“Great for Foreigners”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2012

I'm actually reviewing Spuntina Alameda on Independencia. It's the same company, Malazzo, just a different location. They have an English language menu and a woman on call who speaks excellent English. We never felt like we were eating in an American establishment, however. We were seated near a Portuguese couple and another couple from China. Two Americans came in just as we were leaving, but everyone else was Mexican. My wife ordered ravioli that was stuffed with queso panela, a type of Mexican cheese, and topped with a marinara sauce that had local poblano peppers. I had asparagus with a large salad, and we both had desserts. The servers and hosts were very nice. They also had their own security out front. I definitely recommend it.

“I liked the atmosphere and food....safe area!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2011

A very fun restaurant and fun atmosphere. I went alone, sat at a table next to the sidewalk and had fun listening, watching and talking a little bit to the vendors trying to sell you "stuff". The food was very good and the prices were very reasonable. Good location to relax and people watch and at the same time get good food. Try it and have a good attitude !

“Great location except for the street vendors”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2010

We sat outside on the terrace on a warm, late afternoon ... a great place for people-watching, and the staff lets you stay for as long as you like. The street vendors are a continuous annoyance, but we were amazed when a lady at the next table bought a 2 gallon potted palm off the head of a roving vendor!

Onto the food: Only so-so. I recommend ordering the sangria, where one gets a pitcher of fruit with some liquid and then you order a bottle off the wine list to pour over all. The empanadas were barely OK; the Argentine beef (~$30) was plentiful, definitely chewy, and quite bloody (though ordered "medio") by American standards. Hubby usually orders medium-rare in the US, but this steak I would call bloody-rare. The Rack of lamb (~$40) gets you 2 racks of delicious lamb studded with garlic, rubbed with spices before grilling. I recommend splitting the entree and ordering sides of potatoes and salad for a more balanced meal. The spicy chicken (~$30) was also a winner, but again, far too much meat to eat comfortably. Our side orders of potatoes & veg never arrived. We four split a tasty chocolate mousse for dessert.

Overall, I thought Spuntino was very expensive for lunch, but an experience not to be missed.

“Place to see and be seen, maybe just not to eat.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2009

Really great location in the Polenco district of Mexico City. A very close walk from hotels like the W, JW Marriott, Intercontinental, etc. Service was good, ambiance was great, the restaurant was very open to the street, almost without walls, and is on a prime corner lot adjacent to other cafes and coffee houses. The crowd seemed to have a great mix of locals and visitors, and some of the locals seemed very young, hip, and vibrant. Unfortunately the food didn't really match the rest of the experience. They have great bread there! The entrees themselves however (we had pizza and lasagna) were really mediocre at best.
