Hostel Montejo is located in the relatively quiet neighborhood of Azuras, within walking distance to Chapultepec park and the swanky neighborhood of Polenquo. Basically this is a large home with all private rooms (doubles and singles) that surround an open courtyard. At the time of this writing, the dorms were not in use (and I didn't even see where they were).
The two kind hosts of Montejo are Aaron and Manuel. They are always present in their ground floor room (all of the private rooms are on the 2nd) and are always willing to help with any questions, directions, and help you may need. Aaron is excellent with helping establish an itinerary for the day. He made my trip very easy by laying out each day's activities and how to get there (and places to avoid).
The rooms are fairly spartan, but clean and cheerfully painted. The bathroom facilities are also clean and hot water is plentiful. The self service Breakfast room is open from 8am to 10:45am and is a simple but satisfying toast (with butter & jam), cereal, and coffee.
I felt very safe at Hostel Montejo and highly recommend it. It is a little bit out of the way from the major sights, but with Aaron's excellent directions and the excellent subway & bus system, this is an excellent choice for your Mexico city home base. I paid around $20/night and reserved through Hostelworld.com. Please email me with any questions.
