Owner description: Orquideas Moxviquil, OM, began in 1994 with a passionate desire to rescue the fallen flora of Chiapas's ever depleting forests. The desire to maintain a small sampling of the natural flora of Chiapas for future generations was the driving force that created this oasis of the varied lifeblood of Chiapas's living natural wonders. These plants rescued from over 200 locations is a divine testament to the passion of rescuing and the desire to save the diminishing gifts of nature for future generations. The plants are preserved from further squandering of natures most delicate and little protected flora gems. This destruction is manifested in the pursuit of food, financial return and greed. OM continues to seek areas of destruction to preserve for the grandchildren of the world an expanding collection of this diversity in a sanctuary of preservation in the valley of San Cristobal, Chiapas. As of October 2014, the collection has over 25,000 rescued plants, comprising 600 species native to Chiapas. The garden located at 2100 meter above sea level has a hothouse for plants from the tierra caliente, hot lands, 1500 meters above sea level down to sea level, a fern grotto, a Maya Medicinal garden, two lakes one that is home to a rare local fish, Popoyote, several seasonal wetlands, extensive areas to walk, meditate and look for birds and other fauna in the cultivated and native wild forests of the Moxviquil 100 hectare reserve. OM has just completed the construction of our second greenhouse dedicated to the Lagos de Montebello, the most bio rich area of Mexico. Bring your headphones to tune in and relax, bring a camera to capture the colors, textures and forms available to you a lunch and a drawing pad. Sit on the last bench in the greenhouse and pretend; pretend you are deep in a Chiapas jungles, the birds will call, the wind will blow and your senses will be bathed in the exotic paradise that is OM. OM is dedicated to enriching your knowledge and enjoyment. One way we do this is by asking each person to please touch the plants, to experience with your fingers the delicate forms, the sharpness, the textural richness of the native plants of Chiapas. Smell and listen for the sounds that permeate the gardens.

“A must see if visiting San Cristobal - Magical”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2011

This is a magical place to visit. Though I have no botanical knowledge or gardening skill, I found the grounds to be captivating. The carefully designed layout and attention to detail makes it fun just to stroll around. Even better if you can get a tour by Cisco, the project's creator and director, who can speak academic speak but also give a nice layperson's guide to the plants, the hydrology, and the significance of the project. Check out the main greenhouse itself with its winding paths through dense vegitation arranged in a setting that feels as natural as is possible in a greenhouse environment. The building itself is a spectacle with its artistic glass. Wildlife lovers will also appreciate the pond system which hosts a fish species that is nearing extinction, but with the help of the Orchid Project may soon be reintroduced to native habitats.

The location is just over a mile north of town and is best reached by cab, which was less than 25 pesos each way. I spent about an hour there, which seems about right unless you are taking a more academic tour.

“Botanical heaven!”

Cisco treated us to a personal tour of the green house - it really is a treat for anyone remotely interested in botany or horticulture.

“What a Place and What a Guy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2011

This Garden on the North Side of San Cristobal is run by a man named Cisco that is originally from Hollywood, CA. He first came to Mexico with his mother many years ago and fell in love with the country. When the raping of the native forests began, he saw a need to rescue the native plants that were being destroyed daily. This garden is the result of that rescue. It is a "not to miss."

“Orquideas Moxviquil OM”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2011

Highly recommend that you either walk from centrale or take an inexpensive taxi to visit the orchid greenhouse and gardens at this attraction. You're visit will be enhanced if Cisco (an American) is available for a brief tour and explanation of his passion for collecting and literally saving many species of orchids natural to Chiapas that local farmers have considered "garbage plants" and often would burn or destroy. The paths through the gardens are interestingly laid out with water features and modern sculptures. There are plenty of bird observation spots in the garden, but there are additional paths through the forest on a small mountain behind the gardens. Bring binoculars.

“Great place to watch or photograph birds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2011

As someone who once came as a visitor to Chiapas and ended up spending the rest of her life in San Cristóbal, I feel blessed for the opportunity that both residents and tourists have to visit such a magical place as Orquideas Moxviquil. It is easy to notice that a lot of work, knowledge and passion were behind the creation of these outstanding gardens and I would urge anyone visiting San Cristóbal to not miss this jewel.
As a Bird photographer I'd like to point out that this is one of the best areas for birdwatching around San Cristóbal, most of the endemics of the region can be easily seen here, both around the greenhouse and the gardens and by hiking the mountain trails. This morning we were visiting with a local group of birdwatchers, bird activity was high and we saw 26 species just by walking around the gardens, many more can be added with a visit to the nearby forest. A couple of nests of White-eared hummingbirds were present and it was possible to watch the females feeding their chicks from just a few feet away. Birds seem to be used to human presence and this allows some great views and a lot of wonderful photographic opportunities. Thanks to Cisco for creating and mantaining this place; I am sure that any birders would love to visit these gardens, birds sure love them already!
