I stayed for at Las Mariposas for almost a month last summer and again for almost a month in August, this year, and I plan to stay there whenever I'm in Oaxaca City. This is a better-than-basic, comfortable, homey small hotel with some charm. It's important to get the right room because the beds in 2 rooms I've stayed in are really uncomfortable (I've made some room recommendations below, having moved around last year because due to work I was in and out). There's no "room service" per se, as in a larger hotel (they won't bring you pizza if that's what you want), but the staff are obliging and interested in doing what they can for guests. Lots of interesting guests from all over, and people meet over coffee and light breakfast (cereal, a pastry) in the morning. There are shared cooking/food storage options and a number of rooms have private basic facilities. It's very central - blacks from anywhere in the centre one would want to go. They reward repeat guests who stay for extended periods with a lower rate. (This time, it cost me $678 US to stay for 3 weeks, considerably below the advertised rate.) I'm fond of this place and see no reason to stay anywhere else when I'm in Oaxaca City, assuming I can get a good bed. The staff have been happy to move me to a different room on request, when this has been possible. Looking at the unhappy review on my sidebar - that guest is unhappy about the front guy (yes, Jorge is a bit gruff); having to be let in after hours (they close the front gate at 8:00 which is a bit early for my taste) but someone sleeps in the front to let guests in; very light breakfast (yes, but go 2 blocks to the Llano Plaza, or Marco Polo which is on the plaza); some confusion about whether rooms were available (I recommend writing to the email address on the website - the person that answers is the one that makes the bookings); the atmosphere is unpleasant (depends on one's attitude; others seem to enjoy themselves and stay for weeks); no privacy in the bathrooms (true for one or two smaller rooms in the back but most rooms have a bathroom with a door that closes; I've been asked by the staff whether or not that was acceptable); coffee not ready at the advertised time (I haven't found that to be the case); no ceiling fans (there is a moveable fan in every room). Sure, there would be "better" hotels in Oaxaca City, but for a lot more $$. Las Mariposas is good value. (Ratings at bottom: fitness centre gets on circle just because there isn't one. There is one a block away. Sleep quality is average just because the rooms aren't consistent. Room service - they get 4 circles because they're super obliging; as noted, they won't bring you food, if that's what you need.)
