Owner description: An important private collection of traditional Mayan textiles which were given to the owner, Sergio Castro, in thanks for his tireless work for the people of Chiapas. The exhibit includes very rare ceremonial costumes from many communities in Chiapas and are a sign of the high esteem the people have for Don Sergio.Personal tours can be arranged by calling Sergio Castro and scheduling an appointment. Tours are conducted in English, French, Italian and Spanish.Visitors are asked to make a donation to help support Sergio Castro's work of building schools and clean water systems and providing wound care to people with serious burns. Sergio does not accept money from the people he helps and instead uses donations from visitors to the museum to buy building materials and medical supplies

“A must see in San Cristóbal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2011

Don Sergio gives a wonderful presentation of the local regional clothes and customs of the Maya people in this part of Chiapas. His presentation is fascinating and informative. The museum also doubles as a burn and wound clinic, where he attends anybody who shows up. The 30-minute tour I got in English with about six other people was at 6:00 pm and afterwards there was a tour in French. He's funny and informed, multilingual and I suggest you don't miss it. There is no charge but he does have a donation box that supports the clinic.

“A hidden museum gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2011

Collector Sergio Castro has amassed an extensive collection of Mayan textiles and costumes over the last 45 years from his humanitarian works. He gives tours every evening (reservations recommended) of his collection, educates the visitor of the Chiapas region and various indigenous groups, and demonstrates the different languages. This is a must see for anyone wanting to become familiar with the Mayan people and area of Chiapas.
