“Nice quiet small hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

I stayed at this hotel many times when I lived in Xalapa, Veracruz and went to the beach on the weekend. Very pleasant, friendly staff and clean. It is situated right on the beach and the area is very private, not that busy with tourists. This really isn't a tourist place, mostly for locals and people from Mexico.

An excellent choice on the Costa Esmeralda. Low key spot with wonderful service and a mostly deserted beach. Although the hotel was full when we stayed there (summer vacation), we couldn't hear the children at all through the walls, and there was always a quiet spot to be found.

My one recommendation would be for them to improve the restaurant (food quality and service). It is not up to the level of the rest of the hotel.

Will definitely go back.

This hotel is for those who enjoy the simple things in life: deserted beaches, good design, and excellent food.

After an hour of checking dreary rooms in nearby mouldering hotels, we finally decided to try the Best Western. What a difference! The rooms are great (see photos), but the best thing is the design of the hotel: a total egalitarian layout! Arranged in a U form that widens at the top, all the rooms have beach views, and all are on the same level. The view to the ocean is open and unobstructed from reception on out . . . great flow!

In addition to the great design, there is the food. (To be honest, the restaurant at the Noray isn't that great.) But the owner's nephew has his own place next door--the Arena--that is the BEST restaurant in Mexico I have ever ever been to! It's that good . . . I can't even describe it!

On a final note--we went on off season (November), which meant that we were the only people in the hotel and on the beach. What a delight!

On our way from Xalapa to Papantla we wanted to spend some days at Costa Esmeralda. It's easy to take the ADO bus which stops next to a hostel. Although there was no real taxi available a man who was at the bus station took us to hotel Noray, we had to pay him 50 pesos for the service. We only could stay for 2 nights, after that the hotel was fully booked. Room was 1000 pesos cash for 3 people or 1200 for payments made by credit card. Hotel is very nice and the room included a living room with fridge and television, clean bathroom and safe. Swimming and kiddy pool and the very quiet beach is less than 1 minute away.
After we checked in we walked for about half an hour and the beach was empty. We could use a drink and some food and we ended up at the wonderful garden of hotel Taboga. This is a new hotel and we talked to the English owner and he and his wife showed us some great rooms so we made up our minds and only stayed at the Best Western for 1 night and moved to this hotel. Not because it wasn't OK but Taboga was nicer.

  • Liked — Close to the very quiet, clean beach
  • Disliked — everything was very OK

We stayed two nights at the Best Western Noray, at the beach in a Gulf coast zone called "Costa Esmeralda" (Emerald Coast), between La Guadalupe and Nautla.
The hotel is quite small, with about 10 rooms around a regular sized adult pool and a kiddie pool (both clean and with warm water).
The room was cozy, with two full beds in a bedroom and a little living room with a cable TV and a small fridge (so you are invited to bring your own beverages).
Everything was clean and there was air conditioned, a nice bathroom and a closet. There were plastic chairs and tables outside every room, making meals a great deal: we asked for room service for food (without extra charge), so we were able to drink our own cool beverages (remember the fridge?). This meant, for instance, that I could have a salad or soup and an excellent shrimp dish with Chilean wine for under 12 dollars. The trick is to bring your beverages from a supermarket. In our case, I went to a Chedraui store in Poza Rica (for water, juices, softdrinks, milk, wine, pastries, cookies and snacks) before heading to the hotel, about 70 kilometers away. Obviously, you need to drive your car or rent one. There are convenience stores and buses in the Costa Esmeralda too, but if you look for a decent wine or discount prices, forget it.
I was surprised that the beach was completely clean, with some little crabs walking from time to time and plenty of seashells. But the most amazing fact was the lack of crowds, taking in account that we visited the area in the middle of school Summer vacations. See my photos of nearby Tecolutla beach and you will see what I mean with crowds: vendors, loud music, kids noise and trash.
The hotel price is a deal: 1404 pesos (about 130 dollars) for a double room per night, including taxes. The hotel has a private parking lot and security boxes in the room.
The Noray is not a luxury hotel, but you will get what a luxury hotel won't be able to give: a closer contact with Mother Nature, no crowds, attention from the owner and still enjoy the good things of civilization (especially the air conditioned and the fridge) without a big price tag.

  • Liked — The beach was like being in a virgin zone
  • Disliked — Some problems with the card-lock system of doors, probably because of humid conditions
