My friend and I stayed at Las Golondrinas last week during during the teachers strike which closed most of the museums and restaurants near the zocalo. 60,000 protestors took over the zocalo, but we still had the most wonderful and magical time because of the charming gardens and cleanliness of our accomodations, the helpfulness of hotel staff, and our driver Roberto Gavidia, whose ad was posted on the wall near the reception area. Roberto helped us make the most of our short visit. He took us to woodcarvers, weavers, markets, ruins and churches, recommended restaurants, located a camera store, and was very knowledgeable (in english) and entertaining, honest and humorous about history, customs, art, and daily life. He made our first visit to Oaxaca one to remember and made it more special because we explored more of the countryside and met so many people. We had him for just 2 days 9-5, and wished we had booked him for more. Roberto also knew that the waterfall and hiking trail we wanted were also closed, so we didn't waste time going there.
Our room 4A at Las Golondrinas (two single beds) was plain, but very clean, pleasant, quiet and sunny. I liked the firm bed, beauty right outside our room, breakfast in the garden (We tried a few other places for breakfast, but the garden can't be beat for price, quality, and beauty) and the location. We are teachers who have traveled widely and came to Oaxaca for the art and the magical experience we had heard about. We would return to Las Golondrinas in a heartbeat. The photos by another reviewer helped me choose Las Golondrinas. Thank you.
