We stayed Here for two nights in March 2014. The hotel location is excellent, right next to the Zocalo. We spent a fair amount of time with our windows open taken all the activity on the Zocalo. The hotel itself is old. Not in a decrepit way, but in a way that feels authentic. We stayed in a King Suite and were amazed by the high ceilings and huge windows. The marble bathroom was huge as well. All the touches of first class historic hotel were there. Monogrammed sheets and towels. Turn down service with chocolates and other trinkets. Excellent room service. Breakfast was included in our stay, but we were confused by how the tickets worked and ended up with food we had to pay for. It was reasonably priced, but it would be worth asking some questions before you order. The restaurant at the top of the hotel has beautiful views of the Zocalo and was quite romantic. It seems the restaurant is only open to hotel guests.

This is one of the best hotels I've every stayed in - for location, beautiful rooms and excellent service. We stayed here twice, first for 2 nights, then for 5 nights. We paid the same price for each room - $140 Australian per night without meals. Our first room (#320) was an Economy Double - a lovely big room with two queen beds, armchairs, desk, flat screen TV, wifi, large bathroom. It was quiet - it had a view on the courtyard which is lined with cloth murals of trees. Our next room was an Economy Queen (#306) on the corner of the building with views to the Zocalo and pedestrian streets. Three big windows and lots of sun, one huge four-poster bed and all the features of the previous room. I preferred the second room for the view but both were simply excellent. Rooms were spotlessly clean, there were bathrobes, slippers, heaps of good toiletries, a goodnight snack on the pillow, everything you could want. The staff were super-helpful and friendly. The hotel building is stunning, an art deco lobby with Tiffany glass ceiling and an old-style elevator. Every day there is a little newsletter slipped under your door with recommendations of places to go (we discovered the Museo Soumaya thanks to this) and usually a discounted offer on drinks or food in the hotel. We were fortunate to be there on a Saturday where there is all-day brunch on the 4th floor terrace overlooking the Zocalo; the hotel gave us a special price of 2-for-1 which was great value. Get up there at 9am sharp, as the tables are taken very quickly. I'll stay there again when I visit Mexico City.

Traveling with my wife and toddler in tow, we booked a room at Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico for two nights at the tail end of our 10 day trip in Mexico City to experience the historic parts of town. When the taxi stopped in front of the hotel, we were unsure we were in the correct location as the beautiful lobby featured in many photographs isn’t visible from the street. The hotel lacks a grand entry from the street level. Walk up the steps and there you’ll find the elegant lobby with birds chirping in gilded cages. Upon check-in I tried to get a room with a view facing the main plaza but they were unavailable. I realized later that there were only a few rooms that face into the plaza as the broad side of the hotel face a pedestrian street. I usually stay in business hotels in Mexico City with modern furnishings and you could feel the contrast of age in this hotel. Our room was comfortable though it felt like a nightclub was on the other side of the wall with music pounding bass into the late hours on our first night. Since our room was at the end of the hotel abutting the building next door, I literally think there was a nightclub next door. Be aware that since the hotel is highly featured for its historic lobby, there are frequently outside visitors who come into the hotel and venture onto some guest floors.

Service was offered in a friendly manner with less sterile formality found at some hotels and we enjoyed the approachable personality of the staff. We especially appreciated the professional and cordial service provided by the front desk manager, Enrique. He provided clear explanation of accommodations during check-in, quickly resolved a minor charge dispute at the lobby cafe to insure a promised discount was honored, made sure my toddler son didn’t leave without a teddy bear (lion) and got us a last minute car service to the airport. It felt like if we had a problem, Enrique would do his utmost to fix it. A comfort during our stay.

If we had another opportunity to stay in the historic district of Mexico City, I’d book the hotel again but reserve a room facing the plaza in advance to get that postcard experience.

This hotel tops my list of great hotels around the world. We stayed here in late November/early December. We got there at about 12pm, and was disappointed at the fact that our early check-in was not available (even the Ritz-Carlton in Cancun had our room available at 9:30am). The rooms are quite spacious, and are very clean. The welcome champagne and room dessert were nice touches. We had a junior suite with the Zocalo view and that made up for everything that went wrong at that hotel. You cannot beat the location and view (for the suites anyway), because you're in the center of all the action. Once inside though, I was not as impressed as I thought I would be. The ceiling glass is nice and all, but the couches, carpeting, dim poor lighting, and almost empty lobby needs major work. I also think that the plastic poinsettias they were putting on the rails inside the hotel were of very bad taste. I'd think that they would put something a bit better- oh well. When we got to our room a whole bunch of plates were outside our room, probably from the earlier guests, but they were still there 2-3 hours afterwards, not a good sign. Service at the restaurant upstairs was very good, but we did have problems with one of the female waiters- very poor service and attention were given to us by her. Website has a poor job of responding to emails/messages, I tried contacting them twice about my dinner reservation, and of course they did not have it on records, but they did fit us in since we were guests. Anywho, I give this hotel a 4, which still leaves room for improvement. I've already made reservations again for this hotel for my birthday weekend in September, because overall the hotel location and views are great.

All Staff Members exceeded all expections, without exception. Included the following Cafe Staff: Jose, Captian, Salvador, Estan, Luis, and Polet. Portor: Javier, Salvador. Doorman: Jamie, Renato -both were very helpful with information and Renato came in early just to see us off & help with our luggage. Hotel was clean & beautiful - this goes without saying - just look at their web site!! Location perfect. All in one service for tours, money exchange, directions, recommendations. I would return here again & again. I feel the staff at this hotel makes it a Gran Hotel indeed. We also felt very safe at this hotel.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the Zocole - can be a little loud with traffic noise.

Rating mainly for the chef and the views lit up at night. Good menu especially the entree soups and salads. Average service for a five star. Cold breezy night and only two heaters were available. We were told they were bringing another (perhaps a language barrier) but none appeared. When asked after 20 mins we were told they didn't have another. They move one closer but still on the other side of the table next to us. Asked for it to be brought closer and turned up after the others tables left and they said it was on high. Note, it was on low from when they moved it. We were told the restaurant was closing in half an hour so we had to decide quickly on desert and coffees. When they started moving furniture around us, we thought to skip coffee and desert.

Lovely old fashioned hotel with a large 'Tiffany' style glass roof.
The hotel is right on Zotec sq, so all the main attractions are just a few minutes walk away.
You also have all the main shopping streets very close.

The rooms are large and clean with nice large bathrooms (bath and shower), (the bath was a bit small but this seems to be an issue in all hotels in mexico).

Hotel has 2 restaurants with the main one having a large open balcony overlooking the square serving delicious authentic Mexican food.

Staff speak English and could not do enough to help.

Fantastic hotel would highly recommend.

Room Tip: Try to get a room as high as possible and off the main square.
