Well is has been about 8 years since I was in Cancun. in short, beach was lovely, apart from being pestered by jewelry salespeople, crafts people, which was every 10 minutes. Excursions to the ruins and snorkeling off Ilsa Majares are good but costly, US dollars. Hotel was Barcelo Imperial Las Perlas, the armpit of Cancun. Cost 1300 Canadian dollars per week. Pool was too cold to swim in, food was OK, didn't eat there much. View from balcony was a lovely view of Walmart and McDonalds. Easy access to taxis and bus. Downtown Cancun was much to be desired, a Mall, Hard Rock Cafe, Senior Frogs and various other bars....good if you are 25 and only looking to party. If you are looking for a family vacation or a relaxing vacation but still want excursions to the highlight touristy things then head to the Mayan which is more remote, away from the concrete jungle. But beware, even of these excursions there are planned stops at local markets where you are constantly pestered to buy their wares. Purchased telephone cards did not work. Big rip off, and these were recommended by the tour operator and the rep at the hotel. These days cell phones are more common.
Not to drag this on more, I would like to say that I am very tired of receiving trip advisor notifications via email about "Cancun Deals". This occurs almost weekly. Are there not any other/better destinations that this site can promote? I have since traveled to many other destinations and countries. Other people must surely feel the same. Sorry for the rant but when you click on this site's "contact us" option, it leads you to not contact them at all but to write a review so here it be!
