“Pleasant stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

Hotel Aitana is a charming place in Oaxaca. The beautiful courtyard serves as breakfast place and is tastefully decorated with Mexican crafts. The rooms and bathrooms are quite simple but pleasant, all of them opening to an inner courtyard. So if you open a door or window others can look inside but that didn't seem a problem to me. However, the beautiful roof terrace is not as peaceful as it looks on the photos as you do hear there all the noisy buses going up the street. But the management is obviously not to be blamed for this. In fact, the manager is extremely helpful, offering tips on how to go on trips by collectivo to the crafts villages or other sights around the city. I would highly recommend the place.

“Risk of Legionella in the hot water system”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

Cute hotel, friendly staff, nice courtyard, but there is a big heath risk in their hot water system.
We had problems getting hot water in the shower, it was barely warm for a shower. The staff insisted they put the set point at 45°C, but it was barely 30°C. In any case, 45°C is very dangerous!!!
There is a high risk of Legionella in the hot water system. The bacteria multiply where temperatures are between 20-45°C.
The bacteria are dormant below 20°C and do not survive above 60°C. That is why hot water systems are not allowed for human use with setpoints below 65°C.
I explained this, but they couldn't care less.

“Nice hotel in convenient location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

Hotel Aitana is in a really good location, just a short walk to the zocalo, Santo Domingo church, restaurants etc and the service we received was very good. The second floor terrace is a lovely space.

“Definite pluses and minuses”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

I spent a week at the Hotel Aitana in January. There were a number of really nice things about the place, but also some real drawbacks.

On the plus side, the hotel is charming, with a lovely little central courtyard and rooftop garden. The rooms are nicely decorated, clean and have tile floors. Most of the staff, especially Mario, are very helpful and some English is spoken. The breakfast doesn't have a lot of variety, but it's of good quality. The hotel is a bit uphill from the central old town, but still conveniently located. It's an old facility but has good character.

However, there are some downsides, including some things I wouldn't put up with from a Motel 6 in the U.S. The lack of air conditioning is a real problem if the temperature is over 80; the fan just didn't do it for me. The plumbing is bad, including a shower that was usually either too hot or too cold. I had noise problems here, since the front window/door and bathrooms are poorly insulated-- mostly other guests who were talking loudly until midnight, or evening fireworks nearby. Crespo is a very busy road, despite its small size; it seems to be a major route for buses and trucks through town. This wasn't a big problem for noise, but the pollution from the vehicles detracted a lot from the rooftop garden. The maintenance of the facility is a bit iffy (funky shower head and grout problems). Finally, the room service was sub-par; they frequently took towels, for example, without replacing them.

I don't think there's a lot of choice in hotels in Oaxaca, and I guess I'm used to higher-end facilities. I felt like I was slumming it at Hotel Aitana. I think it's a reasonable place to stay, but it has some issues that it's good to be aware of beforehand.

“Fine but terrible shower!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

The hotel is in a pretty good location, although you can definitely get closer to the Zocalo. Breakfast good, friendly staff. Our biggest complaint was the shower in our room which consisted of a few trickles of water. I had to bathe in the sink and I have no idea how my companion managed to wash her hair!! Ask for a room away from the courtyard if you don't want to be woken up early.
