So, BOOK THIS PLACE NOW and, unless you are a person looking for something to complain about, you will NOT be disappointed!
