“Back again from a Wonderful Stay at the Canto!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2008

Well, it's me again the happy Traveler...
I would like to say again,I had the best time at Villas Vallarta and Canto Del Sol.
The service remains impeccable, and the staff members are excellent.I just spent two weeks there by myself and it was amazing. The room was great, always clean, fresh bottled water every morning.
Don't listen to the bad reviews of this Hotel..it is a crock.
Your stay is what you make it and the staff if given any type of respect from you will go beyond the call of duty to make your stay as
enjoyable as possible.
The food again is pretty good, the drinks..well Tequila Poppers
all the way!! The pool staff are a wonderful addition to this Hotel.
Saul,Alex,Charlie are the activities coordinators and they will keep you busy all day long.
The Pool Waiters, Jorge and Jose Luis are the best that I've ever run across, believe me, I was in that industry for 20 years!
A little respect and a tip every now and then will give you the best service that you have ever had.
Be kind to the snack bar staff, they are wonderful too..and rarely get any form of recognition for their sweat and hard work...

Anyway that's all for now...See you in January when I get back from yet another trip to Canto Del Sol and Villas Vallarta.

HASTA LUEGO !!!!!!!!!!

Canto del Sol is a great place to spend a week.
The units are clean, neat, and recently had a make over,
The room that my sister stayed in had air conditioner problems with the speed control. Our room was well equipped.

The safe combination was a problem, and did not use it.

The food is very nice, however, can become mundaine.
The staff went out of ther way to make our stay enjoyable.

The Happy Lobster restaurant was recommended, however, avoid this trap, the lobster was mushy, and a complete waste of time getting there, and money spent on the dinner...

The alcoholic drinks were good, and the soda's were also available. Waiters would bring them to you around the pool. and also in the dining room.
The Canto was more than we could expect for an all inclusive.

We just got back from one week at Canto Del Sol. The people that complain are crazy! We had a few problems at the beginning with our air conditioning, but if you politely explain the problem, the hotel is more than willing to assist you. Maybe we could do this becasue it was off-season, but we found them to be accommodating. We also asked about the all inclusive rate which we did get at a discounted price for 3 days of our stay. This is well worth the price for all the food you can eat and all you can drink. Jorge at the pool bar is absolutely fantastic,

  • Liked — Great pool and those that want the beach, it's right there!
  • Disliked — The air conditioning was weak

On arriving to the hotel at night, we checked in and were given the wrong room, we had to lug all our luggage back to the front desk, and let them know,( there are no door men at night, so no help with luggage) they gave us a new room which also turned out to be wrong,( we paid for two double beds) so AGAIN we lugged all our luggage and tired children back to the front, and were finally given the right room,.

The rooms are ok, nothing fancy but over all, very clean and comfortable. We blasted the air conditioning as soon as we got there, we were very hot, and noticed that there was a lot of dust coming out of the air conditioning ducts, and i being an asthmatic, had a full blown asthma attack by morning, ( which is usually only brought on by very dusty conditions or being sick ) The food is alright, buffet style but they served the exact same thing each day, which gets pretty boring, the pool is small, no larger than an average size back yard pool, and the lounging chairs that are placed poolside, are cheap and some of them broken, so you had to lie on them flat, you couldn't adjust them to sit up.

There is a snack bar , that serves fantastic burgers, tacos and nachos ( which honestly is better food than the buffet style food ) the only annoying thing was that the lady working the snack bar would rudely say " oh, you want even more? " whenever we would go for seconds or thirds , mind you we paid an all inclusive rate, and could eat or drink all we want, i found her to be quite offensive.

Take it from me, do not stay here. I will visit Puerto Vallartam, Mexico again, it is a BEAUTIFUL city, but NOT at this hotel!

  • Liked — The hotel itself is quite large and pretty
  • Disliked — Some rude staff

We finally decided on Canto Del Sol after checking lots of different resorts out. I read all the reviews and there was good and bad but I figured the price was so good lets do it.
We liked our room, we had a very nice view and it was convenient to all the restaurants and pool area, we were on the second floor.
The pool was not good, very small and it never looked clean it was always murky and lots of crap floating around.
The loungers were very comfortable and plenty but the lack of umbrellas made it impossible to stay outside for any long period of time, lucked in a few mornings with umbrellas after a 7:30 wake up call to put a towel on them.
I read the food was not good and I must agree it was not good, we laughed as everyday was the same food just a different name "pork with red sauce" pork with green sauce etc
Did enjoy some of the desserts.
Can't say the staff were our favourite from all the places we have visited, after the first week we finally made friends with a few of the morning waiters who treated us great. Jose was a doll.
The hall ways were not kept clean and the stairs always looked dirty with hair etc.
The beach is terrible, very rocky which I knew about. There was only 2 palapas on the beach and no umbrellas available.
Bar service was very good around the pool once the waiters got to know you.
The location of the hotel is really great, close to everything.
I can't say I would ever stay at this resort again but we enjoyed our holiday in Puerto Vallarta.
On our birthdays the hotel sent a small cake to the room and we thought that was very nice so thank you for that.

We spent a week at the Villas Mar 1-9, 2008. Our first trip to PV, and we couldn't have been happier or enjoyed our time more. The staff were very friendly and helpful, our room was always clean, with bottles of water, and we looked forward to returning to our room each day to see what wonderful shapes our towels would be in! I loved the true mexican feel of the room (I didn't feel like I was staying at the Holiday Inn in Winnipeg) - it was a true mexican experience. Had a wonderful balcony looking out to one of the main streets. The resort was perfect for us. It was quiet and relaxing around the pool, the bartenders were super nice and helpful (even helping me make up my mind to go to the bull fights - glad I did, awesome experience!)

The location was great, only 50 or 60 pesos to take a taxi anywhere (downtown, walmart, marina). We enjoyed taking the bus (5.5 pesos) downtown each night to explore the Malecon and watch the sunset. There were a lot of little shops, restaurants and convenience stores surrounding the resort, with a larger supermarket a short 10 minute walk away.

It was nice to have the amenities of Canto Del Sol (which is not really across the street, the resorts are practically together, down one flight of stairs and up another). The food was good every day (especially breakfast - fresh fruit, juice, coffee) and we looked forward to our quiet dinner poolside at the villas each night. The beach was great, and we walked it almost everyday. We actually had the opportunity to stay at Canto Del Sol for one night (gotta love flight delays!) and was poolside - room was beautiful, kitchenette, newer than villas but was quite noisy/no balcony, so would definitely stay at the villas.

The one negative - the towels "reserving" spots by the pool and beach every morning - people ignored the signs requesting not to do this, and the staff did not appear to deal with it. Often people would lay their towels out at 7am and not return until after lunch to actually use the chairs.

Would go back again in a heartbeat - if you are looking for an intimate, quiet place to enjoy your vacation, stay at the villas. Remember to tip your bartenders, servers, and housekeepers - it's worth the couple of bucks! If your looking for a bit more action, still stay here - you get the action from Canto, but will sleep better!

The Villas Vallarta has the potential to be a great hotel, with large suites instead of the standard 1-2 bed hotel, these units are about the size of a one-bedroom apartment with very large balconies. The hotel and suites are in decent shape with a few bad short-comings. The hotel is poorly built and you need to leave your air condition on to drown out the outside noise. The main downside to this hotel is it caters to Mexicans more than tourists. One or two locals will rent a room and then invite 4-8 visitors to come stay with them, they can buy visitor passes cheap at this hotel as it offers no real services (only breakfast buffet and pool side bar, for everything else you must go to Canto Del Sol across the street), they seem to buy the visitor pass for one day but due to lax security stay until kicked out. Last Saturday it was quite amusing to see about 50 supposed guest having a wild party in the hotel and in the end about 10 police with machine guns showed up to break up the party.

We were lucky there were no parties next to our room, but we heard many people complaining and they could not have their rooms moved as there were no vacancies. If you stay at the Villas do not choose anything near the pool unless you enjoy constant noise.

If you buy all inclusive package here you have to walk across the street to the parent hotel for lunch and dinner buffet. This hotel does have a bad breakfast buffet, you can get better food by going to the Italien restaurant, or again crossing the street to the bigger buffet, or have fresh made to order breakfast at the poolside at Canto del Sol.

The buffet was average overall, stay away from Sunday Chinese food buffet that would be a good day to eat out! You are allowed to try two of the hotel restaurants; the steak house was great,

Due to the hotel's great location getting around is quite easy, a cheap taxi ride for $4-5 will pretty well get you up north to Marina or wall mart, or to downtown. Another more inexpensive way to go Is to take the local bus, there is a bus that runs down the main strip from Wal-Mart to south end, it runs about every 5minutes and costs 5.5 peso (the beater bus will say Wal-Mart/hotels on it). You can also go further north by catching the nicer ATM company bus for 10 peso. The buses have designated stops every 3 blocks, but will pick you up by waving at it anywhere, and will drop you off anywhere too just tell the bus driver or wait for it to stop at a light or traffic and get off.

A quick note about this hotel (and most of Puerto Vallarta) the beaches are not great, the undertow is so strong you can hear the sea dragging rocks out. If you go further north or south the beaches can be better, but undertow still a problem.

If you want to visit a quaint real Mexican town with cheap prices and awesome beach visit Bucerias about 30-40mins north by bus (costs 10peso, look for nice white bus that says Bucerias on it, or take ATM bus also on main drag, but actual stop is in front of Wal-Mart for the white express bus).

One last note about PV in general, the locals were not very friendly, I think they resent tourists taking over their town. Everyone that talks to you wants to sell you something, get you into their store, sell real or imagined tours and get you to go to time share meetings; however, these people speak good English and often try to pass themselves off as hotel reps or official tourist info people (yes even at the airport when you first walk out be careful, and even at your own hotel). They are a great source of info, so just say this is your last day, you’re a student, not married etc and they won’t bother to pitch tours or timeshare meeting to you, but they can tell you all about PV, how to get around, where the nice beaches and smaller towns are and what buses to take.

In conclusion, I would not return to the Villas Vallarta for only one reason, all the locals partying it up there. If we would have been one room down we would have been surrounded by parties on both sides and wouldn’t have slept a wink much like many of the other tourists. For average food, average drink quality, excellent location, nice wanna-bee resort the is a good option if your willing to risk having to listen to Mexican parties all day and night long (the parent hotel across the street might be a better option). The Villas Vallarta is one of the few places with suites so it is useful if you need more room or want to share a room with a few friends to cut down costs ( 1-2 bedroom units with sofa bed available). The Villas Vallarta suffers from typical Mexican business philosophy, let’s make money now and worry about tomorrow later, so its poorly built and they are much too liberal with handing out visitor passes for the quick easy buck by making money on the locals while quite possibly ruining your entire vacation (and like me you won’t go back to this hotel even though we had no problems it was by sheer luck of or room locations we didn’t hear the 24hrs Mexican siesta parties).
