“Effortless Perfection, Old-World Charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2005

We spent several days in Guadalajara, Mexico, in early October, where we made the Villa Ganz our home base. Villa Ganz was one of the best hotels we have ever stayed at in 30+ years of business and leisure travel.

Villa Ganz is an elegant but non-fussy bed & breakfast located on a busy street in Guadalajara’s West Side (Minerva-Chapultepec area), a bustling neighborhood with many cafes, bookstores and shops.
(Although we rarely heard any street noise.)

The B&B is located in a beautifully renovated old mansion that opens up to surprisingly spacious, exquisite gardens in the back. It has about a dozen rooms of different types. We splurged for a second-floor Grand Master suite which had an unbelievably comfortable king bed (with duvet and high-thread-count linens), vaulted brick ceilings, private bath with huge soaking tub, tile floor, hammock, and balcony overlooking the gardens.

A complimentary bottle of wine awaits your arrival; there is an honor bar downstairs, and snacks and light meals available via room service. There is nightly turn-down service, as well.

The room comes with all the modern conveniences: high-speed wired and wireless Internet, air conditioning, phone and cable TV – there’s even a guest PC in the downstairs Salon, in case you don’t want to drag your laptop to Mexico.

However, our greatest pleasures were the simple things: the smell of lemons from the tree near our balcony, the hummingbirds that flew in and out of the Salon, the shelves of thoughtfully selected books in our room and in the Salon, the strains of a surprise evening performance by a nationally famous concert violinist (apparently a friend of the owners), and the twinkling lights in the garden at dusk.

The Villa Ganz is within walking distance or a short cab ride of many fine restaurants, including El Sacramonte (which we highly recommend).

We’re kicking ourselves for not taking advantage of the house’s ability to arrange a private dinner by personal chef – a must for our next visit.

The best thing about our Villa Ganz experience was the people.

Manager Cecilia Blanquel and a team of enthusiastic, bi-lingual and energetic young people provide Five-Star service. They couldn’t do enough for us, whether it was making dinner reservations, personally escorting us to a cab and giving directions to the driver, providing suggestions on sights to see, or arranging private-car pickup and delivery at the airport. The able front-office team is assisted by a warm and wonderful staff of housekeepers, cooks and helpers, who keep the place spotless.

There is a wonderful continental breakfast (example: papaya the size of pineapples); additional items are available for order depending on how hungry you are. You can eat in your room, in the garden, or in the sunny breakfast room overlooking the garden.

The whole Villa Ganz experience is like staying in an exclusive private home where you are the only guest.

We loved staying at the Villa Ganz this January 2005, and felt very comfortable there. The gardens are lovely, and in the evening they had a huge fire roaring in the outdoor fireplace. Service was above par, and better yet, they spoke English and had a lap top available for internet access.

This hotel is one of the best I have ever visited. The service in this place is incredible. Whatever you need, when ever, they are right there to take care of you. Guadalajara is a very big, noisy city, but the minute you walk into this hotel, serenity reigns. The decor is wonderful. Lots of antiques, great art, very, very comfortable beds. I cannot say enough about this hotel. You will not be disappointed!
