This restaurant opened a few months ago and after at least half a dozen visits I think we can say with confidence that it is one of the best choices in a neighbourhood where there are many good places to eat. This part of Polanco is one of the best eating and drinking districts in the world - great places and all pretty sophisticated. You need to go further afield for chains and Irish bars. This is a safe, attractive district, and there must be a hundred eating establshments within a two minute walk. Standing out in that environment is tough, but Lampuga pulls it off.
The menu is part Mexican, part international, and the daily changes and specials are few. The bulk of the menu has remained cosntant since it opened, and given the quality of the food that is a good thing. The staff are attentive and well-trained, and they have terraces front and rear as well as inside. Plenty of choice for the weather.
The shrimp tacos are outstanding, and you buy a plate of them, or by the piece. The carnitas de pato (duck tacos) are execllent too, although they come in a maize tortilla and I prefer the flour ones - just ask if you share my taste. The Lampuga (Mahi Mahi) is excellent, as is the ceviche and tuna. They also have an outstanding burger, great grilled steaks - the entrecote we had last night was really excellent and so big that our dogs are able to agree!
One of our favourite dishes we call, ;'The most expensive French fries in the world'. About 150 pesos (ten dollars or seven pounds) gets you a portion of crispy French fries... but they are mixed up with chopped up white anchovies. I guess it's a more sophisticated way of adding vinegar than British fish and chips.
Overall though the value here is good, and unusually for Mexico the white wine list extends to 10 or 12 different wines and the prices are okay. If you find yourself in Polanco and spoilt for choice then give Lampuga a go. A thumbs up!
