We visited Plateria Gloria on Dec 6th, 2002, on the recommendation of travel tips we found elsewhere on the 'net. We had already visited a couple dozen shops in Taxco and had a fair idea of what was "out there".
This shop has much more selection, and I think finer craftsmanship than most of the other shops. Our mouths dropped open when we saw a fabulous gold plated silver necklace for US$75. I asked my wife, "Do you want this for Christmas?", and she nodded her head enthusiastically!
The salesman kept feeding us a line about how the real price was 1500 pesos, but for us 750. I wonder if we could have chewed them down any further? Sales tehniques all over Mexico are not quite what we're accustomed to in the States. You get used to it after a while, just ignore it and concentrate on the value.
Our Mexican hosts emphasized that our target must always be 1/2 what they first ask The necklace seemed an excellent value to me, so I bought it for $75 without trying to go lower.
If you like quality jewelry bargains, GO TO TAXCO!! It's a wonderfully charming town and you'll spend hours going shop-to-shop, including Plateria Gloria.
BTW, Hotel Monte Taxco is very nice, but you have to take a taxi to the Centro, even if you use the cable car. The hotel is clean, but our bathroom could have used a renovation, in spite of being clean. If that doesn't bother you, go for it!
