As an experienced traveler and one that has the ability through work to experience many types of hotels, I can confidently say that I would not recommend this hotel- at least not until they decide to join the rest of the hotels in the 21st century. Our stay was for 7/4-7 '08. I had spent weeks reading good and bad reviews prior to my trip and was quite nervous to keep my reservation at the Dreams. I wish I had changed it. Upon arrival you can tell that its not the polished, high style type hotel, but a more no frills island type. That may be fine for some- but not for the price the Dreams charges.
Sidebar: The website is VERY misleading. There is no way this resort looks like that.
Rooms: At first glance, in our optimistic mindset- we WERE on vacation after all- we were comfortable with our room. As our day progressed however- our opinion changed- drastically. The AC did not work effectively. All of our papers and clothes were wet all the time as the AC could not keep up with the incredible humidity. The floor was dirty, as if it had not been cleaned in weeks. We had to use flip flops the whole time. The bathroom though at first glance clean- upon further use- had other people's hair everywhere. Not totally unbearable- we just had to keep reminding ourselves we were on vacation. For the next day or so, we heard electric saws and hammering in the nearby rooms. Not a big deal as we weren't in the room for long and ok as long as they stopped at a reasonable hour-which they did. However, on our last night we entered our room to find a very strong smell of paint thinner, so much so that a haze started to develop in our room. Upon a call to the front desk someone was sent up with a spray can of something- which was NOT going to do the trick. We were told someone would come to fix it- and thankfully after whatever they did- we were able to sleep in the room. The beds were somewhat hard- but I'm a very picky sleeper and was very comfortable in the bed.
Entertainment: The most boring hotel I have ever stayed at. Even honeymooners would be hard pressed to find excitement here. The staff tries hard- but there is no direction and most definitely no clue as to what constitutes entertainment. There is nothing to do for kids, absolutey nothing for teens and the adults all wandered around aimlessly at night. There is no music to liven up the place, there's no lounge for dancing, nothing to do but dinner, more wandering and just sitting around. It didn't help that it rained (torrential downpours) every night- and so trips to town for clubs was somewhat out of the question. So we resigned ourselves to doing what I started to call "the bored couple stroll" up and down the outer corridor.
Staff: They work very hard- and are the most redeeming thing about this hotel. Except for the entertainment gentlemen who were young and occasionally disrespectful to the guests- and clueless as to how to entertain. They offered a Casino night- for EVERYONE- and little boy of about 4 or 5 years old- won a bottle of tequila- and he was allowed to actually walk around playing with a huge bottle of Tequila. Hello? but....thats how bored everyone was.
Food: Very small portions- more gourmet looking than satisfying or tasty. I had read that this was the best hotel for food- wow- what does that say for the other hotels? The food was mediocre though well presented.
Pools: were adequate though as the rest of the place are in DIRE need of renovations. We stayed in the old tower- which was fine- but was old and old fashioned. We were told that there would be some renovations.....to the NEW tower! hello???? OLD tower....help....
Service was very good- especially at the lobby bar-and pool. And yes, the Dreams beach is very nice, kept clean by workers up at the crack of dawn.
We spent 3 nights at the Dreams and were scheduled to then go to Nuevo Vallarta to the Vallarta Palace- WOW- what a difference and we wished we had gone there to begin with and just taxi it back and forth to PV. I'd recommend the Vallarta Palace with my eyes closed. I read many reviews about the Dreams, and I would say that I mostly agree with the bad ones than the good. Although, it could be a very nice hotel should they decide to spend some money and bring in some new and fresh ideas.
