“Dreams..... a disappointment”

Dreams Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa

As an experienced traveler and one that has the ability through work to experience many types of hotels, I can confidently say that I would not recommend this hotel- at least not until they decide to join the rest of the hotels in the 21st century. Our stay was for 7/4-7 '08. I had spent weeks reading good and bad reviews prior to my trip and was quite nervous to keep my reservation at the Dreams. I wish I had changed it. Upon arrival you can tell that its not the polished, high style type hotel, but a more no frills island type. That may be fine for some- but not for the price the Dreams charges.
Sidebar: The website is VERY misleading. There is no way this resort looks like that.
Rooms: At first glance, in our optimistic mindset- we WERE on vacation after all- we were comfortable with our room. As our day progressed however- our opinion changed- drastically. The AC did not work effectively. All of our papers and clothes were wet all the time as the AC could not keep up with the incredible humidity. The floor was dirty, as if it had not been cleaned in weeks. We had to use flip flops the whole time. The bathroom though at first glance clean- upon further use- had other people's hair everywhere. Not totally unbearable- we just had to keep reminding ourselves we were on vacation. For the next day or so, we heard electric saws and hammering in the nearby rooms. Not a big deal as we weren't in the room for long and ok as long as they stopped at a reasonable hour-which they did. However, on our last night we entered our room to find a very strong smell of paint thinner, so much so that a haze started to develop in our room. Upon a call to the front desk someone was sent up with a spray can of something- which was NOT going to do the trick. We were told someone would come to fix it- and thankfully after whatever they did- we were able to sleep in the room. The beds were somewhat hard- but I'm a very picky sleeper and was very comfortable in the bed.
Entertainment: The most boring hotel I have ever stayed at. Even honeymooners would be hard pressed to find excitement here. The staff tries hard- but there is no direction and most definitely no clue as to what constitutes entertainment. There is nothing to do for kids, absolutey nothing for teens and the adults all wandered around aimlessly at night. There is no music to liven up the place, there's no lounge for dancing, nothing to do but dinner, more wandering and just sitting around. It didn't help that it rained (torrential downpours) every night- and so trips to town for clubs was somewhat out of the question. So we resigned ourselves to doing what I started to call "the bored couple stroll" up and down the outer corridor.
Staff: They work very hard- and are the most redeeming thing about this hotel. Except for the entertainment gentlemen who were young and occasionally disrespectful to the guests- and clueless as to how to entertain. They offered a Casino night- for EVERYONE- and little boy of about 4 or 5 years old- won a bottle of tequila- and he was allowed to actually walk around playing with a huge bottle of Tequila. Hello? but....thats how bored everyone was.
Food: Very small portions- more gourmet looking than satisfying or tasty. I had read that this was the best hotel for food- wow- what does that say for the other hotels? The food was mediocre though well presented.
Pools: were adequate though as the rest of the place are in DIRE need of renovations. We stayed in the old tower- which was fine- but was old and old fashioned. We were told that there would be some renovations.....to the NEW tower! hello???? OLD tower....help....
Service was very good- especially at the lobby bar-and pool. And yes, the Dreams beach is very nice, kept clean by workers up at the crack of dawn.
We spent 3 nights at the Dreams and were scheduled to then go to Nuevo Vallarta to the Vallarta Palace- WOW- what a difference and we wished we had gone there to begin with and just taxi it back and forth to PV. I'd recommend the Vallarta Palace with my eyes closed. I read many reviews about the Dreams, and I would say that I mostly agree with the bad ones than the good. Although, it could be a very nice hotel should they decide to spend some money and bring in some new and fresh ideas.

Our family of three stayed at Dreams PV for 6 nights, June 29 - July 5th. We arrived expecting cool towels and drinks, but the only welcome we received was that our room was not ready. We should have something to eat , then check on our room. After a light snack at the World Cafe, we were taken to our room on the 19th floor of the new tower. We had booked a Jr.Club Suite with a Jacuzzi, 1 king and a roll away for our son. When we entered the room, we found it to be hot and musty. The room had two full beds instead of the king and the furniture was old and worn. Although the room was made up, it did not feel clean. The view from the room was just beautiful.

After a couple of hours we realized that the air was not working.
We called the front desk and asked for the repairman. When he came to the room, all he did was adjust the vents. It was obvious that he did not know what he was doing. My husband returned to the front desk and requested a different room with air condition that worked. He was told that the hotel had a full house and there were no rooms available. After a very heated discussion with the hotel manger we were shown 4 more rooms in our catagory. I do not like for people to lie to me.

After moving down to the 18th floor the room was a little cooler. There seems to be a problem with the AC in the entire tower. We could not enjoy the beautiful view because we had to keep the curtains pulled to conserve the AC.

The beds were not new as others have mentioned. They are extremely hard. We even had the extra pad on ours.

Maid service was fair. The floors always felt dirty and if you looked at your bare feet they were dirty. I just wore slippers. We did not receive a nightly turndown service the entire trip.

I realize that we were there during low rainy season, but the service should be the same. The new tower lobby was never staffed.

The beach is very beautiful. It is kept clean and there are ample beach chairs. The beach service is poor. We were only waited on 1 day while people from cruise ships were visiting. I inquired about the beach bar b que for lunch and was advised that it was closed during rainy season. Funny I did not read anything about this.

The pools were croweded and small.

The food at all the resturants and room service were very good. Service was also good. We were told that we would have a 45 minute wait at the Seaside Grill twice, but were seated within 15 minutes. The only resturant we did not dine was the Adult only.

We had 2 theme nights while we were there. The Mexican Fiesta and the 4th of July celebration. The Mexican Fiesta is great. The food and the show are outstanding. The staff had planned an elaborate party for the 4th around the main pool. After setting up tables, stages and buffets, it came a downpour and all had to be moved inside. I felt so sorry for the staff that had worked so hard.

Having stayed at Dreams Cancum, we were disappointed with the PV resort. Overall we had a great vacation. You just have to have a positive attitude.

Dreams needs to be remodeled. Guest should receive the same service low or high season. When we return to PV, we will check other resorts.

Stayed in June 08 for 2 weeks, after an illness. Just the place to unwind and enjoy the beautiful beach and location. Waiting staff , room service, maids, in fact all nice, always smiling and helpful.
Went on two boat trips which were fabulous value for money and very entertaining. \all services are great and the food is excellent (put on 12lbs in 2 weeks) Could not resist it! Now back in unpredictable English weather, but won't be long before myself and other family members return. Thankyou Dreams!

I just returned yesterday from a five day stay at Dreams on a girl trip. We travel every summer together and found Dreams to be the most beautiful place we've been! The resort never seemed overcrowded, there were always beach chairs and friendly wait staff by the ocean. The restaurants were fabulous! Our favorite was Portofino (favorite waiters--Guillermo & Sergio). We loved the Italian Caprese salad (fresh mozzarella, avocado, and tomato) and the desserts! The main courses were great as well here. One of the girls traveling with us liked that we didn't have to make a reservation like at the other all-inclusive she stayed at in Riviera Maya and we weren't limited to just a night or two at the restaurants and forced to eat at the buffet the other nights...you could go to any restaurants as frequently as you like! Our room was in the newer tower and we found it superb with an equally enjoyable view. We went in to town twice and enjoyed each part we visited. When we were in the flea market area, shop owners always wanted us to come inside their shops, but this is their livelihood, so it was understood. We actually found prices a little higher than we expected (the jewelry stores charged by the ounce and they weren't interested in bargaining for a lower price like the little shop owners). We booked a day trip through Vallarta Adventures to Las Caletas. It was great! Two of the girls had massages while there and they said that it was the best massage they had ever had (and one has them all the time!) Lunch was included as well as snorkeling, kayaking, a nature hike (the massage was extra $...but only $50). It was a fun day with guides that loved their jobs! We had a little mishap with the sea lion experience (they didn't tell us when it was happening, so we missed it and they had to refund that part of the trip). Overall, we were extremely pleased with Dreams! I would recommended visiting Puerto Vallarta to anyone (LUSH vegetation and beautiful mountains, ocean, and sunset!) and would stay at Dreams again.

“After a slightly rocky start..Dreams was a dream...............”

Dreams Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa

Jul 7, 2008

We were looking for recovery time after a death in the family and found many good reviews of this resort. We were taking our 24 yr old son and his fiancee and our 21 yr old son and his girlfriend so good food and lots of activities were a necessity. We read that we would be greeted with champagne and cold wet towels. That didn't happen but maybe that's only for tour groups. We booked a jacuzzi room with a king size bed in the club tower for ourselves so we would have at least one bigger room to gather in, in case inclement weather drove us all inside. We arrived about 5 p.m. to find they wouldn't have one available for at least an hour (I thought checkout time was early afternoon?). We could wait or we could have a room with 2 queens for the night and move in the morning. We were hot and tired so, although we were not looking forward to having to move the next day, we took the 2 queens. I had booked all three rooms at the same time but our oldest was told they did not have a reservation for him. It took a half hour and a look at our reservations from Travelocity to sort out. I had booked it in his fiancee's name, "de Boer", and they were looking for "Boer". Finally......problem solved.

HOTEL

We arrived in our 20th floor room (which is really the 12th floor - what's with the numbering system?) to a view that took our breath away. So much so that when we were told our room with the king size bed was on the 6th floor, we chose to stay with the 2 queens.

The boys were on the 3rd and 5th floors in the older tower. It's quite a walk from one tower to the other but we found that walk to be one of the most enjoyable times of the day. The two towers are strictly rooms and all the amenities are spread around the hotel in wonderfully landscaped and well maintained grounds. You can choose to take the covered walkways that meander past the spa, the front desk and the parking lot and enjoy all the beautiful gardens along the way, or you can take the beach side brick paths that wind past several of the restaurants and pools and over small foot bridges, again lined with beautiful gardens of flowers and palms; there were hummingbirds everywhere! The industrious staff were knee deep in pruning and maintaining and almost every single person greets you as you walk. The staff were all quiet, polite and eager to assist when asked. This is obviously an older hotel as the furniture and buildings are definitely showing their age. But that certainly does not detract from the hotels charm.

RESTAURANTS

We had read that the restaurants were very good but that was by far an understatement. Five restaurants and every single one was fantastic. The World Cafe has a buffet breakfast that has every thing imaginable. The omelet bar had all the possibilites available and even some I never would have thought of, or would cook your eggs to order. The poor girls behind that grill must have been dying from the heat in their white jackets but they always had a smile for us.

There was every kind of fruit, breads and buns, pancakes, french toast, 2 or 3 kinds of potatoes, bacon, ham, different kinds of sausage, etc, 4 or 5 kinds of juice. And always a couple of Mexican dishes to round out the selection. I could go on and on but I'd never remember it all. The waiters were friendly and personable and had the ability to know what we might want even before we asked. A young man by the name of Alexander was our favorite. Most tables were for 4 but he would watch for us coming and would have a table for 6 ready for us before we got to the entrance of the restaurant. They also have a dinner buffet but we never made it because of the other wonderful restaurants.

The Seaside Grill was our favorite restaurant. It's perched low on the side of a cliff and the deck sticks out close to the ocean. This one and the World Cafe had no clothing restrictions except that ladies must wear something over their bathing suits and guys had to wear shirts. We did have some trouble interpreting the restrictions at the others. We had dinner at the Oceana one night and my son wore a pair of nylon board shorts with a button up shirt (tank and T shirts are not allowed for guys but are fine for women). Two nights later he was sent away even though he was wearing the same shorts. Apparently board shorts are not allowed. The Portifino was by far the strictest. Long pants and button shirts only. No shorts at all, pants, skirts or dresses only for girls. We didn't get to the Mexican restaurant but the son who did said it was very good. The tent by the beach had very good burgers and hot dogs if you wanted an afternoon snack.

All restaurants had the same exceptional service and they are more than willing to make adjustments to your meal should you request it. We were a little concerned about watching what we ate and drank because of the dreaded Montezuma's Revenge. Not to worry. We all had drinks with ice and drank the water served with our meals. No one had any problems

ENTERTAINMENT

We had read some people found the evening entertainment kind of cheesy so we didn't expect too much. Maybe that's why we were pleasantly surprised. Every night there was a different theme. The only night I found disappointing was Karaoke night. Although there were a few gems, there were a lot of drunk people making fools of themselves which got kind of boring.
Leonardo was our favorite waiter during the shows. You no sooner came to the bottom of your glass and he was there to see if we wanted another. As I am not a big drinker he got a kick out of bringing me juice or water and asking me if I'd like another tequila to go with it.

I do have to say I was hoping to see strolling Mariachis. I remembered them fondly from my first visit to Mexico but there were none in the hotel at all. Fiesta Night was the closest but it was a stage show.

BEACH

The beach was terrific. It's raked every morning and it's secluded by the cliffs on either side but plenty large enough so you don't have to worry about crowding. The water is not as clear as on the Mayan side but we enjoyed it just as much. The kids took on the rock climbing and had a great time. The only complaint would probably be the shortage of boogie boards. It seemed there were only 4 or 5 on the whole beach. A few more waiters on the beach would have been nice. We only saw one poor fellow on the northern end and he was run off his feet slogging thru the sand.

POOLS

We didn't go in any of the pools. Our youngest son was in the main pool where the bar is. He said it was fine but there are a lot of wasps by the bar. The pool near the older tower had a lot of bugs in it. I woud have liked to have gone into the smaller adult infinity pool but there are a lot of rude people who get up in the morning and take their books and towels and shoes down and put them on the lounges. Then they go off and have breakfast and do their thing and come back to the pool in the afternoon. There are only about 15 chairs and they always have peoples belongings on them all day, even when there were only 5 or 6 people poolside or in the water. There should be a rule against that.

TIPPING

We tipped moderately (2 or 3 bucks) as a rule but were more generous with the staff who went above and beyond ($5). But never once did we feel it was required. In fact one morning we went down and forgot our cash upstairs but we still got the same great service. We made up for it the next time we came downstairs.

This is a resort we would recommend to anyone. We've already decided we'll go back. The weather in early June was not too hot and we had only one evening of rain the night before we left.

We compared notes with several people who stayed in Nuevo Vallarta. Dreams was positively the better choice.
