“Not so good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2014 via mobile

This is more a hostel than a hotel.A few private rooms, but no breakfasts and only water supplied. No friendly family and room very nice but dusty. Also next to shared kitchen from where you could hear every word.A bit far from city center, but walkable.Didn't measure up to all the glowing reviews. But cheap enough.

I stayed here two nights in March 2014 and loved how close it was to the bus route, literally steps away. Also, its a walkable distance to the city center to see El Pipila, Teatro Juarez, and all the main attractions. I really wanted to write this review to say how amazingly gracious the owners were. On my last day in GTO, I ended up losing all my credit cards and had only 300 pesos to my name and still needed a ride to the airport. The female owner offered to let me keep my things at the hostel until 6pm on the day of my departure and then drove me to the airport in Leon free of charge. If it wasn't for Al son de los santos I'm not sure how I would have made it back to the US.

Mil gracias por la ayuda y cuando regreso a GTO siempre me voy a quedar con esta hostel.

Staff very helpful and quick responses on email in answering questions, setting up reservations and if you want transport from the airport.

Hostel On the corner with the traffic and across a basketball court where evening games take place, so can have some noise issues. A bit on the edge of the center, about a 15 minute walk. Last 2 blocks get quieter but safe. Cabs are about 35 pesos to the center. And easy to get since hostal is on the corner of the traffic road.

Basic rooms, the dorms have beds ever so very close to one other. Needs upkeep: cracked paint, door doesn't close shut unless you turn the lock, one faucet doesn't work, toilet paper holder is 1/2 broken so falls off. Lots of fairly basic items that can be addressed and would help. Needs TLC.

Rooms face each other/common areas, and walls are thin, so can hear people in the common areas quite easily. Kitchen is small but has everything you need, table has 4 chairs but not likely for 4 to eat in it, very small. water cooler to help yourself.

Wifi pretty good. Breakfast coffee and toast, sometimes yogurt. Terrace patio, nice up there. More space, chairs, and a BBQ. As with all water in the area, little stronger that a trickle.

Staff are nice and try to be helpful:Carla and Stephanie, But Gabriel is simply wonderful! helpful, friendly. Usually need to ask for it, but then done. As mentioned in previous reviews, staff are there from 8am to 10-11pm.

Really want to give it better rating as the staff are very kind but just needs more attention. With a handful of things overlooked, a bit of a distance to the center and for its price, I wanted more.

Wonderful taqueria across the street! Just 10 peso for tacos, but don't open until 7pm til late.

Laundry about 10 minutes walk up further from the town, wild, just not a lot of laundry places here

If going to a Spanish school, go to Escuela Falcon. Classes are an hour and you can choose the subject, and so each class is a different teacher and probably with different students ...which means you get to interact with more people for a greater experience. And simply impressed with the teachers! Very well prepared. Don't be put off by the placement exam and questions...they are doing their best to give you the right level and attention.

Town is wonderful, small walkable (have good shoes). Beautiful. With the University, I assume, brings in a fairly younger crowd and lots and lots of arts and events going on. And not completely overrun by expats and tourists, so feel like you are in Mexico. Of course you will be passing time in the Jardin and the Plazas.

This really should be call a hotel and not a hostal, the rooms are big, clean, beautifully decorated. It was nice to have a kitchen and the terrace which offers a fantastic view. The service was excellent as well. I highly recommend this place. It is a short walk to downtown and in a nice and safe neighbourhood. The girls at the reception were very nice and helpful. I would stay here again. Thank you!!!!
Gracias!!!

Room Tip: The doors of the rooms were open and I took a look at the upstairs suite, it is gorgeous, private en...

Based on the great reviews I booked the king suite ($66.60/night). I was full of hope and promise with visions of the advertised fireplace crackling in the background while I smootched my husband. Well, it wasn't really a fireplace—it was a brick facade with a hole that had an electric heater. The bathroom isn't really part of the room; it's kind of like an outhouse (attached but covered by uninsulated roof tile and thin plexiglass over the shower area.) It was 20 degrees colder in there than the rest of the room.

The room was large, but not functional. There was no place to sit and use your computer, the patio was oddly shaped with no view, the stairs up to the room were old, spiral and rickety and the towels were so stiff you could have lit a match on them. The playground next door is noisy, but becomes quiet by 8:00, but the church out back likes to set of something that can only be described as explosions. They also have a fixation on ringing their bells at the oddest time of day. I've stayed in old dwellings and understand the challenges of making them hotels, As for the noise, I'm not sure there is a such thing as a quiet hotel in Guanajuato.

If you're 19, maybe this place is fine. If you like exfoliating with your bath towel, perhaps there's no problem, if you can sleep through a sonic boom, have at it. I am thoroughly confused about the other reviews on Trip Advisor. There are a lot of people who only ever posted one review and it was of this hotel. Why, why in a lifetime of hotels, restaurants and things to do would someone take the time to tell others about this less than mediocre hotel? I can't explain it. But at this pricepoint I could have (and should have) done much better.

Room Tip: This was the best room in the hotel. The twin was REALLY small with no windows to the outside.

We spent 2 weeks in the colonial cities recently, and Guanajuato was our first stop. Al Son is a small, pretty, well looked after place to stay. Excellent location on the edge of the historic centre. We like to walk everywhere, and the town centre is about 10 minutes away. In the other direction is a quiet residential neighbourhood of La Presa, with some nice eating spots. The staff here are extremely helpful, especially Carmela at the desk, who speaks excellent English after several years in Chicago. We had the suite on the second floor, which has a large bedroom, nice tiled bathroom and private small terrace. On the same floor is a spiral staircase to the rooftop deck, and a small communal kitchen area, with tea, coffee, some condiments, etc. for the use of the residents. Apart from some early evening noise from a basketball court nearby this was a perfect arrangement for us.

Room Tip: On the first floor are single / double rooms with not much light. On the second floor is the suite w...

This is a very nice hostel in Guanajuato. You will feel the Mexican personality everywhere. The bedrooms are good and comfortable. The bath with hot water is good also. It's not situated in the historic center but just a few blocks from the beginning of it. The ratio cost benefit is very good.
