What a great vacation destination! We stayed at Club Med from February 1st through February 9th, 2013. It was our first visit to Cancun and also first visit to Club Med.
The location on the beach along the waterfront on the Cancun strip is outstanding. We had one day where the waves were pretty large, but the closer you get to the reef, the smaller the waves were - many days the beaches to the north were on red flags and we still had yellow or even green flags out. We walked many times 2-3km north of our resort and the waves were too large for our 6yr/10yr old to play in - at the resort we never worried about it. When we were there the resort was never more than 70% full, and there was always space on the beach with the many seats and padded cabanas available. The service on the beach was great, always a beach boy to offer drinks and a smile. You are pretty close to the airport, so it is not quiet with all the planes passing over and nearby - but never too much bother. The pool was COLD, but the people in it enjoyed it, and they also had lots of workouts, activities and events there.
Read a lot of reviews about the lack of internet. When we arrived they were just in the process of replacing their current internet provider, and things were not quite working yet as expected. We did not opt for this service, although it is pretty amazing that Club Med doesn't include a good working free internet in this day and age!
Our 10yr old spent a lot of time in the kids club. He actually spent an afternoon in his 7-10yr old age group first, but asked to go to Car Wash afterwards and never looked back. They took him sailing, he played basketball and soccer, they played in the pool and the ocean, and enjoyed the ping-pong and billiards.
Our 6yr old didn't want to spend any time in his kids club, so he played with us, sailed with us, walked with us and helped himself to many strawberry smoothies at the bars.
The food was awesome! The buffet always had lots of choice, whether it was simply lots of bread, cheese or entrees, to the always changing desserts. The food quality was excellent, we never had any sickness issues. I loved the roasted chicken, venison in a guava sauce, many varied seafood salads and the crepes for breakfast. Lots of fresh fruits and veggies every day balances the choices. Due to the large amount of French people there, we often had foods particular to their culture, which was great. I was not a big eater of the Mexican fare, however, it was varied and well liked by my family. We ate everyday at the buffet and were never bored - we did try the steakhouse one day and it was very good, but the buffet was better. Reservations were not an issue.
Our room was near the circus area (Amatista building room 1011 and 1013) and consisted of a king bed with an attached room for the boys with a pair of single beds. Pillows and sheets were clean and very comfortable. There was TV with about 40 channels consisting of French, Spanish and English channels and lots of sports and kids channels available (when you wanted to actually sit in your room). The cleaning service was excellent, but I still wonder why they change the towels everyday when they have a system to make sure that guests have a choice to not change them. Also noted that they talked about all the recycling that they do, but when you looked at their garbage containers, everything seemed to be thrown in there. Rooms were spacious enough and the shower was excellent, although for small kids there is not a bathtub. Being on the first floor the noise from outside was sometimes an issue, and only on the second Friday did we feel the music was a little loud.
Of the guests there during our stay, I would guess that they were pretty evenly split between English, French and Spanish. For those that didn't have internet, they had a great feature at check-in of a daily 4 page Canada, US and France news service.
Drinks were plentiful and varied, although I found that I could drink a LOT of beer in one day without any effects. They served free Spanish house wine in Red or White with every meal, and at dinner you could order special bottles of wine with prices starting around $40 up to $200.
Security was fabulous - very obvious, but we never felt there was any security issues at all. Our 6yr old could go anywhere he wanted on the property and we never worried! Walking from our room to the saliling area would take 5-10 minutes, but that was not a problem.
Loved the free attractions - sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, scuba, water-skiing, circus, daily volleyball...but the kids did not take advantage of this much - they were busy nonetheless.
We found that 8 days was just about perfect - we never left the resort other than our daily walks north towards the city - so all inclusive certainly does mean that with Club Med. We met lots of other people there and the one thing that really stuck with me was the number of people that were returnees - some as many as 10 times!
I have to say that this is a perfect family vacation spot in Cancun. I am not so sure that this is a spot for big partiers (it is a long way downtown by bus/taxi), or romantic couples (with all the kids around), but they do offer dining areas for adults only and there were lots of couples.
Was pleasantly surprised at departure to have a few GO's come and say goodbye, it was a really nice touch.
Would I return - in a minute! I hope that next time my kids use a lot more of the free services and activities compared to this time.
