“Beautiful property, great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2012

This was our first time visiting Cancun. We had a very nice stay.
Location : very well located, right across to La Isla mall, an open air mall by the lagoon. You will have access to nice shops and restaurants. Walking distance to a lot of other nice resturant.
Staffs : The staffs were very helpful and friendly. They recognized us by our lastname. Our personal concierge Luigi sent us a welcome email, arrange transportation from the airport to the hotel, gave a very good recommendation on the restaurants. I can tell that he is also a foodie. The frontdesk staffs were also very nice as well. Adrianna went above and beyond tried to accomodate our requests. We didn't have any bad experience with the staffs.
Room : We got 2 bedroom villa. All the villas got ocean view or partial pool/ocean view. You will get blocked by palm trees if you are on the lower floor. The villa was very specious, one bed room got fully equipped kitchen, studio got kitchenette, modern decor, flat screen TV.
Food : The food was not bad. The room service menu was ok, very basic. The lunch menu of the restaurant by the pool was not bad, but the dinner needs some improvement.
Pool : They got the biggest infinity pool I've ever seen. I think the towel card thing was kind of odd but I got used to it. I am guessing they loose their towels a lot. A lot of people got up super early to reserve louge chairs. I didn't think that was fair to other people and the hotel staffs were too nice to say anything. You know who you are, you should be ashame of yourself.
I enjoyed my stay and will definitely go back here again.
By the way, you will get special treatments from the restaurants when the hotel concierge make reservation for you.

This is our second trip to the Westin Lagunamar. We returned for 10 days in a one bedroom at the end of April to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

When you book your trip, if you are concerned about the view/room, speak to Erick Sanchez. He is the 'room controller'. He got us the most incredible view on a high floor, and then offered us another right on the beach which was just as awesome. We took the beachfront corner unit, it was absolutely wonderful to sit out in the morning and watch the sun rise.

Also, when you check in, if you want more than one pool towel per person, just ask. They are very friendly and accomodating and will give you as many pool towel cards as you wish, just remember you are responsible for returning these at check out or you will be charged.

During our stay, we had no issues with pool or beach chairs even at mid-morning. We prefer shade and the beach, and had no problems getting a palapa on the beach, but we also were there when it was not super full. Wish they had cushions for the beach chairs, it can get a bit uncomfortable after a while.

The hotel has filtered water so you can consume the ice and water from the tap with no problem. They use a reverse-osmosis system and add minerals to improve the taste, you can't get better water than that. We filled up a pitcher of water and kept it in the fridge, it tasted fine.

Breakfast buffet is wonderful, great assortment of foods, fruits, even super foods rx items if you are into that. Omelet station - they will make fresh omelets, huevos rancheros, fried eggs, whatever you ask they will do their best to make you happy! You also get all the champagne/mimosas/bloody mary's that you want to drink! Waiters are awesome and I wish I could remember everyone's names - they are so friendly and wait on you hand and foot.

Ate at Oceano a few times, the food was very good. If you order the steak, the fillet mignon is the best. Alberto is a top notch waiter! We always sought his table.

Massages on the beach with Rafaela and Manuel - heavenly! Had two of those!

Had a couple of issues with housekeeping but our concierge Delfina got the manager to speak to us and they were promptly resolved. Delfina is a great concierge, by the way!
We already own two properties through Starwood, and although they wanted us to go to the presentation, we did not as our time was too precious at this beautiful place. However, no pushiness for us to do so.

Agree with others there is no need for a rental car.. although we have gone to the Isla Mall, we didn't see the prices in the mini-mart on property to be too excessive. However, we ate out at the hotel most of the time.

We took Cancun Valet, which is a private transfer service. You can rent a cell phone from them, which they will give you the number ahead of time to give to family/friends plus will program your numbers into the phone for fast dialing to the U.S. It cost us about $50 for 10 days and we had a set number of minutes per day, and this worked great for us as T-Mobile, our carrier, is quite expensive there.

All in all, a wonderful stay, beautiful property, the most incredible staff - they will do anything to please!

We plan to return next spring with our grown children.

Room Tip: Speak to Erick Sanchez and let him know what you are looking for! 3rd floor and higher is best, as w...

We are just back from 12 nights at the Westin Lagunamar. I can't praise the place enough. We stayed in a one bedroom time share in building 4 (5th floor) and it was incredible! We had the chance to move to no. 9, sixth floor, ocean front, but were happy with the view from no. 4. We even visited some of the nearby properties -- Live Aqua included -- and the Westin is far superior, much bigger, superior pools and even smells better! The White Tea fragrance in the lobby beats the overpowering mint odor from Live Aqua! Our concierge Alicia was very very helpful and great to spend time with. We had a car for four days and took a day trip to the pretty colonial city of Valladolid, 2 hours away. The other trip we took was to Cozumel to snorkel. I highly recommend a trip to Cozumel!! The little town and the beaches there are something to see. Another day trip I recommend is to Isla Mujeres. Take the ferry from Playa Tortuga and rent a golf cart to putter around the entire island, stopping off to snorkel, swim or wander through the small town. We actually drove around the island two times. The ocean side offers views comparable to Greece!!

A few minor quibbles with the resort:
1. We were shocked to go change dollars to pesos one day and learn there were no pesos! Another day we were only allowed to change a small amount. Very odd for a hotel of this quality.
2. Happy hour at the bars. The menus state one time for happy hour and the actual time is different. Not a big deal. The alcohol content of the beverages declines dramatically during happy hour. Not worth it. We brought our own beers and drinks to the pool and the ocean loungers.
3. The infamous chair horders with towels. One security man told me at about 8 am one morning that at 9;30 a.m. if someone wasn't at a lounger who had claimed it earlier that their towel and belongings would be taken to lost and found. Nice policy. He even had a printed card stating this policy. But it was never enforced. I guess words are stronger than actions? Hmmmm.
4. The staff probably should clean the time shares more than once a week. Twice would have been better.

Other things to note
If you need to buy groceries, go to Superama (little better than Walmart) and pay a taxi to take you. He'll stay there for one hour for a total of $30. Avoid the hotel store if you can.

We witnessed the life guards on the beach save three men one day (yes, save their lives) who had wandered too far to the right of the property (facing the ocean). At that spot, the undertow is terribly dangerous, life threatening even. I watched the men, barely 20-30 yards from shore, frantically trying to swim directly back to the beach, perpendicular to the shore. One lifeguard and then two more went out with their boards to tow them to safety. The lifeguards are very good, but be sure to obey them when you hear their whistles.

There were a few naval vessels roaming the waters nearby the resorts on most days. This is to show a presence so the cartels don't off-load drugs. Also, there was a major military meeting in Cancun some of the days we were there. The city is very safe. But use common sense.

Market 28 (Mercado veinte ocho). Well worth going to this place by bus. Take the no. 2 and ask the bus driver to tell where to get off. Once off the bus, you need to walk 2 blocks. Be sure you don't visit Plaza 28, which is not the same place. You will walk past it. At 28 you can get Mexican hand crafts at bargain prices. We bought 10 handmade "bolsas" (small pocket book type thing with a long strap) for $3 each. They sell for $15 at the other Mexican stores in the Mall and elsewhere.

Family photos. Use the Photoshop to schedule a family photo. You get one free. They take great photos.

Restaurants
La Europa, a liquor store 5 minutes away. They have a pretty balcony in back where you can order a bottle or wine (or pick out your own) and quite delicious cheeses and meats. Try the baguette. Very reasonable.

Fritanga Fish. Very casual but worth it.

Sisal Mexican Grill. Pretty Mexican building a 20 min. walk from hotel. I highly recommend their Sunday buffet starting at 9 am. Mimosas included!

Habicuela Sunset. Not worth it.

In sum, we'd go back to this resort in a minute.

Room Tip: Anything above the 3rd floor gives a great view.

We just returned from our two week stay at the beautiful Westin Lagunamar.  WOW what an amazing trip!!!  Yes the Westin is a BEAUTIFUL resort but that is only a small part of a great vacation.  The true differentiator for us was the friendly staff and great service provided.  I have never been so impressed and as a timeshare owner I travel often to amazing top rated resorts so take my word...this is one of the best.  Everyone was great from the doormen that greeted us when we arrived to the front desk representative that worked her magic to get our room moved to the 7th floor to the towel guys/gals that greeted us in spanish and english each morning to the life guard Jon that watched for us every morning so he could offer to drag our beach chair down to the ocean to the waiters/waitresses that went out of their way to bring us a special dessert for our 10 year anniversary to the maid service and maintenance man that responded within minutes when we had issues with our shower (you get the point everyone was great!!!). The other wow factors were THE VIEWS, THE BEACH(breathtaking) THE Location (bus stop out front less than $1, shopping across the street and close to great food) Amenities (miniature golf, kids center, adult and kid games, daily activities, waterside...)  if you are looking for a relaxing vacation this is your place.

Top ten tips that made our stay more enjoyable... 1.) We took the bus to Walmart the first day and stocked up on breakfast food, snacks and adult beverages (the R2 bus will take you right to WM and there are taxi'swaiting out front to take you back for around $130 pesos) 2.) I brought my own mini size spices....pepper, salt, garlic powder and I'm glad I did because it was hard to find 3.) we packed a soft med size cooler and brought it to the beach in our beach bag with water/a few beers 4.) bring your own sun screen because it's pretty expensive *we ran low and had to pay $15 at Walmart (bring the biodegradable kind if you plan to go to any natural water parks...they will not let you use anything else. 5.) bring a lot of small bills for tips for on and off the resort property 6.) small water proof case for cash/credit card if you plan to go on any day trips. 7.) I brought tea tree spray because it's great to keep the bugs away, calm a sunburn and even prevent your skin from itching if you do get a bug bite. 8.) if you eat out, alway ask the hostess if they offer discount/drink specials to Westin guest (you will be sure to get at least a welcome drink). 9.) if you enjoy massages book at Arenas and call in advance and ask if they will honor $55/person for one hour. *they gave us that price if we booked right away. It is across the street from the Ritz on Blvd Kukulcan Km 13.5       10.) Book your transportation in advance from Cancun Cabs $50 round trip in a private van for up to 6 people....I believe.  They were great!

Places you MUST eat at...Baby Lobster *located across the street in the mall on the water.  Great food for a great price!!!  Lemonchello Great Italian food in a romantic setting and very affordable.. Dinner for 2 with 4 drinks the bill was less than $70. We also liked Surfin Burrito *very small & very casual lunch/ late dinner spot.  They are open 24 hours.  You can build your own burrito and their wings were yummy!!!  Keep in mind the outside appearance is underwhelming but the food was great! (you can get on the R2 and it is located across the street from Senior Frogs.

Hope this information helps!

Room Tip: All rooms have an ocean view but the best Views are in floors 5 and above in my opinion.

My daughter and son-in-law who are Starwood club members treated us to a stay at their home base, Westin Lagunamar. We had an absolutely delightful time and our accommodations were lovely. We had a one bedroom suite with separate living room and kitchen on the 8th floor overlooking the ocean and the beautiful main pool area. The kitchen was well stocked although we had no intention of preparing food in our unit. The bathroom was very large and well stocked with amenities. All was extremely clean and very attractively decorated. The staff could not have been more attentive and accommodating. We found everyone to be very, very concerned about service and insuring that we were having a good time. We ate lunch at the resort every day but one as the food was excellent, and the atmosphere at Viento Restaurant and Pool bar was terrific with the views of the ocean and the cool breezes. We had planned to eat off property every evening as there are some wonderful, highend restaurants that we wanted to explore however, we ended up canceling several of those reservations in order to try the Steak night at Vientos and Oceana another evening. We were happy that we did! The resort was building a spa, a sports bar and another restaurant while we were there. These will be an excellent addition to their offerings although, it certainly did not affect the quality of our stay. The only thing I would have preferred to be different is that Vientos bar stay open past 6 pm. It would have been so lovely to gather there after dinner sitting around the fire pits located there or stay until the sunset before leaving for dinner.

If you are reading this, you are most likely like me, doing your research ahead of time to determine where to stay/what to expect. All the reviews I read were pretty much accurate – now that they are done with construction, this place is sophisticated & beautiful, the staff was extremely friendly and the location is perfect if you do not want to be where all the crazy bars are.

As Starwood Platinum members, we were treated just as great as other places we stay at in the Starwood family (a few reviews mentioned they didn’t feel the same warmth – we completely disagree from our experience) From check-in to the concierge and pool staff, everybody was extremely friendly and professional.

And yes, just like every other review, our room wasn't ready until late afternoon. Which was funny because the next day at 9:00 am, the maid came by to clean our rooms so if I had to make one request, it is to have a better system in cleaning the rooms where guests are checking out first so you don’t have to waste your first day waiting to get settled in. (At least we were prepared and expected this).

The 1 bedroom suite was modern and beautiful and we had zero complaints except you can hear noise next door if you have a connecting room. However, when we closed our bathroom/bedroom door at night, we didn't hear the kids next door so it wasnt a big issue.

As a first timer to Cancun, I had no idea what to expect when it came to location on the strip but LOVED being across the street from the fancy/modern mall with Starbucks and other really nice restaurants. If you are looking for something romantic/intimate, def ask concierge to book you a private lagoon at the Thai restaurant across the street ahead of time. Great food and beautiful atmosphere!

If you want to go up toward the club area or the Cancun tourist flea market on the hotel strip, it's a fast 5 minute bus ride or 25 minute walk. Even at 11:00 at night when we went, the buses are modern, new and completely safe to travel in to/from the resort.

And yes, the pool area for chairs wasn’t the greatest but we found a little cabanana hut closer to the upper area pool that was quiet and perfect for us to read/relax, and when we wanted to go swimming in beautiful big infinity pool, we simply walked over. It's not a big deal. Plus, there are plenty of chairs/umbrellas on the beach but just bring a straw from the pool bar to get the umbrellas to stay up. For being so sophisticated and modern, none of the umbrellas on the beach had a pin in them! But seriously, the straw works fine.

My only complaint at the pool area was the first day, the music was blasting everywhere all day long. Somebody must have said something (thank goodness!) because the music was much more quiet after that and for those who wanted to read by the pool/relax, it wasn’t as distracting.

I had a massage in the hut on the beach, and although I made reservations in advance with the Westin spa, they seemed surprised when I showed up. But since they had no other appointments, I had a great massage. When the lawnmowers came close to the hut on the beach, my massage lady walked out and asked them to come back, which was nice of her to think of the guests and their spa experience!

Finally, we would recommend to book a session with the pro photographers at the hotel. For only $10/photo, it is an unbelievable value to get such beautiful photos of your family/loved ones against the gorgeous blue waters and white sand.

So thank you to the Westin Lagunamar for a wonderful stay. Based on how modern/beautiful the resort, the friendly and helpful staff and perfect location on the strip, we would definitely go back and also recommend this place to others!

Room Tip: Buildings 4, 5 and 6 are "prime view" buildings I beleive - we stayed in tower 6 - anythin...
