“Challenging, but fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2013

We wanted to stay fairly close to our Hyatt Hotel, so we picked the Cancun Golf Club for our 2 outings. The staff are really friendly and were very helpful online for pre-booking the tee times. Cost is pretty expensive, but one can get a 2 for 1 rate on Fridays. The layout has a lot of ocean views and even Mayan ruins off to the side of one hole. We found the St Augustine fairways to be a bit challenging to hit off of, but got use to it - especially after the course dried out from our first round. Be aware if the wind is blowing all the holes seem to play into it. All in all, a nice day of golf.

“Poor condition”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

Great view, decent price, friendly staff. The course is not maintained. Weeds on fairways, sand traps. Horrible drainage on fairways and greens. Numerous puddles with moldy and smelly water. Areas on fairway where mold has turned into fungus. I was really disappointed with course condition.

“Ask first about the red ants!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

We tried to play this course during our visit two weeks ago to Mexico. I read the reviews ahead of time so we were prepared for a course with nice views but somewhat below average conditions. The price was right - we took advantage of a Friday 2-for-1 special for a party of four (two adults and two teens). It rained in the morning but had stopped in time for our 10 AM tee time. We hit our first drive off the first tee and went to retrieve our balls. My son was immediately attacked by countless red ants just off the fairway and badly bitten on his legs and feet. After 10 minutes of wiping etc we decided to play another hole. I thought he had just had bad luck and stepped on a nest. Wrong! We teed off on the second hole and went to our balls. As we got out of the cart we checked the ground and it was clear. No more than 10 seconds or so and we were once again swarmed with red ants, all over our feet and legs. On the cart path, not anywhere near a possible nest. We immediately went back to the clubhouse and said we could not continue. I felt sorry for the starter - he seemed genuinely embarrassed. He mentioned that the rain could bring out the ants and that the groundskeeper tries to control them. Yikes! Everyone was very nice. They gave us a total refund before I even asked, and that included the transportation van that they supplied. They also drove us back for free. I think they knew about the conditions and were waiting to see if we could make it though. By the way, the conditions on the first and second holes, which were all we saw, were pretty brutal. Bottom line - play this course at your peril. Or at least ask about the red ants before you try it. Luckily neither I nor my son is allergic, or else it should have been a real tragedy. His legs were covered it bites and, if you have never been stung by red ants, it hurts like heck.

“Beautiful Views, Course Needs Work Though”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

We had a foursome play at this course and got in on a twilight rate. A person from the golf course picked us up from our resort lobby (Riu Palace Las Americas) at 1 pm for a 2 pm tee time. Our rate of $140 included transportation to/from course, beer, mixed drinks, food - hotdogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, fries, chips, etc., practice balls, clubs and carts. When we got done golfing at 7 pm, it appeared that everything was closed up, we could only find one person who we returned our clubs too that had no authority of getting us back to our resort. So we had to taxi it back, that was kind of disappointing. The course needs work, there were weeds growing out the sand bunkers, etc. but the views were amazing. Overall it was priced right for the money and I'm glad we golfed here.
