The Yucatan offers an incredible combination of birding, Mayan ruins, snorkeling and beaches. For birders, the key trick is to stay at the ruins. You will see next to nothing at a Cancun or beach hotel. Best places to stay & bird are the old hacienda in Chichen Itza -- so many birds you have to bring binoculars to breakfast! Equally as good and cheap are the Villas Archeologicas in Coba and Uxmal. Bird at dawn, see the ruins once the birds go to sleep. For water birds, Celestun, Chixculub and Rio Lagartos (flamingos) are superb. If you have to stay on Mayan Riviera, stay as far south as possible and drive to Muyil or Coba for birds. The real jungle is to the south, where Toucans, Motmots, Becard & Jays become common.
