“Downhill and disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

We were big fans of this property before this last visit and not sure we'll return next time since there are more options. Our room was average and quiet, next to a beautiful courtyard. We could not believe when we say them set up for a banquet on the lawn RIGHT outside of all the rooms in that corridor. The fiesta started at 9:30 and was NOISY, finally ending at 1AM. The front desk was oblivious to our calls. This is a huge property and there are lots of alternative locations for this kind of a banquet so this was an example of truly incompetent planning. To add salt to the wound, we asked for a wake-up call the next morning at 5:30 AM to catch our flight - we got a call at 4:30 AM!!! Argghhh@#!$! They were indifferent to our complaints the next morning - we left a long letter for the manager thinking we'd hear something. TOTAL silence. It's a shame since it's a beautiful setting but likely our last time there

(Now known as the Quinta Real Oaxaca.) Don't get me wrong. The facilities are immaculate and genuine. Everywhere there's a historic patina that even the most highly-paid Disney technologist would be hard pressed to reproduce. If it's a visual feast you seek, and related ambience, this hotel will deliver for you in spades. If you're looking for pampering service that anticipates your every stress, avocado wraps, heel clicking table-side service, spotless white linen table cloths set with glistening stuff, and your Italian sommelier -- fuggedaboutit. But wait a second .. this is .. Oaxaca ... isn't it?

The restaurant was very nice and offered excellent authentic local fare. The waiter staff seemed a tad stretched. Our bedrooms and bathrooms were thoroughly scrubbed and cleansed to perfection every day. The pool area was excellent with attendants keeping an eagle eye to see that towels, umbrellas and what-not were quickly at hand.

You do want to select a room that opens into the interior courtyards as the streets are noisy. Quibble department -- our room (the King Carlos suite) could have had better lighting fixtures. But ... it was a monastery.

we spent 4 nights in this hotel which is changing its name to the Quinta Real. Because it is located in an old convent, there are no exterior windows making the room dark. There is a small window that opens onto the interior courtyard. The room contained 2 beds, an chest of drawers, and a tv cabinet but no chair. The bathroom was small but adequate but had an odor problem. There were 2 drains in the floor that emitted a foul odor- when we complained they fixed it. However we do not expect this kind of a problem in a hotel of this caliber. There is no elevator and the stairs are steep and uneven; it is an ancient building.
The courtyard outside our room was beautiful with lots of pots of flowers. Breakfast is not included; recommend eating off the menu, the buffet is not worth the money.
i recommend that your tour the building, but stay somewhere else.

For a hotel which claims to be a luxury venue, the Camino Real Oaxaca (now called Quinta Real Oaxaca) offers extremely poor service. When we arrived by car at the entrance, we were told there was no parking, and we had to take the car to a parking garage ourselves, a few blocks off the hotel. Although the public spaces are beautiful, the room was small and crammed, in need of serious remodelling. But the worst part came on Friday afternoon, when we intended to take a nap, and were waken up ten minutes later by extremely loud music. The front desk´s answer was that the hotel was full, and thus we could not have another room away from the noise (a weekly event for the hotel guests, we were told), so they could do nothing about it. Of course, we were not told of this at our arrival, nor when when we made the reservation. I strongly recommend looking for another hotel in Oaxaca, with more quality surroundings and, of course, better service.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the hotel events, be it a wedding or the weekly festival for the tourists...

We stayed for three nights and while exquisitely maintained, we were not upset when our stay ended and we moved to a nearby B&B. Though gorgeous -- the common spaces are picturesque and plentiful -- the rooms were small and very few amenities, if any at all, were included in the base price. No free wi-fi felt particularly absurd in this day and age.
We did not eat in the restaurant. We did use the pool, which is wonderful. And, if traveling with children, a definite plus. The staff were very helpful and courteous. Professionalism abounds. But, for the money, it is worth looking into other spots and, we think, a traveler can certainly get more for less at numerous other places in Oaxaca.
Lastly, it's worth noting that the location is wonderful, though being so central perhaps means you're less likely to get out and see more of the city.
We would not stay here again, though our stay was perfectly pleasant.

Room Tip: Figure out how to not have your huge window facing the loud street or risk being woken up when you...

No parking, no Internet, no quietness, no service at all, no decent beds, no space in the bathrooms but a lot of fare.
The place is amazing, and it is a total disgrace when you compare it with the rest of the hotels, like La Casona de Tita or Casa Azul.

We stayed at the Quinta Real in Oaxaca (previously Camino Real) and enjoyed it. It was quaint and beautiful. We were able to book tours in the hotel, which would have been nice to know ahead of the trip (since we showed up with tours fully booked) - their website needs to be integrated into the new Quinta Real company and include better information on tours and airport transportation. The food was good, with a nice buffet each morining, but rather expensive.
