“A great value for the spartan traveler”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2009

Having stayed at Casa Bertha no fewer than 10 times since 2003, I feel qualified to comment on this unique casa de huespedes. I travel Mexico on the cheap (about $50 USD daily for food, lodging and travel) and have found CB to be an exceptional value. Thanks to Norma, the hard-working cleaning person, the whole place is immaculate. Jorge and Juan (sons of the owners) are normally available between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. They are most friendly and helpful, with somewhat limited English. The 10 or so basic rooms share baths, and aren't all that large, but are peaceful and just 150 pesos per person (about $11USD in April 2009). The larger rooms have private baths, TVs, and kitchenettes, and run 180 pesos per person. Open to all is the terrace on the roof, which has a fully equipped kitchen available to all guests, and a beautiful vista of the city. One can walk to the Jardin de la Union in three minutes. CB doesn't attract hard-core partiers, but a more sedate crowd who may enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace in the evening before turning in. For the bargain seeking traveler who wants a clean and tranquil place, CB is a good bet in GTO.

It is true that Casa Bertha has only a few great rooms. If you can get those rooms, you've found yourself an amazing deal. If not, I would go someone else.
The rooms I'm speaking of are the ones that come with kitchens. They are fairly large, comfy and cute in a super funky Mexican home stay kind of way. All the other rooms are small to tiny, with either bunk beds or a few single beds and no tv, and most don't have windows. All of the rooms, however, have access to a gorgeous rooftop terrace with views of Guanajuato and a shared kitchen/dining area.
My fiance and I stayed in both types of rooms while we were trying to find an apartment to rent in Gto. We paid about $37 for the kitchen room and about $30 for the tiny bunk bed room. The extra $7 -- a pittance, really, was definitely worth it.
In addition to the rooftop terrace, the other two main advantages of Casa Bertha were its location, just about five minutes to the center of the city but still in a fairly quiet residential area (although there is an incurably loud rooster that you will need to bring earplugs for nearby), as well as the unprecedented friendliness and hospitality of the staff at Casa Bertha. Jorge, especially, was extremely kind and helpful to us during our search for an apartment.

We found the Casa Bertha through a listing in a travel guide (Lonely Planet, I think?) and got a huge 3-bed room for the 2 of us, on the top floor next to the big communal kitchen. The windows overlook the city; it is a really breathtaking view. The property owner/manager, Jorge, was waiting for us at the bottom of the hill where the taxi dropped us and walked us up to the property. The space was sunny and airy, albeit not super nice or fancy, but well worth the price ($180 MXP or about $15 USD per person, per night.) The main attraction is the rooftop; it has one of the most beautiful views of the city I've ever seen.
There were three cons:
They do not take credit cards, which was fine for me, but may be a problem for some people.
They only have hot water in the morning until 11am. If you need to wash your face or shower after that time, you can request hot water, but later in the evening, no one is really around to ask about it. And the showers were pretty shoddy in general, but better than many other places in Latin America, so...
They have a no-loud-noise policy on the roof after 10pm, which was fine, but we were yelled at by another guest at 11:45pm for talking (not yelling) on the roof while we had a nightcap.
Overall, it was a good value and everyone in the town was hospitable and pleasant.

During our six week trip to Mexico we had two very different experiences of Casa Bertha. The first time, we booked one of their two 'apartment' rooms and had an amazing time. The room was really quite reasonable considering it was huge, had both its own kitchen and bathroom and had a panoramic view out over the beautiful city of Guanajuato.
We then set off to travel around Mexico but had to return to Guanajuato at the end of our trip, as our flight left from the nearby inernational airport.
We booked the same apartment room in advance and even called two days before our return to ensure our booking was still valid. We were assured all was well, but when we turned up (after a long bus ride nontheless) they had given our room to someone else and the aleternative room they offered us was kind of third rate (maybe fourth??)
Anyway, I wasn't in the mood for a windowless room with a bunk bed and a skody bathroom down the hall and stomped off to find somewhere better, which we did at the nearby Casa Azul.
On the upside, the owners are very friendly and nice. There is a lovely communal dining area with a great view. It's close to the centre of Guanajuato. Plenty of positives. Just don't expect them to stick to their word.
