Just look for the crowd. Early arrivals get chairs. But standing works very well, too. We've heard professionals and high-schoolers giving their best.

“Town Center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

There was a book fair in the zocalo. Also, it wasn't just a big open square like DF - it had some landscaping and benches for relaxing. There was a great taco vendor on the north side of the square.

“A People-Watcher's Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

Vibrant, colorful, full of energy. Many locals there just going about their business. Have a coffee at one of the cafes. Get your shoes shined. Eat a fresh roll that you purchased at Bamby's bakery a block off the square. Listen to the free concerts every Sunday at noon.

“Big and busy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

The zocalo, or central square of Oaxaca City, is not a quiet place, but it's a great place to watch the world go by. Many restaurants and cafes line the square (actually a sort of double-square), so you can sit and watch if that suits you, but don't expect to be left alone. Vendors of all kinds are likely to demand your attention.

“Vibrant and full of energy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

What a trip to spend a few hours on the Zocalo here in Oaxaca...full of travellers and locals, lots of music, many hawkers (we learned quickly to do the dismissal of the locals--make clear eye contact, and then look away pointedly, feigning complete disinterest) and lots of mezcal shots in one of many plaza-side eateries. We enjoyed the people-watching and taking in the atmosphere of this vibrant and lively city.
