“Oblatos Canyon”

The Barrancas are sometimes a pain to drive through but the scenery can be spectacular...especially if you can find the waterfalls...sometimes hard to spot.

“Excellent Scenery and fun hike- If you follow certain precautions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2010

I lived in Guadalajara for six years and went frequently to "la Barranca." There are actually two popular entry points to see the Barranca - there is the "Barranca de Oblatos" and the "Barranca de Huentitan". Both have beautifully scenic views that are especially spectacular during rainy season. There are, however, some important things to keep in mind:

1) the Barranca is bustling with people on weekend mornings. Many go there for a brisk walk. It's great exercise but the path is rocky. I would NOT recommend at all for anyone that is out of shape or has difficulty walking for any other reason.

2) this is not in the best part of town. I have been there many times alone as a young "gringa" and never felt at risk, but even locals don't recommend coming here during the middle of the day. Make it down on a weekend morning or skip it.

3) I would not drive here - take a taxi. Parking isn't great and it's not easy to know where to stop. The entry can seem a bit hidden if you don't know what to look for.

4) If you are really up for a steep hike, ask the taxi driver to take you the "La Barranca de Huentitan" (Again, only on a weekend morning) This is where all of the serious exercisers come. It's a beautiful and steep rocky downhill hike. My absolute favorite place to work out EVER - not just in Guadalajara. It's just a few miles away from Oblatos and so much more exciting, in my opinion.
