“Nice place with graet coffee”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2009

Quiet and very nice place. Rooms are clean and quite spacious. Las Mariposas is close to the ADO bus station, so you don`t need taxi to get there. It is also close to the city centre - just 10 minuts walking and next to the Pino Suarez park, so 5 for location. Breakfast - only toast and cornflakes but I`v never had so great coffee before. Even my husband drunk it - strange view, because he doesn`t like coffee.......

My husband and I had a reservation for several days, but ended up moving to Los Frailes after a one night stay.
It wasn't the hotel's fault, but both of us were taken aback by the signs that we were not to put toilet paper in the toilets. My husband was especially dismayed. It was our first night in Oaxaca and we didn't know that this was a problem all over the city. We had a taxi driver take us to "information" where they recommended Los Frailes, a lovely hotel with air conditioning.
Las Mariposas had no air conditioning or tv in the room. They do have a tv a central area for all the guests. My husband and I were watching the tv the first nite and visiting with a guest. At promptly 10:00 the desk clerk came by checking and let us know we had to be quiet. The tv is to be turned off at 10:00. This bothered us and along with the toilet paper problem, we just decided to move. There is more privacy at the Los Frailes.
The room at the Las Mariposas was very nice. We had asked for a quiet room and they accomodated with a very quiet room in the back. At the time of our stay there were 2 separate single women staying at the hotel. It is very safe and very quiet. There is almost a calmness over the hotel that is very nice.

I stayed at Las Mariposas for one month in June. Payment is expected in dollars, not pesos and they will take credit cards. The people who work here and the owner Theresa are very friendly and although only one staff member speaks English, they are very helpful about restaurants, tours, and transportation.
They do go a little overboard on security however. At 10:00 PM, no one is allowed any guests inside the gate. This can be inconvenient if someone is picking you up to go out. Also complete silence is expected after 10:00PM. Once when I was talking on the cell phone to my daughter in my apartment at 9:45 PM, the boy who takes care of the gate at night, knocked on my door and told me I was talking too loud.
The continental breakfasts are very minimal, but the room was very nice and clean. If you ask they will give you a fan.
It's close enough to everything a tourist would need, including only a ten minute walk to the zocalo.

Las Mariposas is a good value. The rooms are quiet and comfortable, and the service is great. The owners are very conscious of the environment and seek to minimize their energy usage and they recycle most things (including water). The location is great: it is within walking distance of the 1st class bus station as well as the central downtown area. The breakfast is a bit too simple (sweet coffee de olla and breads), so if you want a real breakfast you need to visit a restaurant. The staff is happy to help you with suggestions for things to do and directions for getting to where you want to go. There is wireless coverage and a computer for checking email etc., so you won't have to visit cyber cafes.

I loved my stay at Las Mariposas. I arrived at the posada after a long bus ride from Mexico City to Oaxaca, and was greeted by friendly staff, a beyond-beautiful courtyard, and a clean room with a large, cozy bed - not bad for 500 pesos a night!

In the morning, we were served continental breakfast and really tasty cinnamon coffee from a clay pot. The courtyard had a really welcoming atmosphere, and I was able to meet other guests and sit and chat for a while in the morning.

I also thought that the location was perfect. Las Mariposas is really close to Benito Juarez park, and to a really interesting part of town called "Los Arquitos," which was built around Oaxaca's old aqueduct. The zocalo is pretty close, too - maybe about a 15 minute walk.

I stayed for 4 nights, and would love to stay here again sometime. If you're going to be in Oaxaca, definitely consider booking a room at Las Mariposas!

Stayed here for five nights in June, during a very hot spell. The location is great, the rooms are lovely, very clean and its a lovely setting overlooking the court yard (recommend room at the back). For 550 Pesos pn the hotel (well B&B really) was a complete bargain. There isn't any air conditioning in the rooms, although large fans are provided, which did make it uncomfortable given that Oaxaca was really hot and humid during our stay. The breakfast was reasonable, well there wasn't much choice, a fellow guest who stays there regularly said that there is usually a lot more choice and suspected it was due to the lack of tourists. Really impressed by the B&B's ethical stance.

My 15 year old son and I stayed at Las Mariposas in Oaxaca during the Dia De Los Muertos festival in 2008. We stayed here for 5 nights and thought it was very nice for the price. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the gardens are beautiful. The rooms are spare, and lacking in character, but they are clean and comfortable. There is a common area to watch some TV or a movie, and the staff will politely ask you to turn it off and keep your voices down after 10pm. My son and I sat there and played scrabble every night and enjoyed meeting the other guests.

Las Mariposas provides breakfast, coffee and juice in the morning. The breakfast is limited, sweet breads that are fresh and yummy. But if you want anything more, you'll have to venture somewhere else. The coffee is excellent.

There is internet service at the front, it is available during the day if nobody else is using it.

The front gate is locked and there is someone available 24/7 to let you in and out. It is far enough away from the main square so that it is quiet and peaceful, but close enough for an enjoyable walk to all the important sites, including the market, restaurants, bus line and shopping stores.

My son and I had a great time in Oaxaca and would likely stay here again. You can't beat the value for the price. Bring mesquito coils.
