I stayed at the Grand Royal Solaris in September of 2008. My wife and I have been to Cancun every September since 2003. We have always done Apple Vacations as it has always been hassle free. Our trip to the Grand Royal Solaris was an Apple 5 Square deal, due to our travel partners limited budget.
When we arrived we were greeted with a "special drink" and cold towel. We were informed that our room was not ready. We were then approached by a manager who offered to go over the in's and outs of the property with us. After going over the property he then tried to entice us into a timeshare pitch, with offers of a free booze cruise, for attending. We politley declined, and went to search for something to eat as our room was not ready. We ate a quick lunch and then returned to the front desk, and obtained our rooms.
ROOMS: It seems that the ocean view rooms are reserved for time share members, or those willing to pay a HUGE FEE to upgrade. The room view is no biggie to me, so I declined the upgrade. When we got to our room, it was on the 3rd floor right beside the elevator. Very noisy, but not that big of a deal to me. The rooms are clean and small, and the staff did an excellent job of cleaning them, and restocking the mini fridge every day. We had different towel art on the bed every day. The maid staff work very hard, and were excellent.
FOOD: We found the food to be average to above average for an all inclusive.
POOL AND BEACH: THe beach was red flagged every day we were there, and after speaking with several "club" members, found this to be the case a great portion of the time, due to the hotels location. The beach was also eroded very badly.
The pools were a little on the chilly side. My main complaint about the pool is the bottom of it. It has a rough sand stone bottom, that actually hurts your feet, and is uncomfortable to walk on. Picture walking barefoot on numerous small pebbles. I like to particpate in pool volleyball, and water polo. After taking part in two such events, I left the pool with bleeding feet due to the rough bottom. Whoever designed this pool needs their head examined.
THE ENTERTAINMENT: The entertainment team does a good job with activities around the pool during the day. The nightly entertainment is on par with the other All inclusives we have stayed at in Cancun.
Some other concerns. This is a wrist band resort. You will see people with different colored wrist bands, and they are treated according to color. They cahnge monthly but when we were there yellow was the "allinclusive" folks. Red was for folks who payed for an upgrade. On your all inclusive you do not get top shelf alcohol, but you can pay to upgrade to this, plus a few other perks. Blue was for the time share people who enjoyed ALL upgrades available. I don't have a problem with the time share people getting better treatment, as I am sure they paid the resort a great deal more money than I did. I just do not like the time share resorts. Especially when our Apple Vacation paperwork advised to avoid the timeshare people at all costs, ony to send us to a resort that pressures you to attend a time share meeting. Our room phone rang every morning asking us to attend the meeting.
All in all it is not a bad resort, but we have stayed at better in Cancun for the same money. No more square deals. In all fairness when we let our complaints known to our travel agent, she notified Apple who provided us with $100.00 coupon towards our next vacation.
