“Old-school charm and amazing service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2011

Stayed at the Westin for 2 weeks in May of this year. I travel a lot and know that you can always trust Starwood brands to deliver.

Location
The hotel is at the very quiet end of the strip which was exactly why we booked it. The best way to get around is by the local bus service - a one-way trip is approx $1 each and you get to see all the other hotels and restaurants as you head into town. It took about 15 mins to get to La Isla shopping mall for example and 45 mins to get to downtown Cancun. The bus was perfectly safe and we travelled on it late into the night with no trouble at all.

Room
We were upgraded to the Royal Beach Club which is a separate wing of the hotel with its own bar/restaurant and pool area. The room was huge and had a perfect view out onto the ocean. Our room also had a large balcony which was ideal for relaxing or reading after a day at the pool.

Dining
The hotel has several restaurants but the only one we tried was Sea and Stones which was fantastic. You get to cook your own food on a hot stone grill and the whole experience was great fun not to mention delicious. Other restaurants I would recommend in the area would be Thai, Katsu-ya and Freds.

Facilities
The hotel has an excellent spa and
fitness area. We visited the gym every day and it was very wel equipped and always immaculate. There are several pools - one with swim-up bar - which were welll maintained and a welcome relief from the sun.

Service
The service at the hotel was without doubt exceptional. Staff called you by name after a few days which was a nice touch and nothing seemed like too much trouble. My sister celebrated her birthday at the hotel and was presented with a beautiful chocolate cake after dinner. There are so many staff I would like to thank but will leave it to Diego Chavez to do the thanking again on my behalf. He and his team are an asset to the Starwood brand.

Summary
The Westin Cancun is certainly one of the older properties but has been maintained well and is beautifully landscaped. We visited the other Westin and although it's brand new and well located I came away thinking I'd choose this property over it. There is a charm about the Westin that is missing from the newer property.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with Ocean View and upgrade to RBC

I recommend this hotel strongly - even it is located a bit away from the agitation of the central area of Cancun, it was very confortable and peaceful - they also have upgraded us to a more sofisticated section of the hotel due to our gold membership with Westin - the beach and the swiming pool were fantastic !

Room Tip: I always avoid rooms near to the elevators/ice

Almost everybody was super nice! especially the people at the Restaurant, I would like to recognize Jesus, Yasmin and Pato. They worked really hard and always with a smile in their face, they made us feel welcome. The Spa had a special promotion for the low season, and they were offering two treatment for the price of one, Lupita gave me an exfoliation and a massage that I will never forget. Unfortunately I did not feel the same with the people at the Front Desk, they can not provide change if you don't have your passport and flying information with you, and they did not inform me this at the moment of the check in, I didn't receive information about the restaurants location, pool, etc. either. They check in was really poor. The Hotel was less than % 50 occupancy and we got the last room of the hall. The internet was not complementary and the connection in the business center was really bad.

We only stayed a night as I had some SPG points to use and we were adding a day to our trip, but it was a nice hotel. The staff was great and we enjoyed our brief stay. The rooms could use some color, but the Westin Heavenly Beds more than make up for it. We did a timeshare tour at its sister property, the Lagunamar, and almost bought-in. It;s a beautiful property, as well, with an infinity pool. Both properties sit right on the beautiful crystal clear water with ample soft, white sand. Oh, the highlight of our brief stay at the Westin Cancun was dining at Sea and Stones at the hotel. We cooked our our meal on a hot lava stone and it was delicious!

My friend had already booked a long weekend (5 nights actually) at this Westin in Cancun--the sort of generic-sounding place that ordinarily would not appeal to me, but it was a long winter, and I knew the swimming would be good, so I went with her. She had been before, so we got a superb deal at the beach club next door to the main building. The beach is great for for swimming and well-appointed with upholstered lounge chairs and plenty of tables. The service is great. The breakfasts were free for us and right downstairs, very open lovely room--great breakfasts--sumptuous. They also offer free cocktail "snacks" from 5 to 8, which were as good as a meal, and delicious. My favorite part of the trip, outside of Tulum and the beach of course, was our room, which was very big and really quite beautiful--slate and stone with a large veranda right on the ocean. The price was fantastic. This is a great place to stay, a very good deal, if what you're looking for is serious R&R.

Room Tip: Most rooms are on the ocean

We stayed at the Westin Resort and Spa Cancun for our honeymoon! The staff was very helpful, and they went over and above our expectations to meet our needs. On several occasions, we were able to get very helpful advice from the concierge on dinner choices and information about traveling around in Cancun. He was very friendly, and recognized us every time we went through the lobby after our first visit. The facility was very clean and well kept, paying close attention to detail. We even watched the cleaning crew wiping off every leaf of the fake plants. The ladies who cleaned our room were very friendly and made returning to our room a joy. If we had left things out of place, they would organize things for us. For example, they would put my wife's shoes in order if they were strewn about, they made a spot for my toothbrush and toothpaste, and organized our shower stuff every day. We also frequently changed money at the main desk. They were always friendly, and gave excellent exchange rates.

We also tried all four of the main restaurants. All of them had excellent service. Though we had an outstanding experience at all of them, we had the most fun at Sea and Stones. At this restaurant, they bring out raw meat and a cooking stone, for you to cook the food yourself! It was fun to play with your food at a nice restaurant. And even though the service was outstanding at all the restaurants, our best service by far was found at Arrecifes. Our waiter on both occasions that we went there was Alejandro. He was a fantastic waiter, and took very good care of us. The second time we went to see him, he greeted us as his friends and when we left, he was hoping we would be back after he was off the next day. Sadly, we were on our way out the morning he would be back, and he was genuinely disheartened, and said goodbye to us.

I could tell you many more stories about how the Westin made us feel like royalty, but I will let you find out for yourself. Don't pay attention to the complaints. The only trouble we had was when we got locked out of our safe, but they promptly fixed the problem. And when we returned to our room after dinner, they had brought in a plate of fancy hors d'oeuvres and a bottle of wine to make up for it. The only difficulty we had, which neither of us were upset about, was more than made up for by the staff. I highly recommend it to anyone considering going to Cancun.

We loved our stay at the Westin! Everyone was so helpful and nice to us during our 6 days there. We loved our ocean front view and watched the cruise ships in the evenings go by. The Royal Beach Club was well worth the money. The staff at breakfast and in the evening cocktail hour was so nice to us! They are very caring people. The room was cleaned very well every day and the room was very quiet while we were there. The front desk was there to answer all of our needs. We stayed at the Westin when we went to the Caymans last year and thats why we chose the Westin in Cancun,,, I would go back to the Westin in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Royal Beach Club a Must!
