“Super friendly service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago

The hotel was really beautiful. The pool was a bit too cold for my taste, but not for my daughter's. The high point was the service, SUPER friendly and welcoming. The location was amazing as well. We did not try the food at the hotel, so cannot say anything about it.

Perla and Jonathan gave us a super service.

We were immediately disappointed with this hotel. The electronics shop across the street was blaring music and the hotel itself is dark unwelcoming. Our room was at the back on the third floor and was tiny, with drab and inexpensive furnishings. The pillows were cheap and the bed was as hard as a rock. The bathroom was cheaply done and poorly lit. We were so disappointed with Hotel de la Parra that shortly after arriving we walked over to another hotel in town (the top ranked on Tripadvisor) to see if they had a room. Fortunately they were able to get us in for the next night. After much arguing with the Hotel de la Parra management (they wanted to charge us for our entire reservation since they are non-refundable unless cancelled well in advance), we were permitted to cancel the remainder of our reservation and only had to spend one night at the hotel. When we woke up in the morning, they had turned the water off to our room and we were told that it would be a while before they could "fix" it. We didn't bother waiting and left, un-showered, as quickly as we could.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, especially not at the high prices they are charging. My brother was also in Oaxaca while we were there and stayed at a hotel that was 1/3 of the price but higher quality than Hotel de la Parra.

The service at Hotel de la Parra was fantastic. The staff was very helpful and attentive and they were definitely the highlight of our stay at this boutique hotel. However, they were the only upside to the experience.

The rooms were small and had limited amenities considering the price being charged. Our confirmation said that we would have a king bed in our room but it was no larger than a queen. The first night we had no hot water in the room and the "iPod charging station" mentioned in our confirmation was nowhere to be seen. The breakfast area was right outside the door of our room and starting every morning at 6AM, we awoke to the sound of dishes, metal pans and the roar of an ancient espresso machine. That might have been manageable if we weren't also being kept awake until late at night by the intense light shining through our window and an air conditioning unit that worked silently during the day before clattering and wheezing all night long.

After spending most of our first couple days walking around Oaxaca and seeing the sights (for which Hotel de la Parra is perfectly situated, a mere 100 meters from the zocalo), we planned to spend our third day at the small but cute looking pool area. Although the area itself was nice, the water in the pool was a murky greenish color that looked neither safe nor inviting.

All in all, we loved Oaxaca and greatly appreciated the staff at the hotel. However, the five star prices combined with the two star amenities would definitely have us looking elsewhere if we returned.

Liked: good location just off the zocalo, minimal street traffic.
Gorgeous old building in excellent condition.
Pool area in the back that is peaceful and comfortable.
Good breakfast with fresh fruits and fresh squeezed juices, as well as interesting egg, meat, bean dishes.
Good air conditioner (though a bit noisy), comfortable though very firm bed.

Disliked: Appliance store directly across from our front room (suite #110) with Oversized speakers playing thumping music all day 9am until 8 pm on certain days (Thursday, Friday) when we were here - most annoying, enough to make us not return to this otherwise quiet oasis. We did ask the front desk for help on this issue, but they had no response.

This property has the makings of a first class hotel. A few issues need to be addressed to get there: noise from across the street is at the top of the list. More English speakers, quieter air conditioner also suggested.

I start my review with kudos to those working at the hotel who helped us all they could with our requests, once we were at the hotel.
So,
I tried booking online directly with them, ut was not responded to. They also advertised a golf package online, and we never received any responses online to the inquiries either.

we booked a third party booker, and were confirmed right away through that. We upgraded our room on arrival to a suite, which was spacious, clean and comfortable. We could not make the ac fan function, and it was stuck on high, however, we did not complain about this. The room is sealed tightly, to help mitigate street noise, so we fiddled wiith that ac control quite a bit. Across the street from the hotel is an appliance store, with speakers THIS big, blasting from 10 am to 8pm. We know the hotel cannot control this, but yikes!

We checked out earlier than our original depature plan, for an emergency, and the bill took some time to rectify, and we at first were oresented with a sum twice what ewe owed. We figured it out, but were surprised at the level of confusion.

the location was very good for our purposes. Easy to find with a map, as we had our car.

Room Tip: None of yhe rooms have windows to the outside, other to an interior courtyard

Location can't be beat. 1/2 block from the zocalo. Easy walk to Mercado, Santo Domingo, Alcala and major sites. cabs galore outside front doors. Yet very quiet despite proximity.

Hotel did mot seem to be full when we were here. Maybe it's because it wasn't or maybe because there are so few rooms. Poolside area and breakfast courtyard are lovely yet we never saw more than one other room there. Daily breakfast is delicious -- both buffet and a la carte.

Staff is quite friendly with typical Oaxacan warmth but more efficiency than we've seen in other Mexican hotels. Just seemed smarter with a few minor hiccups.

The common areas as mentioned above are lovely. We stayed in a "suite" with two full beds and a futon on the 3rd floor which accommodated our family of 5 quite well. but our minor beefs were with the room:

A) air conditioning unit was undersized and very loud when it engaged. It did not keep up with 90 degree heat. And when it engaged we were frequently woken up in the night.

B) Water pressure in shower was very weak at best and hot water hard to come by. Ironically pressure was great in the sink.

C) Beds were hard and not to our taste. Pillows were very good.

D) outdoor pool was lovely and shaded but unheated. Only the bravest (or in our case, youngest) of souls would venture in.

Would not hesitate to recommend strongly as value was also quite high.

Excellent stay!! Thank you!!
