“Memorable experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2014

Having stayed at Grand Mayan on our previous visits to Mexico, the kids were not too impressed when they got to this resort because of a singular pool instead of acres of water, but by the end of the trip, we all felt that this was one of our more memorable trips.

Perfect location. Driving into town took 5 minutes. Local bus would have taken maybe 10. Driving south to the Zoo as well as the Botanical Garden took 10 and 20 minutes respectively.

Right on the water, and as many others have mentioned, an awesome Ocean view with great sunsets from every room on or above the 4th floor. Major bonus was that EVERY morning at about 8:00 AM, a family of dolphins came to feed not too far from the private lagoon of the hotel. And the private beach and lagoon provided for wonderful experiences for the whole family. The catering at the pool and the beach was good (reasonably good food and excellent service).

The 1-bedroom apartment was reasonably big, and the kitchen was great. And the beds were quite comfortable. WiFi worked, but they limit the number of active devices to 3 per room.

The place would earn 5 stars if they would upgrade the rooms with newer mirrors and other amenities.

Room Tip: Fourth floor or higher pretty much guarantees great views. Lower floors will only have a good view...

I enjoyed staying at this beautiful hotel on the cliff side of Puerto Vallarta. It's a little bit south of the city, about a ten minute cab drive. The view is amazing and all rooms come with a balcony over looking the west side, which means you can watch the sunset every night! My one complaint is the hotel restaurant. The food is bland and quite frankly a little disagreeable. It's not expensive but honestly I would rather take my money elsewhere rather than buy dinner there. But that's an easy problem solve :) Otherwise the staff is great and the room was fine (nothing extravagant by any means). The hotel is not all-inclusive by any means. You would definitely want to book other activities in the city or through a tour agency. We used Vallarta Adventures and I highly recommend it!!

Room Tip: They all are waterfront so it doesn't matter! A higher room has a better view though.

I have stayed here more than once, and return because EVERY room has a lovely view, kitchenette, and the staff is more than accommodating. For the price, this is a great bargain. The rooms are not huge but who spends time in their room? The beach is VERY nice albeit small, the pools are fine. One is reserved more for volleyball and games and is in the shade most of the day, the other is surrounded by loungers which are VERY hard to get. You quickly learn to play the game of getting up at 7 and putting some books on a couple of them. The staff is always on the mark, some have worked here for many many years. NOW. I will tell you what I saw this time that was terribly disturbing. This resort has OLD timeshares, some people have been coming here for 20 or more years, the same week every year. They all know each other and the staff VERY well. Unfortunately, the NON-regulars are treated rather shabbily in the restaurant and bar areas. I was quite frankly, appalled at the shocking LACK of service during happy hours and dinner. We completely left the resort in the evenings. In prior years, we were treated well and equally by all of the staff. I recognize these people KNOW the employees but SEVERAL people that I met while there complained of this. Next, if you think you are going to get any kind of quality internet access, think again. The lobby stunk for internet, my room on the 10th floor was also lacking in it and the pool area was just a plain old JOKE. So do NOT believe any advertising about wi-fi. It does NOT exist. I found several little internet cafes in the Zona Romantica that had nice service however. Finally, as for location; convenient $5 taxi rides to the Zona Romantica and a really inexpensive bus ride to Mismaloya. Location, location, location. That is why I give this resort 4 stars.

Room Tip: 6th floor is ground level, below that is quieter.

Dear Stacey thank you very much for taking the time to comment about your recent stay at our Costa Sur.
We have taken note of your observations about the service in the restaurant and pool area, which are very important for us, and would like to assure you that we will be taking the necessary corrective actions to avoid these mishappenings.
Regarding the Internet service, I would like to confirm that we are, right at this moment, setting up a whole new system that will allow for real WiFi service throughout all the public areas, including the beach, as well as in the rooms and we plan to put it into function in the next two weeks.
Once again thank you very much and we hope you will give us the opportunity of hosting you in the future and show you that your comments are taken very seriously.
Cordially.

PS What an awesome sunset shot. Congratulations!

Bad! We booked a trip at Costa Sur after reading above average reviews, inaccurate! Like a $40 hotel I stayed in on layover in Mazatlan. Tiny pool and beach for the resort size. Poor 70s style room, gut it! Food was good. We ate the fees and booked somewhere else.

Dear Guest thank you for taking the time to comment about your recent stay at our Costa Sur.
We are very sorry we were not able to satisfy your expectations and want to assure you that we have taken note of your observations which are very important to us.
Part of what makes our style is the "old" Mexican feel to it, updated with modern amenities such as comfortable beds, large screen televisions and an ongoing preventive maintenance program, as well as the ocean front views from all the rooms, but we appreciate the fact that we may not please everybody's taste.
Once again thank you and we hope you will give us another chance at trying to get your confidence back.
Regards.

Have been coming here for 33 years and came almost every year for years but as kids grew we traded for other places. We are sooooo glad we came back! While the place does show a little wear and older appliances everything worked well and very very clean. But I have to say it does feel like coming home! The staff ( some we even knew from 17 years ago!) are a huge part it making it feel like home! A special shout out to Flavio..Manuel...Enriki..Moses ...and each and every one of the staff that gave us such great service every day.the food was excellent as well as the prices and I can't overlook the 2 for 1 happy hour! The beach / lagoon is a great addition as before the rock wall it was too dangerous to swim in and really no beach. If you visit here I hope you feel at home too!

Room Tip: The 1 bedrooms are only slightly more expensive and you get twice the space as the studios

Enjoyed every minutes of this placed. Stayed in the south building and the views were spectacular!. The rooms clean and plentiful! It very peaceful and quiet; just what we needed a relaxing vacation. close to downtown, but far enough to get away from all the noise. restaurant and bar on site was GREAT! The food (the cook) was great. We ended up eating there 75 percent of the time because of the service and quality of the food. Customer service was a 10/10. The lagoon was kid friendly and safe with much fish life. I even canceled one of my Dive trips because the lagoon was fun to explore with my son. This was definitely a hidden gem! I plan to return in may again!

Room Tip: south building wifi slower that north building. south build has bigger rooms. PLAN TO EAT THERE...

I can not say enough good things about my first stay at Costa Sur. If you want high end luxury, this is not the place (hardly anywhere in PV is for that matter). But if you want clean, affordable, great location (bus is 5 minutes to town), cozy with both a beach and pool this is the spot. Excellent service the entire time from check-in to dining, from beach/pool service and maid service. Everything was perfect! I found the food to be quite good! And the Happy hour is every day 2x1 drinks at 5pm. I really liked that the resort had both beach and pool lounging so you could go back and forth between the two. The activities were also a fun touch ~ With bingo, blackjack, darts, water volleyball and more. You could Kayak, snorkel and pattle board down on the water too. I have to say thank you to my wonderful servers ~ Manual, Flavio, Clemente... you guys were the BEST! I can not wait to go back!

Room Tip: All the rooms have ocean views. I was in 815 (1 bedroom) and loved it.
