“Beautiful, stylish but service is poor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2011

There is no question that this hotel is breathtakingly lovely. It is also perfectly located in a quiet street above the hustle and bustle of lovely Puerto Vallarta. The decor is stunning, the rooms lovely BUT, in our experience (and maybe we got them on a bad week or we didn't fit their idea of good customers) the service is poor.

We had dishes left on our balcony for 2 days. We were completely ignored by the owner (despite being one of only 3 sets of guests there at the time) and we were offered a complimentary meal as part of our stay only to discover that meant choosing from a special "cheap" menu rather than the restaurants a la carte (which given the price of the place and the fact we were there for a week seemed slightly pathetic).

Perhaps a one off, but despite it fabulous location and decor, we won;t be going back. A pity because a little more care and attention would make this the perfect place to stay in PV.

Our trip began with Christmas at San Angel and ended with another short stay here before flying out of PV. It capped both ends of our holiday, and I only wish we could have afforded to stay here the entire two weeks we were in Mexico. It is a charming and beautiful estate just far enough away from the busy vibe downtown, friendly (and professional) staff, and an overall extravagant - meets - down-to-earth appeal. And, of course, the restaurant is incredible.

I love luxury hotels and this place really set the bar. every room, every area is fit with plush arrangements, the decor is typically an original priceless handmade scultpure or handpainted work of art, especially from spanish or mexican origin, mostly from prior to the late nineteenth century, primarily religious in theme. absolutely stunning. we had a tour of a few of the rooms and they were stunning.
my wife and i are absolute food critics and not one meal in this locale was anything but superb. we could not stop eating, it was so delcious and obviously made from pure, fesh ingredients. the icing on the cake was the mariachi band performing, along with singing servers, in the upper level with a view of the entire city.

If you stay in Puerto Vallarta and do not spend at least five nights here you are staying in the wrong hotel. we will return every time we visit the city.

each of the three pools is filled by an array of fantastic sculptured fountains. the locale is perfect for a jaunt to any place in old puerto vallarta.

Hacienda San Angel has an authenticity and character that is uncommon and rare. After tirelessly searching for a wedding venue that was "authentically Mexican" for our wedding, my bride and I stumbled across the Hacienda on the internet. Intrigued by its photographs, a negative TripAdvisor wedding review almost prevented me from considering the property -- which would have been a tremendous mistake. Fortunately, I sought clarification and decided to visit the property myself. Immediately upon walking into the doors, my bride and I were mesmerized by the character of the property. Janice was a tremendous pleasure to work with throughout the entire process and our wedding will live in our memory and the memories of our guests forever. They are already calling it "legendary."

Words and pictures do little to adequately describe what Janice, the owner, has put together. To call it a hotel does it little justice to the masterpiece that is this hotel. Janice has created a world of generations past that she merely shares with her guests. Staying at the Hacienda is more akin to staying at historic private estate fit for Carlos Slim than a hotel. Three villas combined into one property, Janice retained all of the common spaces proper to a home. Subsequently, there is plenty of room to relax and stretch out in comfort and luxury that eclipses even the finest hotels. Three pools, countless alcoves, and plenty of space to relax.

There is not a square inch of the property that is not significant. For starters, Janice began decorating the property with pieces from a private museum she purchased. Her attention to detail and standard of perfection permeates every aspect of your experience. Bedding is some of the finest I have ever slept on -- either fine cotton or REAL LINEN. All with delicate lace rarely found in even the finest residences. Every napkin is real linen, monogrammed, with hand-sewn lace. Even the bath robes are linen. Service is spectacular.

After traveling around PV with a wedding planner and visiting several of the large properties, my bride and I were left rather discouraged. The thought of a beach wedding with sunbathers just beyond view was unpalatable for us. We wanted something Mexican, by the water, yet still formal. What the Hacienda delivered was well beyond our expectations. We wed in a beautiful chapel with panoramic views of PV's several-hundred-year-old chapel (we could have hit it with a rock) and the bay. Our guests dined to the sound of the best Mariachi band we've ever heard on candle-lit tables. Service, the quality of the stemware, flatware, and tableware was better than that what I have experienced at any Ritz Carlton property.

If you find yourself in Puerto Vallarta, you owe yourself at least dinner at the restaurant. If you are considering a wedding, then it would be unthinkable to not visit the beautiful wedding chapel. I am posting pictures from our wedding. If anyone considering a wedding would like a reference, please ask the hotel for our contact information.

My husband and I stayed at Hacienda San Angel for one night in February 2010. Here are our overall impressions:

LOCATION: Hacienda San Angel is conveniently located in downtown Puerto Vallarta; just a few blocks from the Malecon; (it’s all uphill on the trip back!) It is only 30 min. from the airport which costs about $20 USD by taxi.

SERVICE: All of the staff that we met were very friendly and helpful. From the moment that we arrived, we were given a quick tour and shown to our room where complementary beverages and guacamole with taco chips was waiting on our private patio. This was a really nice touch after traveling. Fresh ice water is available in the room too; very convenient in a hot climate where the water isn’t safe to drink. The turndown service even left a pretty silver box of decadent chocolates on our pillow. The complimentary continental breakfast is available wherever you’d like to have it; in your room, at the restaurant, or poolside. There is no additional charge for room service! It consists of a fresh fruit plate, sweet pastries, coffee or tea, and orange juice. We ordered hot entrees to go with it which were very tasty and reasonably priced. Long distance phone calls to the U.S. and Canada are complimentary too!

HOTEL AMENITIES: The hotel exterior is very plain and doesn’t stand out at all from the surrounding buildings. However, upon entering, the ‘wow factor’ is quickly revealed. The interior is vast, luxurious and ornate...a photographer’s dream! The courtyard is lush with a beautiful fountain, statues, and a beautifully manicured garden. Candles are lit throughout at night which adds to the nostalgia. There are 3 pools; two on upper sun decks and another on the main level. Two out of three are heated; (the heater was broken on one) and all provide beautiful views and are adorned with fountains and ample lounge chairs. We were the only ones using the pool when we were there! The owner’s 7 small dogs roam freely around the courtyard...if you are an animal lover this is a real bonus! However, they do bark whenever anyone is entering the front door which could get annoying after a while. Be sure to check out their chapel across the street...it is beautiful with fabulous views of the city!

ROOMS: We were able to peak in many of the suites since there didn’t seem to be many guests staying there...they are all beautiful, distinctive and furnished with interesting antique furniture and luxurious linens. We stayed in a junior suite called the Angel’s Dome suite. It is a small but pretty room on the upper level with lovely domed ceilings in the bedroom and bathroom. We chose it because of the small private balcony with great views of the city. Our only critique of this room is the open shower; (there is no stall so it makes a mess all over the bathroom floor), an interior window beside the bed which we covered with a towel for privacy and light reduction, and a bit of noise from the restaurant where a band was playing. If we were to stay again, We’d probably choose the Crown View Junior suite which is next door; (these are the only two rooms on this level)...it is a larger room with a large terrace overlooking the courtyard and has skylights in the bathroom with a pretty tiled bathtub/ shower combination.

We were concerned about staying here because of some negative reviews about service received from the owner. We didn’t meet her during our stay and couldn’t have been happier with our room, the hotel, and the service. Be aware that they charge an additional 10% surcharge if you pay by credit card which I believe is illegal...you can pay with cash or traveler’s cheque to avoid this. Don’t be afraid to ask for a discounted rate...the rates on their website are very expensive and occupancy seemed to be low during our visit. We were given a rate of $280 USD per night for a junior suite because of their association with another small hotel that we stayed at.

Hacienda San Angel is the pinnacle of luxury for those traveling in Puerto Vallarta. The property is immaculately maintained, with every square inch dotted with authentic antiques from around Mexico and the world. It has the look and feel of a colonial styled Hacienda that sets you back to a world since past.

The service provided here was also top-notch. The staff catered my meals and every needs, including arranging all activities during my stay there. They removed a lot of the hassle associated with vacationing in a foreign country, and I think that these services greatly improved my experience in P.V.

It is my understanding that the property has since been expanded to include additional rooms, all of which are unique from another, and also to build in a chapel for weddings, which I am sure would be gorgeous.

The location is excellent, perched slightly above the cathedral in the center of town, you'll have easy access to most activities, restaurants, shops, and also the Malecon. It should be advised that getting around by foot will require anyone staying here to conquer large hills or fleets of stone steps, so be wary if you are elderly or of poor health. For me, the location could hardly have been any better and the views were also amazing. Highly recommended.
