We stayed here for two nights during our honeymoon in Central Mexico.
The details: Hotel is located adjacent to the main cathedral within walking distance of churches, museums, some restaurants and bars. The airport is approximately 1/2 hour from the hotel without much traffic and costs around $20.00 normally.
The bad: The location is slightly seedy. If you want a safer, more tourist- friendly area, stay in the Zona Rosa. There are restaurants nearby but we were hard pressed to find one that we enjoyed. When we arrived at the airport in Mexico City we were told that there was a protest going on in the main square and that no cars could get in and out. This is a common occurrance in Mexico City and you will generally have to wait in long traffic or not be able to get to your destination because of a protest. After fighting with the man for 10 minutes in Spanish he finally agreed to take us as close as possible. We had nowhere else to go with all of our luggage. We were eventually dropped off right in front of the hotel after an extended time in traffic (VERY common in MC) and a hefty cab fare. Our hotel room was on the top floor. It was an average room, but comfortable. We paid for the tour to the pyramids of Teotihuacan from the travel agency in the lobby. It was a good price, however, we did not realize that the tour stopped at several other locations in Mexico City including a market, several other cathedrals, etc. and when we eventually made it the hour trip out to the ruins we were limited on time. The restaurant at the hotel was horrible. We had breakfast here and found both the service and the food to be below average. You cannot, and should not, get cabs from around the hotel. Ask the doorperson to get you a cab. You will wait 5-10 minutes.
The good: The service is wonderful, check in and all interaction with staff at the hotel was impressive. They were even nice enough to order us a pizza late one night. The travel company in the lobby is helpful and affordable. The hotel is clean and attractive. The rooms are very standard, but you are not paying for luxury. Ours had two double beds, a sofa, bathroom with shower only, and a purified water tap in the bathroom. There was not a safe or lockbox in our room, but they offered to keep valuables at the front desk if you asked. There are two beautiful rooftop balconies/patios on the top floor that offer great views of the city, however, they generally close around 10:00 pm. The hotel bar was average...however, great prices for Mexico City and friendly service.
Overall, I would stay at the hotel again....if it were not in the same location. A more impressive hotel in the same area is the Hotel Majestic. We had dinner here and the hotel was beautfiul. I would prefer to visit the cathedrals and other sites during the day and stay in a place where I felt a bit safer that offered more restaurants and nightlife. One thing to keep in mind in visiting Mexico City that I still cannot get used to....things open and close at random hours which may change daily (including museums), traffic makes it nearly impossible to travel long distances within the city, and protests frequently close areas and cause major travel issues.
