We just returned from a four night stay (Aug 9-13). My wife and I, along with another couple, had a great stay here.
Rooms--We stayed in an ocean view room on the sixth floor (a renovated room that they gave us upon request at the front desk). They room was clean, modern and had a great ocean view with a nice private balcony. The other couple we traveled with booked an ocean front room. Their room was just one floor above us, and with the exception of a larger balcony, the rooms were identical with the exact same view. I would suggest staying in a renovated ocean view room (if available--it saves a few bucks). I also suspect there are a lot less renovated ocean view rooms, so if the hotel is near full capacity, you may not get a renovated room. Neither couple booked a club room, so I can't comment on that. The room was cleaned, well I might add, twice daily. They always made sure to resupply all items.
Hotel--The outside of the hotel is not spectacular, but once you enter that changes. The front desk staff are friendly and helpful. With the exception of some minor wear on the carpets, the facility is well decorated, clean and everything you would expect from a five star hotel. The gym is top notch and they spoil you with frozen mint-scented towels to cool off with. Everyone is friendly and goes out of their way to say hello. I would also like to recognize Bianca, who went above and beyond to provide us with exceptional service at the main bar.
Pool/Beach--The pool and beach are clean and well staffed. We stayed when capacity was about 60%, so there was never the issue of not having a pool chair. Drink and food srvice was great at pool side. They would come around once or twice a day to offer complementary Popsicles (nice touch). Our only suggestion would be some type of entertainment (maybe an acoustical band at poolside in late afternoon--this also would have been nice at the main bar too as they only had live entertainment one night we were there).
Food--At poolside we enjoyed fish tacos, nachos, and pizza...all excellent. We did eat at Casitas. The service at Casitas seemed to be not up to the usual Ritz standard. Also you sit in the same furniture that is used during the day (pool chairs). This was a bit of a disappointment...as well as the guy who was eating next to us with no shirt on! Just a little advice for people, if you are not at the beach or pool, put your damn shirt on. The food was good, but not great. Their signature restaurant is Fantino, you might want to try this instead.
Overall--You get what you pay for, and if felt like I got that at the Ritz Cancun. They might need to get with the times and have free WiFi in all rooms, but I knew this going into my trip and planned accordingly. It is a more laid back and quite property for those looking for some R&R. If you want to stay somewhere with a lot to do, this is not a resort for you. If you want to relax, get great service, and want to be treated special, there are not many resorts that do it better than Ritz Cancun.
