“Stylish, Discreet, Complete”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

I imagine you're thinking... I don't know, should we book here? Yes! You should!

We stayed here four nights in November 2012, and had a terrific visit. We chose to have the hotel pick us up at the airport, and driver Carlos gave us a fascinating tour as we made our way across town. Fernando met us on arrival with drinks and an welcome orientation for our stay. He suggested many possible activities; we chose the gay horseback tour for one day and the zip line another. Both were well worth it and a lot of fun. You will read a lot of descriptions of this impressive property on trip advisor. I'd just add that there are a *lot* of stairs, since the hotel is built into a steep hillside, and I imagine some travelers would want to know that beforehand. But because of these stairs you are treated to new and surprising views and architectural details at every turn.

We dined at Taste several times, for breakfast and dinner. Prepare to be surprised. They have very fine chef and staff. Eating this delicious food while enjoying the soaring views of Old Vallarta is an experience not to be missed.

Casa Cupula's gym is extremely well-equipped for a hotel gym. Whoever put it together knew what you need for a good workout.

We stayed in room 403. Spacious, stylish, kind of Zen with polished concrete walls. Our companions stayed in 303, with more traditional furnishings and a covered balcony. Both were beautiful, but 403 made us feel like rock stars.

I've read a few reviewers were put off by the tiny cobblestone street that leads up the hill. And the fact that you have to get up and down the hill to get to the beach. We used cabs: easy, stress-free, and cheap. As for the unimpressive entrance, we thought it made the surprise at the end even more special. If I was some celebrity looking for anonymity and pampering -and I'm not! - Casa Cupula would be the perfect place.

We wished the WiFi was more consistent, and did mention it. But do not let that prevent you from staying here. You will leave refreshed and feeling you have made good friends in Puerto Vallarta.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views, lower floors have fewer steps. I liked the views.

“Best (gay) boutique in PV”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

Stunning hotel and perfectly located for the gay beach (5-10 mins down the hill). Only 40-50 pesos in a taxi back from most of the shops or bars and restaurants nearby. Lovely rooms, spacious and well equipped. We had a very warm welcome from Don, the owner, and the whole team were friendly and helpful.

“Heaven on earth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012 via mobile

We thought about a bad start for our vacation because our flight was late and we missed the next to PV. But then we arrived at Casa Cupula...

They started with a Tour to the hotel, lot of helpfully informations and a very warm welcome.
First time of our two weeks there we used the queens (the only that was offered by our travel agent). It's a lovely room with a fantastic view to the Banderas Bay from the terrace. But take care for the evil mosquitos after sunset while you're sitting there. The "off" - spray you can buy there helps ;-)

Later we upgraded to the penthouse suite. Unbelievable! Sitting in the rooftop pool under the stars with my husband in one arm and a cocktail in the other one... Priceless.
There is nothing you'll miss. Great bathroom with a doubleshower, full functionality kitchen, washer and dryer, whirlpool, a nice and modern designed living room, a very comfortable bed, music every where you want and so on...
At the rooftop a pool, sundeck, barbecue corner, etc...

That's all very nice but the really priceless at Casa Cupula is: the staff (incl. the boss Don).
It doesn't matter if I talk about the staff of the hotel or thats from the Taste Restaurant.
They're all very courteous and friendly, solves problems you don't know there's one and yes, they're more than staff. They are like family and friends.

It's a long journey from Germany to PV but, I think it was the third day staying there, we decided to come back next year. If you think about staying at Casa Cupula, just do it. You'll be also enthusiastic like us.

PS: Sorry for my broken english. If you find some grammatical mistakes, it's yours ;-)

“King of the Hill in PV”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

Mexico’s Pacific Coast is a beautiful place to visit for all the right reasons. Incredible scenery, clean water teaming with colorful ocean life, broad beaches, incredible choices of restaurants for all tastes and budgets. And with the peso declining to about 14 to the dollar right now, it is an amazing bargain too.

Puerto Vallarta is the epicenter for the best of of old and new Mexico. And no place is better to enjoy PV from than Casa Cupula.

Located on a hillside overlooking the oldest parts of Puerto Vallarta, Casa Cupula started out as a 4 room hotel and grown into a 22 room luxury resort. Each room has a different theme and color scheme – no cookie cutter, tacky Mexican décor here. There is also a first rate restaurant, Taste, which earned best new restaurant for 2011 – and that says a lot in city where good to great restaurants are fairly common. There is a beautiful terrace to enjoy a meal and the vista or for the equivalent of $3, room service. You will also find a well-equipped gym that is available to locals who mostly live in the surrounding high rises near Casa Cupula or other tourists who were not lucky enough to get a room at Casa Cupula

The hotel is meticulously clean almost to the point of fanatical. I can’t keep dirt out of my own home but somehow the staff is able to keep every floor free of sand in a beach town.

The rooms vary in size based on price. Even the smallest rooms are bigger than most luxury US hotels. Top of the line bath accessories, high quality mattresses, high thread count sheets, large closet areas, flat screen TVs, DVD players, and powerful showers are in every room. All rooms also have an outdoor terrace with lounge chairs and a table that can seat at least 4 people. The room themes vary from traditional Mexican to chic NY or LA style. No losers in the bunch!

If the rooms are the hotel are fantastic, the Suites are to die for. While you can accommodate up to 10 people in the largest (which features its own private pool), you can find Suites perfect for a romantic two – with large decks, creative showers and baths, kitchens, and more. During my recent stay, I had a top floor room (about 700 sq. ft) with a very large bath and two person shower which adjoined a small roof top pool with lounge chairs and even had a large table plus a sound system (plug in your iPod if you want). Prices started about $99 a night and up depending on the time of year. During the high season you will find the rates closer to $200 a night. Yes there are cheaper places in PV but you get what you pay for. Casa Cupula is worth the extra money.

The staff at Casa Cupula, including the wait staff and reception, are amazing. I’ve never seen a place where everyone truly enjoys their jobs. While they work for tips and deserve every penny, gay or straight, they are the happiest bunch of people you could ever meet. Don, the owner, was always out and about. While he has owned the Casa for a number of years, he seems to treat each group of tourists like they are his first and most precious guests. He was always checking to see how we were enjoying our stay and even invited us to dine with him and his partner one evening. I will review the restaurant next in a separate entry but suffice to say, the chef does Casa Cupula proud with his nouvelle Mexican cuisine.

All in all, a 5 star resort in a place resplendent with great options – but clearly king of the hill.

Room Tip: No bad rooms in the bunch BUT #4 is on the top floor and features amazing sunsets everynight. If you...

“Boutique Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

Stayed at Casa Cupula for ten days recently. The service is truly excellent from the manager, Tina to the concierge, Fernando and to all of the waiters in the hotel restaurant, Taste. A special shout out to Chino who was the pool bartender. It was also a pleasure to meet and spend some time with Don the owner.

We stayed in room 201 which has a good view of the water (unfortunately a newly constructed condominium building blocks about half of the view) and a great terrace, shower and mirror. It is just above the restaurant Taste so you hear the conversation once dinner begins, not a sound we found bothersome.

The hotel does have to get the wi fi straightened out as we had numerous problems; although the staff did their best to assist.

As far as overall rating we put it down as very good (as opposed to excellent) as we think it is a little expensive, especially for the rooms, breakfasts, drinks and tours. The hotel provides a 50 peso voucher for breakfast but it is not sufficient to cover even a small continental breakfast. If money is no object and you do not mind a 10 minute walk to the beach this is the place to stay.

It was our first time to Puerto Vallarta and we really enjoyed the experience. Beach is great, people are friendly, and food is very good. In addition, it is the most gay friendly place I have been, other than perhaps Provincetown and Key West.

We would in particular suggest Los Veranos Capopy Zip line tours, which you might consider booking through Diana tours. It was a hoot, once you get over initial jitters. The staff was excellent and lots of fun. Also the parasailing from the beach in front of Blue Chairs was reasonably priced and lots of fun, a piece of cake after the zip line tour.

Also if you want really great bar food and a very lively atmosphere check out Hot Fridas on Los Altos. Owner Chris and his dj partner and staff are very welcoming. A great place for a quick dinner, good drink, wild videos, and all in all a great time. I think we went four times in a 10 day stay.

Tip for a romantic dinner is La Palapa on the beach. Waiters are very professional, the restaurant is beautifully appointed and there is a very romantic view of the beach and sunset. For a fun ending to the evening check out any of the flaming coffee drinks. It is worth the show from the waiters.

Room Tip: Ask about the views as this is a real plus in the better rooms. There are cheaper rooms on the pool...

Thank you for your kind words! The guest is absolutely right, our new season's review of our new WiFi system was plagued by a finicky server that wouldn't keep running for more than a couple of hours without a reboot. It has been replaced, and as our throughput has more than doubled since last year and we have installed new WiFi towers and load balancers we think everyone's experience will be better than last year for free, with a new premium option for even faster service. Thanks for your patience with opening week jitters!
