Interior finishings are breathtaking. I attended the 12 October Celebration of th Virgin and it was outstanding. Native dancers around the plaza in full regalia and the faithful and their pilgrimages give meaning to what it is all about at this basilica.
It was just OK. The old architecture and stonework are interesting to see in this Jesuit church. The Virgin of Zapopan doll is kept here during the non-harvest months, and then millions of people walk with it to return it here from the countryside in mid-October, so the story is interesting, at least.
Zapopan is really a waste of time, unless you are a cheap beer drunkard and love music composed of 4 notes and less than 3 words, of course you can always ask for forgiveness at the conveniently located basilica, amen.
Reminds me of Barcelona! The walking street from there is comprised of enchanting shops and eating places.
This basilica houses one of the most beloved Mexican virgins for half of the year. (The other half, she is in the Guad. cathedral). Most interesting, to me, is the interesting Huichol musem at its side.
