We stayed here at the end of August/beginning of September. It really is a good hotel, despite some of the reviews, we actually found this place excellent. The staff were very friendly and courteous.

Book a taxi beforehand (see below) - you'll probably get ripped off by the taxis otherwise.

The beach is the best in the area - white, powdery sand, turquoise water, always calm and clear - no seaweed or rocks anywhere. You only have to walk up and down the area to see that it is far better than any of the others - always clean. My kids loved it - we had to drag them out of the sea. The staff don't hassle you and it is really quiet. As it was the end of the season/swine flu fears, the place was empty. The pool and jacuzzi were great - hardly anyone there it felt like it was ours. The kids loved it and we felt very safe.

Restaurant was good for breakfast (pricey) but to be honest there are so many places to eat that you should try the local cuisine - take the bus to the party zone area. Room service was prompt and cheap !! There is a really good supermarket across the road which is great - get your water/snacks from there. There are a couple of places to eat there for quick snacks - including Ty Coz - it was OK - very big sandwiches.

The room was good - we had an ocean view but no balcony and the window opened and 3 inches !! It was clean (always leave a couple of dollars for the maid - you'll get exceptional service !!). You have to ask for a key for the safe but other than that it was clean, spacious and perfect for the 4 of us (2 adults, 2 kids) - plenty of towels always available ! Free internet downstairs 24 hours.

Use the bus - one way to the restaurants and the other for downtown Cancun/Walmart - only costs 7.5 peso. It stops right outside the hotel (left for party zone and across the road, right for Walmart/Market 28) - really easy to use - pick the way you want to go - one way, one fare. On some nights we ate so much we walked from the party zone to the hotel - took 15 mins very safe - no problems.

WalMart is huge and very close to Market 28. Bargain like crazy at Market 28 - but to be honest you can get good deals at WalMart or the souvenir outlets - not much of a price difference. We were a bit disappointed - the place was empty and business was slow but they didn't want to reduce costs on many of the items - in fact you could get the same stuff at the souvenir outlets.

There are loads of new shopping malls opening up - but the place looked empty (like the Luxury mall).

Try the local food - especially the taco's at Taco Factory (near Hard Rock cafe) - amazing.
There are so many places to eat and there are vouchers in the hotel maps. We tried all the local food and not a problem. The people are really friendly and never felt unsafe in any area. Another great restaurant was Margarita Marijuana (no you don't get free drugs) - its just opposite the Mexican souvenir outlet near the party zone) - great food - and we got serenaded by a sombrero wearing Mexican .. very authentic !

Ignore the excursion sellers - a friendly no thanks is all that's required. To be honest we never got hassled - all you say is that you've already been and they leave you alone. Us this britsincancun.com - Allen owns it and will get you a great deal on all excursions, including round fair on airport pick up and drop off.
Chichen Itza - a must - but buy a hat and plenty of water. One tip - you'll be taken to a Mayan village/shop - try and resist buying anything. When you get to Chichen Itza there are plenty of traders which sell at a faction of the cost (need to bargain hard) and all the same stuff.
Xcaret - stay the whole day and watch the show - its a long day and kids will get tired but the show at the end is worth it. The swim is great.
WetNWild - great place and kids will be very tired at the end of the day.

Be careful at the airport on the way back - they are really strict on baggage weight (22kg max per suitcase) - we ended up having to buy an extra bag because the suitcase was over - either pay for excess baggage or buy an extra suitcase beforehand - they were really strict ! So many people got caught out.

One last thing ... eat the chillies (the hotter the better) - it really helps kill germs in your stomach !!

We stayed in this hotel for 2 weeks, last week of August and first week of September. I did not find Cancun in general to be crowded but the Presidente was not empty whatsoever. We had a room looking out towards the lagoon (not exciting) but we used to sleep so no biggy there.

We stayed in the tower on the 2nd floor (I think) which in reality is like the 5th floor. The rooms are not in their greatest shape and I think they might get remodeled in the near future. We did notice that there was construction on the side part of the hotel, the older rooms which had not been remodeled since like 1980 or something (so you can imagine how old these were!). But the rooms in the tower need a facelift too! Beds are a little on the hard side, the bathroom smells a little, and overall the rooms are a bit small.

The hotel grounds, lobby area, and the Caribeno restaurant are well kept. They are all very clean and the staff are all very attentive. We had the breakfast buffet at the Caribeno restaurant almost on a daily basis and the selection is wonderful! The staff are extremely attentive and just wonderful overall.

The pools are the only thing I would complain about. They are hot! I've never been at a place where the beach is warm and the pools are hot too?? What gives? I prefer my pools to be cool, especially in a tropical location where it would be nice to cool off.

The beach is amazing, clear, turquoise, calm, warm, excellent water beach with white sand. It is indeed paradise! I tend to like the beach with some waves, but this is excellent for my 10 and 7 year olds and they had a blast!

We did Xel-Ha, Xcaret, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, and Chichen Itza and I would highly recommend all of these places. They all have something to offer.

We are planning on going back next year again and would not hesitate to stay at the Presidente especially if we get another deal like the one we did on this last trip.

Don't hesitate booking at this hotel, the staff is simply wonderful!

The hotel is located on the best beach ever!!!! It is not far from downtown, about 10-15 min of walking. Do not pay extra money for a view as everybody gets a good view :-) The restaurant has really good breakfast - reasonable price for the food. All in all, very pleasant experience!!!!

The hotel may not be up to snuff with other Intercontinentals- rooms were a little dated and there was no safe in the room, but with that said, the beach is gorgeous. I cannot compare with the other beaches in Cancun, but this one is heaven. I went in late August, so there weren't many people, which was great- plenty of beach chairs and planty of space in the pool. The service was great. Overall I was satisfied with the quality of my stay, especially since I paid $90 a night.

My first impression of the Intercontinental Presidente was rather disappointing. It was billed as a 5 star hotel, although I did know it was an older one. The room was very small for a 5 star - I'd say it was comparable to, at best, a very nice 3 star. The view on both sides (both the bayside view and the oceanside view) was great, though - two of us stayed oceanside and four of us stayed bayside, and we all enjoyed our views.

The room is where my disappointment ends, however. The hotel bar was amazing. We ended up meeting or hanging out on the balcony jutting out from the bar on more than one night, although my friends and I usually don't enjoy hotel bars. The bartender was very helpful, very courteous, and very attentive without ever pestering us.

The water was calm and peaceful (if you want big waves, go elsewhere). The beach was immaculate and beautiful. I looked down the beach and saw that other hotels had their chairs lined up right next to each other in rows. Not at the Intercontinental Presidente - the chairs were spaced out and there was plenty of shading if you wanted it. The beach-side service was perfect - we always had someone when we needed another drink or more food, but they never pestered us when we didn't need them.

I also enjoyed the fact that we were within walking distance of the nightlife - it was very easy to walk to Coco Bongo and back, even as tired and drunk as we were at 5am.

Overall, it's a great hotel to stay at if you can get a decent deal (which we did) and want to be close to the action, but not if you enjoy staying in your room.
