My friend and I stayed at Las Golondrinas last week during during the teachers strike which closed most of the museums and restaurants near the zocalo. 60,000 protestors took over the zocalo, but we still had the most wonderful and magical time because of the charming gardens and cleanliness of our accomodations, the helpfulness of hotel staff, and our driver Roberto Gavidia, whose ad was posted on the wall near the reception area. Roberto helped us make the most of our short visit. He took us to woodcarvers, weavers, markets, ruins and churches, recommended restaurants, located a camera store, and was very knowledgeable (in english) and entertaining, honest and humorous about history, customs, art, and daily life. He made our first visit to Oaxaca one to remember and made it more special because we explored more of the countryside and met so many people. We had him for just 2 days 9-5, and wished we had booked him for more. Roberto also knew that the waterfall and hiking trail we wanted were also closed, so we didn't waste time going there.
Our room 4A at Las Golondrinas (two single beds) was plain, but very clean, pleasant, quiet and sunny. I liked the firm bed, beauty right outside our room, breakfast in the garden (We tried a few other places for breakfast, but the garden can't be beat for price, quality, and beauty) and the location. We are teachers who have traveled widely and came to Oaxaca for the art and the magical experience we had heard about. We would return to Las Golondrinas in a heartbeat. The photos by another reviewer helped me choose Las Golondrinas. Thank you.

Enjoyed five delightful nights at Las Golondrinas. The courtyards alone are worth the cost. Flowers everywhere, very helpful service, very clean and well-tended. Had reservation problems (our email at fault) but the staff worked very hard to accommodate our needs on the spot. Room GG on the first courtyard was a triple room (a double bed and single bed) with fabulous view and some additional privacy. We did, indeed, find that all beds in Mexico are hard mattresses (unless you book a hotel that was created specifically for citizens of the USA!). Also, know that Las Golondrinas does NOT accept credit cards... only cash - that was not a pleasant surprise for us. And finally, the area in which the hotel is located is not the cleanest neighborhood, and has a great deal of traffic. Nevertheless, we walked wherever we wanted to go in town and had no problems. In fact, it was fortunate we were NOT near the Zocalo, as several blocks in all directions from it were occupied by tarp/tent cities of teachers on strike/protest! Apparently this happens every May... so be forewarned!

Very sweet little place to stay. It's a "hide-away" so if you're looking to party, this is not it. But if you like a taste of Mexico and a relaxed atmosphere you will do well here.

The Las Golondrinas is a small but lovely little hotel. There are lots of flowers and plants all around the little patios that are next to all the rooms. Our room was comfortable especially late in the afternoon with the fan running. The hotel has a small "cafeteria" where you can get a hot breakfast at a reasonable price. NOTE: Oaxaca is not the place to journey to during the middle of May! It gets a touch hot during the midday. Hotel rates are now $47.00/day payable in cash. No cards accepted.

Since most of the recent reviews cover the basics, I will focus on what we discovered that was a surprise! We had been planning our trip to Oaxaca all year and read many positive reviews of the Los Golondrinas. Our experience there definitly exceeded our expectations!
First, the front desk is staffed 24 hours a day which was a very good feeling since Oaxaca is a busy city. They sell cold sodas and have safe deposit boxes so you can leave your passport and extra cash while you are out and about. The lobby has a huge street map, a private room with a pay phone, plus a courtesy phone should you need to make local calls.
You can leave your room key with them when you head out for the day. We came in late one evening (9pm) and found the entrance door on the street locked tight. Ring the bell and they will come let you in! There is a "social room" in the front near the office furnished with cozy couch and chairs, books, magazines and a tinted glass (private) cubicle w/ a fast new computer (5 pesos per hour). At the suggestion of another reviewer we booked a king-bed room ($55) which meant we had a comfortable sitting area and spacious bathroom - toilet in one room, shower in the other. The rooms have a high ceiling, fans, lots of lights for reading and beautiful arched windows. We were stocked everyday with clean towels, a liter of water plus 2 small bottles of water, perfect for tossing in your backpack. The location is central to everything we wanted in the few days we had to explore. We had breakfast there our first morning and the food was delicious. One morning we requested laundry service for a few items and returned that afternoon to find everything bagged & folded in our room. The grounds are as beautiful as the pictures you see here - colorful, lush, clean and quiet. On the day we departed we needed a cab at 5:30 am which they arranged for us. Staff came and knocked to let us know it was time to go. Every single thing about our stay was was MUY BIEN and we would return there without hesitation!
