“Fresh, green, good del dia”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

This is a great spot for their menu del dia. It isn't often that a cafe has a creative menu del dia that will surprise and delight. Today I eat some really good cilantro and ginger soup with sesame seeds and pine nuts, along with a quiche that had sweet patato and a nice flaky crust, and a fresh baby greens salad. The watermelon agua hit the spot for a thirst clincher. All including fresh baked bread for 75 p. good ambience and bookstore adjacent. Wifi. If your up that way, go for it.

“Casual, funky, good value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

This little restaurant/library gave us a great lunch in a vine-topped spot. We had a good salad, and the menu del dia which was a great value including agua de guayaba, salad, rice, and curry vegetables (the curry chicken was also fabulous), and the chocolate cake was the best mousse/graham cracker crust I've ever tasted!

“Very Pleasant Food, Ambience and Good Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

My husband and I have eaten at La Jicara twice and have really enjoyed the menu del dia. We haven't yet ordered anything off the regular menu. The Menu del Dia is served Monday through Friday and the Jicara website tells which days are vegetarian, meat, or fish, although vegetarian options may be available most days in addition to the entre of the day.

The menu del dia currently costs 75 pesos and includes homemade bread, a choice of two soups, the entre (today there was a separate salad in addition to the soup, perhaps because the entre plate had a lot of sauce), agua de fruta in a pitcher, and coffee (Americano, expresso or latte) or a wide selection of teas. The salad dressing appears to be house made and actually tastes very good, one of the reasons we returned so soon. The salad was a wonderful mixture of very fresh lettuce, shredded beets, jicama, and tomatoes. All the food just feels and looks healthy!

Service can be a bit slow, but it's so pleasant to be sitting in a leafy courtyard, listening to low key international music, that one gets to slow down a bit and just relax. It's certainly not a high energy fast food restaurant! The samll staff is constantly on the go and the tables are filled, often with groups of friends getting together.

La Jicara also hosts occasional films (currently Palestinian) at night and concerts usually listed in the Oaxaca Calendar on line. The book store and small gallery areas are quite interesting. It feels like a good space with it's heart and values in the right place. They do run out of specials, so eating early around 2:00-2:30 may be a good idea if you want the menu del dia.

“Cool vibe, food was just okay.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2012

This place is a fav for hippie/hipsters and aspiring revolutionaries of the local and international variety. The little bookstore read like who's who in revolution and protest opiners. We went with local friends, but was surprised the band was from the US with a self-described genre of "cow-funk.". I'm probably not cool enough to know what that is. Attending the show didn't enlighten me at all.

The food was just so-so. In a town where an amazing meal is always just around the corner, I wouldn't waste food dollars here. Come for drinks and to conspire against the man, but dine elsewhere.

“Great healthy food with great ambience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2012

La Jicara is a small restaurant in a vine-covered courtyard with lots of other plants, giving a relaxing atmosphere. The food is very fresh & well-prepared, without lots of heavy fat added. There is a good selection of vegetarian offerings as well as fish & meats. The soup of the day on two visits was outstanding. The salads are beautifully balanced & dressed. The menu del dia is very good value, with soup, salad, main course & ague fresca. Save room for dessert off the a la carte menu, with the chocolate pie with strawberry sauce being an outstanding indulgence.
