This place is all about setting your expectations. First the Good: At $100 per nite for a big 1 bedroom unit with a kitchen, I think it's a helluva deal. The staff was friendly and nice, the bartenders were good (good Margies), the 2 pools were great. Not HUGE like some resorts but clean and nice. The main pool is un-heated but it's perfect if you ask me, plenty warm. The other pool is a heated pool that was perfect the first 2 days we got there but then it seemed like someone turned up the heat because it got way too hot (like a giant hot tub). The beach is rocky (don't expect soft white sand) but it's nice and private and the water is warm. The man made rock lagoon is nice if you have little ones (like me). The snorkeling was disappointing. Then again, we've been to Bora Bora, Belize, Fiji, Thailand, St. Lucia and Hawaii so maybe it's a bit of an unfair comparison. If you go OUTside the reef it's OK. Inside the reef there's TONS of seaweed and the visibility is crap. Oh well, my wife and 3 year old spent 99% of our time in the pool anyway swimming and drinking margies. Now the Bad: the entire place has that "3rd world mildew" smell that I'm pretty sure is from the air conditioning. Also, there are no "non-smoking" rooms. Ours didn't exactly kill us with the smoke smell but you could tell it had been smoked in. The rooms are clean but old. A little run down. They are big and in the pics they look cool but when you get there they are just.....well...old. But again, they are clean. The sofa/hideabed SUCKS!! It's literally the worst hideabed I've ever layed on. We all slept in one bed so it didn't matter but if you are counting on that, be prepared. Also, there are lots of beetles/bugs. I love that sort of thing (makes me feel like I'm in the jungle) but if you have a problem with beetles & bugs, be forwarned. A few other notes: the place is about a 10 minute cab ride to PV so we went shopping there a couple times. OVERALL: we stayed there 4 days and had a blast. We pretty much spent all day in the pool. The view from our room was great and the food/drinks were good. I'd say if money is no object, there are other places you may want to look at but if you are on a budget, this place is a great value. Again, just go in with the right expectations - don't expect the fairmont or one of those places that has 10 pools with waterfalls & fountains and 10 restruants.

“a bad week”

Well I've stayed at PDS 6 times in my life as my parents have owned there for 30 years. This week was the worst trip by far. I had forgotten how hard the beds are... One night my wife and I put the kids in the Queen and she and I slept on the pull out couch. That mattress is about 3 inches thick and at least as comfortable. Upon arrival our 6 and 8 year olds wanted nothing more than to go swimming in the ocean. If you've seen pictures of their makeshift lagoon it can be nice. During this week it was disgusting!!! We were told they were experiencing a red tide, that some plants had come loose and were making al the foam that engulfed the entire lagoon. Quality of staff is hit or miss, some people were engaging, friendly and nice while others were rude and amazingly slow... We had dinner in Cascada "their only restaurant" 3 nights two of the worst meals of my life and my wife spent the third night throwing up!!! Lastly I'll state checkout was a nightmare! I spent 45 minutes as we were trying to leave going over our bill and ultimately I needed to explain the discrepancy to 4 different people before they were able to fix the problem... We were unlucky with weather 3 straight days of rain, but we met some great people with kids our kids age and for that reason the trip wasn't a total bust, but in that much rain the highlight of each day was BINGO... I'd try somewhere else.

We are owners of PDS and have always enjoyed our stay, of course having a 2 bdrm corner suite with a view of the pool and the coast line to the north might have something to do with it. Rooms are always clean and yes the beds are somewhat firm, I survive and the staff is friendly and will always go out of the way for friendly people. Have traveled throughout Mexico and except the fact that it's not Beverly HIlls. For the amount of money spent it's well worth it. Don't be in a hurry, stay calm and enjoy their lifestyle. $5 cab ride or .50 cent bus ride into town is great . Food is really above average with breakfst being my favorite. If you're looking for peace and quite and a view second to none without thousands of people around, this is the place, enjoy. For the time share pitch tell them you work for the airlines or just say no and keep walking, they'll leave you alone.

“Friendly Resort”

Playa del Sol Costa Sur

Well as a few of you, after reading the reviews about this resort i was skeptical about our stay. But after arriving and getting such friendly attention from the staff, I admit my feelings were wrong about the resort. Yes it does need some renovations, which i hear they are going to do. but the service made up for it. Our room was on the 13th fl which we had a wonderful view. The room was a little shabby but very clean and our housekeeper was great!

We actually stayed another week. so for three weeks we were able to stay in our same room, I had numerous massages, and Victor was so attentive to our drinking needs LOL!!

We had some wonderful dinners in town. We had fresh homemade guacomole at the resort for lunch and we had wonderful weather...

Now we are home to 50 degree dreary rainy weather and ready to go back!

As poeple said no it is not a 5 star resort, but I enjoyed our stay just the same!

“Hard as Rocks”

Playa del Sol Costa Sur

If you enjoy staying at an early 1980s Motel 8 off a noisy interstate in the US then you will feel right a home here. The hotel staff first off lied about the hotel being renovated, it is NOT. Next the hotel room smelled moldy and was generally very shabby. The bed was the worst of all and I'm still sore from sleeping on it., hard as a rock. I even tried sleeping on their smelly sofa but that was just too much to stand. The bathroom had chipped paint and the toilet didn't work. Oh, and the door to the room looked like it was previously broken into, and a very poor fix-it job by this so called hotel. The only saving grace for the hotel was the view and the pool. The food and drinks by the pool were very good but overpriced for Mexico. If you want a nice hotel stay at a non-timeshare resort. Also, make sure it is a name brand or ask some who has previously stayed there. I still enjoy Mexico but it will not be at this hotel in the future.
